Term 2, Issue 2- 2018
Brewarrina Central School News
Last week our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 were
involved in NAPLAN. Each time I visited the
NAPLAN rooms the students were conscientiously
engaged and intent on doing their best. Well
done to all students and the staff who ensured
NAPLAN ran so effectively.
Another highlight of the week was the school’s
Annual Cross Country Carnival. Miss Dove and
Miss Morgan had organised a wonderful event
which all the students from 8 years of age and
above participated. The weather was superb and
all the students involved approached the run with
good spirits and energy. Well done to all the
students and staff involved. Everyone had a great
day.
Meanwhile back at school the Kindergarten to
Year 2 students were also involved in their own
Cross Country on the oval. Their enthusiastic
efforts were matched by the staff’s energy and
participation. What a great place Brewarrina
Central School is!!
Last week Brewarrina Girlfit18 started. Girls from
Year 5 to 12 are invited to attend on Thursday
afternoons from 3pm to 4:30pm at the school. If
they didn’t receive a note they are available from
Ms. Grieves. Students will be driven home after
each session if parents have given permission.
The program for the term has been organised. If
you have any queries please contact the school.
This week and next week students in Year 10 and
11 will be involved in a TAFE Taster. They will go
to TAFE each day and be involved in a variety of
courses. They will also be able to do their White
Card. Mrs Hertslet has supported the students to
complete the necessary paperwork. This is an
excellent opportunity for the students to get a
‘taste’ of what is involved in vocational training.
Three Year 12 students will travel to Dubbo to
continue their involvement in the IPROWD
program.
It is wonderful to see how many boys regularly
attend Clontarf training on their designated days.
Chris and Uncle Charlie are to be congratulated
for ensuring the boys display the Clontarf spirit in
all their training sessions and this permeates in
their application at school. Chris and Charlie are
always available to talk about any aspect of
Clontarf. Please contact them at school.
The Annual School Report and The School Plan
2018- 2020 are available on the school’s website:
www.brewarrina-c.schools.nsw.edu.au and
printed copies are available at the Office. If you
have any queries regarding any aspect of these
please contact me at school.
I look forward to another happy and productive
fortnight at Brewarrina Central.
Christine Grieves
We hope everyone enjoyed the Mother’s Day
morning tea and assembly. It was awesome to
see so many family members attend. Aunty Jen
and Aunty Kylie did a fantastic job organising the
Mother’s Day stall in the library. All the children
were super excited with the many items to
choose from and I’m sure the mums, nans and
aunties would’ve loved what they got, I certainly
did. Thank you to Aunty Jen, Aunty Kylie, Aunty
Sherrie, Aunty Kim and Ms Kellett for making
both the stall and morning tea run so smoothly
and thank you to Colin Gibson, Rhae-Kye Waites
and Ms Moylan-Mcguirk for hosting the
wonderful assembly.
In Week 3 we had NAPLAN for Years 3 and 5; all
the students put in a great effort and should be
proud of themselves. On the Friday we had cross
country and it was lovely to see families cheer the
kids on. We have over thirty children who will be
representing Brewarrina Central at District Cross
Country next week.
Yesterday all of the K-12 children participated in a
hearing workshop which focused on the
importance of ear health and blowing your nose.
The K-2 children then went to the local library to
participate in the nationwide Simultaneous
Reading. They enjoyed listening to the book
Hickory Dickory Dash read by Miss Murphy.
Teachers are currently writing school reports,
ready for Parent-Teacher afternoon on 27th June.
Please put the date into your calendar. We look
forward to seeing you all then and speaking with
you about your child’s learning.
The cold weather has hit us in the mornings and it
has been great to see children wearing jumpers.
There are a few that have lost their owner and
we are asking that all jumpers and jackets are
labelled so we can help them find their way
home.
We hope you have a great fortnight and please
feel free to call in and have a chat.
Take care, Beck Williams
The Secondary Department continues to be very
busy. Over the next two weeks, we have 18
students participating in the YES program- a
fabulous chance for students to experience a
range of TAFE courses. Thankyou to Mrs Hertslet
for chasing up the mountains of paperwork to
ensure our students could have this opportunity.
We will be sure to post plenty of photos for
Facebook and the next newsletter.
Year 11 Half Yearly Examinations are coming up-
Stage 6 can be a very stressful time for students,
as the requirements as they work towards their
HSC means they must work hard for good results.
All students are provided with an Assessment
Schedule and all Assessment Tasks must be
completed. Please ensure you talk with your child
about how they are going with their assessments.
Students should try to find a space every night to
study, get plenty of sleep and simply ask for help
if they need it.
A reminder of the school and the DEC policy on
mobile phones- they are not permitted during
class time. Please support the school with this
policy, it is for the best opportunity for your child
to learn without distractions.
Our Year 7 and Year 9 students sat NAPLAN this
week- the process went smoothly and all
students gave their best.
The following students also received Safe
Respectful Learners merit awards at our
Secondary Assembly this week:
Savannah Gordon- always having a positive
attitude towards her learning
Kobi Bennett- being safe and responsible in the
Ag plot
Belmont Kellett-McHughes- always having a go
Clayton Walsh- fantastic work in HSIE
We welcome any feedback from parents and
want to work with families to ensure the best
outcomes for our students. If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact the school.

At our school we are
Safe
Respectful
Learners
To keep our school looking beautiful, we need to
show respect for it. We ask all students to please
put their rubbish in the bin.
Ways to reduce rubbish being left around is the
Infants/Primary rule of sitting to eat before
playing.
We have lots of bins around the school for
students to put their rubbish in. Staff will be
continuing to push the expectation that students
put their rubbish in the bins after they eat and
keep our school clean and tidy. A reminder that
no glass bottles are allowed at school.
We will soon have new plants placed in the
gardens in an effort to beautify our school and
keep it as a welcoming learning environment. We
would expect that all students care for their
school and recognise that that we must all make
the effort together.
PBL is based on data collected by staff to track
problem behaviours and to ensure strategies are
put in place to prevent or reduce the negative
incidences that may be occurring. For example, if
it is recorded that students are constantly asked
to place their rubbish in the bin, then strategies
such as giving reward tickets to students who are
spotted by staff placing their rubbish in the bin or
if someone is spotted littering, explicit instruction
on how and why to place rubbish in the bin is
given by a staff member.
Enjoy our PBL findaword and keep our school
clean!
Year 7 have been learning about Widja Chains
and Widja Webs as well as ecosystem dynamics
this term. As part of this topic we have been
learning the Wayilwan words for various
organisms in the Brewarrina ecosystem. This was
a difficult task but we stuck to it and everyone in
the room, including Mr Daymond, learnt a lot of
new words for flora and fauna we see every day.
The results speak for themselves.
Well done on a fantastic project to Monty, Ty,
Janayah, Sienna, Fred, Savannah, Keelan, Tara,
Chloe, Ashlei and Dylan.
2/3D have had a very busy start to term 2. Our
Year 3 students have completed their NAPLAN
testing, and did a fantastic job. Everyone tried
their very hardest and made us all proud!
Our class has been creating some wonderful
writing pieces, and this week we are looking at
procedures. We created paper planes and then
had a mini comp to see whose plane could fly the
furthest. It was a lot of fun.
In maths we are working hard on our double digit
addition and subtraction and will be practicing
how to count money.
The positive behaviours and attitudes to learning
in our class are continuing this term. It is so great
to see the students are engaged and excited to
learn new things.
Feel free to visit!
Miss Dove, Aunty Tahnee and Uncle B.J.
This term in the Support Class, all students are
working well and doing some great work. They
have been engaged in our English topic, Stories of
Survival. A text we have been studying in this unit
is Rabbit Proof Fence. This has tied in very well
with our HSIE unit, Colonisation in Australia. We
have been able to study the stories of survival of
the Indigenous Australians. We also looked at the
traditional way of life for the Indigenous
Australians prior to colonisation, and how this
changed so dramatically with the arrival of
Europeans. We used the Murdi Paaki Languages
website to learn some words in language which
the students really enjoyed.
In Maths we are looking at percentages for the
next few weeks, having just finished a unit on
Data. Students enjoyed gathering data and
creating a range of graphs.
In Science, students have been looking at Human
Body with Ms Nolan, learning about the functions
of various systems in our body and how we
develop.
In Visual Arts, students have been creating
various artworks, including painting and mosaics.
A photo of our Learning Maps for Rabbit Proof
Fence- students add to their map as we read the
text, recording the journey of the 3 Aboriginal
girls as they escape the Moore River Settlement
and follow the Rabbit Proof Fence back home to
Jigalong.
