Brett Thompson equals best career NASCAR Truck Series finish Camping World West Series regular finishes respectable 21 st at Auto Club Speedway FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2009) – Starting 31 st in the Saturday’s San Bernardino 200 at the two-mile Auto Club Speedway, Brett Thompson methodically worked his way forward to finish in 21 st place. The finish equals his career best, achieved last year at Phoenix International Raceway, in the No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking, Inc./Windmill Inn & Suites Dodge. In the first five laps, Thompson moved up five positions to 27 th place. Suffering from a tight handling condition at the time; the Jerome, Idaho native maintained that position for the first third of the 100-lap race before going on lap down to the leader on lap 22. Coming in for a caution pit stop on lap 24, Crew Chief Lonnie Rush called for fuel only to gain track position. While it worked, at first, NASCAR officials deemed Thompson committed a “blend violation” returning to the track. He was penalized and had to line up at the end of the longest line. He was 26 th for the restart on lap 30. Moving up to 24 th by lap 43 two laps down to the leaders, Thompson would maintain consistent lap times while running with the top-15. A caution on lap 45 brought Thompson pit side for fuel, track bar adjustment and fresh tires. During the stop, Thompson took off after the jackman dropped the right side of their Dodge. The call from Rush was a four-tire stop and Thompson stopped in time to roll back into his pit box for left side tires. From there, Thompson kept racing hard and utilized consistent laps to move up for the 21st-place finish. This was his fifth-career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start. The team is deciding when to make their next start while also running full time in the NASCAR Camping World West Series competition. The finish equals his career best, achieved last year at Phoenix International Raceway, in the No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking, Inc./Windmill Inn & Suites Dodge.

“All we could hope for was a caution. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen so we were kind of stuck where we were out there. It’s not bad; especially for a one-truck; one-engine team from Idaho.
“I’m real happy with our progress. Each race is a learning process with our team and I’m glad we came down here to California. The team did a great job preparing the truck and on pit road; I screwed up there on pit road. In the NCWWS, we always take two tires so I’m taking the blame on that one pit stop. But the crew responded in their usual great fashion and that’s why we were able to finish the race how and where we did today.”
Lonnie Rush, crew chief: “Everyone on this team did a great job. Brett was awesome out there behind the wheel, the crew was great on pit road and I am happy with how we did here in California.
