Duration: c. 12 minutes 30 seconds Instrumentation: Flute, doubling piccolo Oboe Clarinet in B-flat Bass clarinet, doubling clarinet in E-flat Bassoon Horn in F Trumpet in C Trombone Percussion: Sandpaper blocks 2 metal pipes (low, high) 5 toms 1 cymbal (medium high) 2 wood blocks (very low, high) Vibraphone, with bass bow Ratchet (medium or high) Harp, with scordatura Grand piano Electronics: Laptop running SuperCollider (program provided by the composer) Two-channel stereo speakers, blended as much as possible with the ensemble Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Cello Double bass Setup: The percussion setup is in two stations. First, the vibraphone, ratchet, and wood blocks positioned on the side of the stage opposite that of the piano. Second, the remaining instruments positioned on the other side of the stage. The percussionist begins at this second station, and at two points in the piece walks conspicuously from one station to the other. The harpist tunes the lowest C string to C-quarter-flat. The laptop performer should appear onstage with the ensemble if possible.

General Notation

Interpretation of Notation

&

Quarter-tones (quarter-sharp and quarter-flat). These are equal-

tempered (i.e., exactly 50 cents sharp or flat) and, for the winds,

should be produced by specific fingerings wherever possible.

Eighth-tones (rare) are indicated

by accidentals with small arrows

pointing up or down.

Tremolos are always unmeasured, and for the winds, always mean

flutter-tongue. If flutter-tonguing is not possible, use a timbral trill,

or sustain the note normally (no growling).

Flute: tongue pizz.

Air through instrument. For the brass, syllables are also indicated

above the notes. "RR" is a rolled R, and "FRR" is a rolled R with

the lips close together, combining an "F" with the roll.
