Brian the writer

And at age ten was when he and others realized he could write.

He was given an assignment to write a short story about animals. He wrote about a bird that cleaned the teeth of a crocodile.

It was so well written and creative that his teacher thought he copied it and and because he never said he copied it the teacher canned him as a liar.

Other Professions

Before he became an author he tried several different professions.

He was a sailor, a longshoreman, a railway fireman, long-distance truck driver, a bus driver, a boxer, a bobby, a post master, and a stand-up comic.

His writing career really began as a playwright. He wrote three plays that were performed at the Everyman Theatre.

REdwall

Then when he was a truck driver, delivered milk to Royal Wavertree School for the Blind, he started writing books for the kids. The Redwall series.

Because of the audience he wrote the books in a very descriptive manner so the words would paint pictures in the minds of the children.

A friend of his read the book Redwall and then took it to a publisher without Brian knowing.

That led to a contract of the first five books in the series to be published.
