Term 1, Issue 4- 2019
National Day of Action Against Bullying
Brewarrina Central School News
It is now the penultimate week of Term 1 and
there are still so many events and activities to
occur before we all head off on our holidays. It is
absolutely essential that students attend until the
final day of term as we do not want any essential
learning time lost.
Miss Simone Austin joined the Brewarrina
Central School staff in Week 8. She is the
Kindergarten teacher and is enjoying working
with all the Kindergarten children. Miss Ellen
Green is the RFF teacher and works across the K-6
classes.
The Year 12 students have completed their Half
Yearly Examinations. Their Half Yearly Reports
will be distributed before the end of term. The
students approached these exams maturely. They
need to take note of their teachers’ comments
and continue to remain focused on their school
work and study program. If they require
assistance with work they can access the Senior
Study Club that is held on Mondays after school
in the Secondary Hub.
In Week 8 the Brewarrina AECG Re Establishment
Meeting was held. The following Office Bearers
were elected: David Kirby, Chair; Peter Gordon,
Vice Chair; Danielle Boney, Secretary; Kelsie
Lovett, Treasurer; Tiffany Winters, Sue Gordon,
Trish Frail, Morris Sullivan- Delegates to the
Regional AECG. Congratulations to all Office
Bearers. Brewarrina Central School and all other
educational providers in the Brewarrina area look
forward to working with you in 2019.
The Bangarra Dance Workshop was an excellent
opportunity for students to be involved in
workshops taught by such talented dancers. We
had 9 students involved: Tara lea Kirby, Janalee
Conroy, Monty McHughes, Rehannah Russell,
Shannon McHughes, Dylan Rosser, Clayton
Walsh, Maddison Gordon and Brooke Ford. We
were the only school who had boys participating
and all those involved were impressed by our
students’ energy, commitment and leadership.
The dance teachers and visiting teachers were
also very impressed by the wonderful morning
tea and lunch that Aunty Tahnee provided. Well
done to all those involved. It was a privilege to
host such an engaging event at our school. The
students from Bourke HS, Cobar HS, Collarenebri
CS, Nyngan HS and Lightning Ridge CS all seemed
to enjoy the day at Brewarrina Central School.
It was also very pleasurable to see the Touch
Football Carnival that Brewarrina Clontarf hosted.
The visiting Academies and our students
displayed great sportsmanship and camaraderie.
It was a very special experience that was enjoyed
by all. Thank you to Julie and Bob Kirby at the
Brewarrina Pool who hosted the boys and staff
for a BBQ after the football. Well done to Chris
Bell and Uncle Charlie for their great
organisation.
In Week 11 on Wednesday April 10th at 10:15am
the Term 1 Whole School Assembly which
incorporates the ANZAC Assembly will be held. I
hope to see as many family and community
members there to join us in celebrating our
students’ achievements and honouring our
ANZAC tradition.
Some of you may have noticed that the verandas
on the K-6 buildings have had screens installed.
These will provide the children with cooler
classrooms and provide an outdoor learning area.
They are aesthetically pleasing as well.
Over the past few weeks Brewarrina Central
School has been involved in the planning
associated with the Remote School Attendance
Strategy (RSAS) a Federal Government initiative.
This program focuses on supporting student
attendance at school by working with families
and community. There are 4 positions associated
with this program and they are being advertised
through REDI.E. Information regarding the
recruitment process is available from the REDI.E
office in Brewarrina or on their website:
www.redie.org.au.This should be a very beneficial
program for the Brewarrina community and
school.
This week Peter Gordon, Margaret Nicholls and I
are travelling to Sydney for the Connected
Communities Symposium. We will be learning
about the amendments to the Connected
Communities Strategy.
There are many more events that will occur
before the end of term …such as the Easter Hat
Parade, PBL Reward Activities for both K-6 and
Secondary, Football Gala Days as well as the
usual wonderful learning activities…so much to
do in so little time.
The Brewarrina ANZAC Day March and Ceremony
will be held on Thursday 25th April. I will be
attending. It would be wonderful to have as many
students as possible participate in the ANZAC
March and Ceremony.
As this is the final newsletter for the term I would
like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. I
would like to thank the students and staff for
their awesome efforts in Term 1 and I look
forward to seeing all of our students back on
Tuesday 30th April ready for learning. The staff
will return on 29th April for a Staff Development
Day.
Be safe and happy and try not to eat too many
Easter eggs. If you are travelling take care on the
roads. If you are staying in Brewarrina over the
holidays please take note of the Youth Centre
Holiday Activities. There is a lot to keep everyone
occupied. Until Term 2, take care…
Christine Grieves.
Not long until school holidays now! I know the
kids are looking forward to having a break and
the Easter Bunny visiting. Next week we are
having an Easter Hat Parade on Thursday at
12.30pm. We would love to see all the families
there while the children are parading around in
their hats. Ms Nicholls will be back from her
break and overseeing the colouring competition
and parade. We can’t wait until she is back!!
This week we have football in Goodooga for
children in Years 3 to 6. There is also Western
Plains Rugby Union trials in Dubbo next Monday
and we have five boys who will be trying out.
Good luck to all our footy players.
We have many students who have been
displaying the school values and been SAFE
RESPECTFUL LEARNERS. Our PBL recognition
afternoon will be after the Easter Hat Parade next
Thursday. Parents and carers are welcome to
attend.
Thank you to families who have let us know
change of address details and phone numbers.
This has been really helpful when trying to sort
out excursions and when children are not well.
We look forward to seeing everyone next week at
our Whole School Assembly and Easter Hat
Parade!
Take care, Beck Williams

All Secondary students had the opportunity to
participate in Bangara dance workshops held at
our school on Tuesday 19 March (Week 8). Other
schools from the area were also visiting to
participate.
In Week 6, students participated in the
Moorambilla workshops. This was another
chance for students to explore the arts and
develop their skills.
Year 12 Half Yearly examinations were
completed in Week 8 and now staff have
completed Half Yearly Reports. The Senior Study
Club will run every Monday afternoon for the rest
of term for Year 11 and 12 students. A very good
opportunity to get support with assessments and
catching up on in-class tasks. Thankyou to our
secondary staff and Clontarf for giving up their
time and supporting our kids.
Our Year 11 trainees are now beginning the TAFE
requirements for their chosen field. It can be a bit
overwhelming to keep on top of everything but
they are giving their best. The school is very
supportive of all of our students and help in any
way we canto ensure their success. If parents
have concerns regarding the workload please
come and see us.
A reminder to parents and students regarding
mobile phones. We have had some issues lately
with students using phones in class including to
film/take pictures. This is not acceptable at all,
and in fact a breach of the law. We encourage all
students to leave their phones packed away
during class time, and ask that parents support us
with this by not contacting their child during class
times. It would be even better if students left
their phones at home, but we understand ins
some cases this is not possible. You can contact
your child any time at school by ringing the
school directly. Mobile phones can be a massive
disruption to learning and creates unnecessary
conflict.

Well done to these students for displaying our
school values and having a go at school.
Our PBL Reward Day will be held on Wednesday
of Week 11 (10 April). We have many students
that are consistently displaying positive
behaviour and the Reward Day is always lots of
fun and happiness for those students.
It has been fantastic to move through the
secondary classes and see some quality teaching
and learning. I love seeing the positive
relationships between the staff and students and
the wide range of engaging activities. It has been
a very busy and demanding term but by working
together we all succeed. Parents are always
welcome to see us about their child’s education
and work with us to achieve the best outcomes
for our awesome kids. We wish all our families a
safe and restful break.

articles and design, essay writing about teenagers
in the media, reading books and studying poetry.
See some of our students in action and a senior
student short story below.
You can’t escape
The room was empty. Nothing. Just four
empty walls. He felt a cold shiver colder than
ice.
The window shattered. He turned around to
see what it was.
The window started to have a slight glint as
he got closer. He was thinking “why did the
window break?” Then his eyes started to get
bigger.
He started to think “why did it glint? Could it
of been the sun setting? Or is it something
surreal?”
His face turned white like he had just seen a
ghost. He gently started to walk back quietly
and sat down in the same spot where the
window had shattered. He looked around the
room slowly as his head turned more he
started to shake.
When he finished looking around he decided
he needed to get up to have a look around
the apartment. The more he started to walk –
the more it got darker.
As he walked around all he was thinking was
“please, please don’t let there be anything in
here”. He felt like something was following
him. Suddenly he had the urge to turn around
and look behind him; he saw a shadow of a
tall man dressed in black.
He started to think “is that a real person, or is
it a ghost?” As he followed the shadow his
face got whiter as he walked, his face looked
increasingly worried.
The shadow of the tall man stopped at the
end of the hallway. They looked at each other
with worry on their faces.
He decided to walk closer. The more he
walked towards the tall man, the more the
tall man’s face turned angry. He stopped. He
had a weird feeling.
Slowly, it dawned on him- he was looking at
himself! “You need to face your fears!” the
tall man screamed.
It was then he realised he need to stop
running and face his fears. “I think it’s time I
go home” he said to the tall man. The tall
man nodded at him and disappeared.

Year 7 hard at work
Year 6 has had a great term 1. We have been involved
in a lot of fantastic learning experiences such as
cooking, fun science experiments and even wood
work!
The students have also had a great time going
swimming for sport every Friday.
The class has settled in really well and are looking
forward to many more exciting learning experiences
this year.
End of unit wrap up with year 7 recalling elements
of their two units of study over term1
Year 8 – some of them hard at work!
