Winners 2007/8

Brentwood Town Ladies FC was formed in 1999

following the merger of Brentwood Ursuline FC

and Brentwood Girls FC. The Ursuline Convent

High School had been running teams in the

town since 1991 and by 1998/9 had entered

three teams into the Essex County Girls League

whilst Brentwood Boys had also launched a

girls’ team in 1997.

By the spring of 1999, Brentwood Ursuline had

decided that the school could no longer support

football's rapid growth and the decision was taken to

form an independent club which also took on board

the girls' team from Brentwood Boys for the best

interests of female football in the area.

The focus has now moved to a successful Ladies side,

who compete in the Eastern Region Women's

Football League (ERWFL) having claimed successive

promotions from the Essex County Women's League

in 2003 and 2004.

Having finished fifth in their first season, 2005/6 saw

Brentwood reach the play-off finals as they pushed

for promotion from Division One East. Town could not

quite reach the top tier, and subsequent seasons

saw the club narrowly miss out again having been

placed fourth in 2007 and then third in consecutive

campaigns within the newly-realigned Division One

South.

There was some success in 2008 as the Ladies won

their first major trophy, scooping the ERWFL Plate

Competition courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Kings

Sports, as well as consecutive runs to the Third

Qualifying Round of the FA Women’s Cup.

After the departure of coach Kevin Anderson at the

end of the 2008/9 campaign, 2009/10 dawned with

a new management team in place, headed by Ian

Bent. Ably assisted by David Worsfold and Lucy

Faraday in his backroom team, Bent tasted success

at the end of his first term in charge as Blues finally

claimed that elusive promotion spot, completing the

campaign as runners-up to Arlesey Town.

2010/11 now sees the Club competing in the ERWFL

Premier Division for the first time in their history.

welcome

Welcome to this afternoon’s match

against Woodbridge. We hope that the

visiting players, coaches and

supporters enjoy their trip to Essex

today.

Once again we are preparing to go into an

important League game of the back off

two weeks’ rest courtesy of the British

weather. This is something we are

becoming very used to and ever since my

arrival at the club we have never managed

to get six-eight games played without a

break for one reason or another, but I have

absolute faith in my players’ ability to

respond well to the break and put in a

good performance this afternoon.

We are now in March and with nine league

games to go we have a very busy couple

of months ahead of us. This is partly down to

our excellent progress in all cup

competitions this year and our last match

against Barking was further testament of the

progress this squad is making. Not only did

we come out on top in a very close down

but we bounced back superbly from

conceding a late goal and that attitude

and bravery was extremely pleasing to see.

If we continue to show that then we can be

confident going into to final few months of

the season.

Away from the pitch the club recently were

officially presented with their new

sponsored kit and I’d personally like to

reiterate the clubs thanks to Co-operative

Funeralcare for their support of the club,

and I hope this is the start of a great

relationship between the two.

Our last meeting with Woodbridge was a

real ding-dong battle with the momentum

shifting both ways and ultimately ending in

last-minute disappointment for us. Today

we’ll be hoping to learn from that and

come away with an important three points

to put us back in the picture at the top of

the league.

Enjoy the match!

match report

Brentwood Town Ladies reached the

Semi-Finals of the Eastern Region

Women’s Football League Cup with a

tense penalty shoot-out victory over

Barking at Mayesbrook Park following

a 1-1 draw.

Blues had been five minutes from

progressing during normal time before a

late equaliser forced extra time, but the

squad stuck together to progress by

converting all four of their spot-kicks. Izzy

Vian saved Carly Copplestone’s penalty

and, when Nicola Moore fired wide from

twelve yards, Town were able to celebrate

a fine victory.

“I’m immensely proud of the players

today,” beamed boss Ian Bent. “They

showed both ability and heart to get

through a difficult cup tie and deserve their

place in the Semi-Finals. I thought we

dominated large parts of today’s game.”

“Our commiserations go to Barking who

played their part in a great match, and

penalties is a harsh way to decide a winner,

but without doubt I thought the better

team on the day went through,” he added.

Nikita Whinnett almost opened the scoring

inside twenty seconds after receiving an

incisive pass from Lucy Faraday, but Town’s

top scorer struck her shot straight at

goalkeeper Naomi Ogunde.

A cagy affair ensued, with Brentwood not

opening the scoring until the 55th minute.

Faraday advanced through the midfield

before playing the ball into Whinnett’s feet

on the edge of the penalty area. The

teenager then flicked the ball into Carla

Rose’s path, and the skipper rounded

Ogunde before slotting into the goal.

When required, Town came up with some

inspired defending as Jess Tuffen, Kelly

Walker, Nikki Allen, Sophie Lovell and Nicole

Manning all threw themselves at shots to

prevent them reaching Vian but, with five

minutes remaining, Barking grabbed an

unlikely equaliser courtesy of a fine move.

Vicky Bruce was the instigator with an

excellent pass in to Sian Birleston, who

smashed a low shot from 25 yards into the

bottom left-hand corner.

Extra time was now required, and Whinnett

come closest to breaking the deadlock

during the additional half-hour, collecting

Jess Tuffen’s left-wing pass and spotting

Ogunde fractionally off of her goalline. She

sent the ball spiralling over the shotstopper,

but agonisingly it rebounded back off of

the crossbar and was subsequently

scrambled to safety.

After two hours of football, penalties would

determine the winners, and whereas

Brentwood enjoyed a 100% record with

Lovell, Rose, Faraday and Leah Cowan all

clinically dispatching from twelve yards,

Vian was equal to Copplestone’s spot-kick -

Barking’s second - before almost repeating

the feat from Birleston. With Town leading

4-3, their passage was confirmed when

Moore smashed wildly wide of the

right-hand upright with the homesters’ final

kick.

LAST MEETING - BRIEF REPORT

Brentwood Town picked up another away point as they stretched their un-

beaten run to twelve matches with a 3-3 draw at Woodbridge Town.

The nature of the result, with Jemma Yarnton grabbing a stoppage-time leveller for the

hosts, left the squad disappointed, but Hethersett Athletic’s stalemate at Cambridge

University meant that Blues still sat just one point off of top spot in their inaugural season in

the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division.

“To concede an equaliser so late in the match was a real kick in the teeth and something

we must learn from, but I was still pleased with some of the things I saw today and have

encouraged everyone to take the positives from the game,” assessed manager Ian Bent.

“In the first half we weren’t at our best, but we improved in the second half and

dominated for large periods. For the majority of the game the points looked safe, but we

failed to finish our opponents off and left the back door open, and credit to Woodbridge

for a great comeback from them.”

Leah Cowan gave Brentwood the lead in the tenth minute, and Danielle Butler added to

that five minutes before the break.

A stirring comeback saw Charley

Roach and Kristie Turner level matters

in the second half, but Town

responded to move 3-2 in front when

Sophie Lovell converted from close

range seven minutes from the end.

However, Yarnton had the final say in

stoppage time as she lobbed Vian

and, despite Carla Rose drawing a

fine save from Faye Lunn, the match

ended all-square.
