Book Club

The Yoga instructor will be offering a Friday class start-

ing on September 6th, at 11 AM. The class will last

approximately an hour.

The class will be on a trial basis to see if the interest is there to become

part of our monthly offerings. This is in addition to the regularly scheduled

class that is on Mondays at 1 PM. Hope to see you there!

The Board would like to remind all residents that when

a holiday falls on a weekday, trash collection is delayed

by one day. Labor Day is Monday, September 2nd.

Outdoor Pool Season

Sadly, the outdoor pool season is coming to a close on

Monday, September 2nd at 7 PM. Luckily, you are still able

to enjoy sitting on the pool deck until Friday, October 18th!

Remember: You cannot go into the pool or spa when there is

no lifeguard on duty. Please use caution while walking

around the pool area as well.

The Avenbury Book Club will meet at the Lodge on

September 5th at 10:30 AM to discuss the book

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson. On May 1st, 1915, the British luxury liner Lusitania left New York bound

for England. On board were hundreds of passengers, including many

women and children. Despite warnings placed in the New York

newspapers by the German government, the Lusitania set sail. Germany

had declared the waters around Great Britain to be a war zone and

promised to sink any vessel entering them. Less than a week later, the

Lusitania would be on the bottom of the ocean, and over 1000 passengers

would be dead. In "Dead Wake", author Erik Larson not only describes the

terrible sinking, but also gives the reader a view of the world 100 years

ago. On October 3rd we will discuss and select the books we will read in 2020.

Our annual lunch at The Legacy Restaurant will follow the meeting.

Breakfast Forum

The September 12th Breakfast Forum, will be an update on Scamming, what we need to

know and how to avoid the pitfalls. Mike Norman, our guest speaker has spoken before a

number of groups and should be interesting. Breakfast is at Perkins Restaurant on Chester

Rd. in Avon at 9:30 AM. Please sign up in the Activity Book and pay $1 prior to the event.

Seating is limited to 48, there will be a wait list available. If you cannot attend, please

cancel your reserved spot so that someone on the “wait list” can attend. If there is a “wait list”, please do

not pay until you are notified that there were cancellations and that you are able to attend. Any ques-

Mexican Night

Don your sombreros (if you have one) and join us for MEXICAN NIGHT on Septem-

ber 14th at 6 PM at the Lodge. We'll have Tacos with all the trimmings, red beans

and rice, refried beans, chips and salsa and desert. Afterwards we will play some

games. The cost is $5. Any Questions call Mary Sterricker at 937-4065.

The Summer series "OVERCOMER" will be followed by "Letters to the New

Christians". Our series has led us with new understanding into the hearts of those who

received these letters and how they still have an impact on our lives today. September

will be an exciting month at Monday Morning Bible Study.

We meet from 10:30 AM until Noon at the Lodge. You are encouraged to join us and bring a friend or

Because of the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Men's Investment Club will meet on

September 10th. Thereafter, the meetings will be on the first Tuesday of every month. The Men's Investment Club has room for one new member since we have one member

sightings, and more. You'll be asked for a password only for a few links like Board Meeting minutes

Ladies of the Lake

Diners Club

Come enjoy an Italian feast when the Diners Club heads to Wood and Wine in Avon,

located at 38790 Chester Road (close to Rt 611). We will be there on

Thursday, September 26th at 6 PM. Sign up at the Lodge in the Activity Book.

Deadline for signups is Monday, September 23rd. There is a limited menu of 4 entrees listed in the

Crochet group continues Friday, September 27th at 1PM in the Lodge Library. Beginning

and experienced crocheters and knitters are always welcome.

Call Louana Dickey at 547-6902 if you have questions. Join the Ladies of the Lake on Tuesday, October 8th for a bus trip to the historic Ashtabula

County Covered Bridges. We will be visiting these beautiful covered bridges at the height

of autumn color, stopping for lunch at a bridge that has been restored as a restaurant. The cost is $28

(lunch not included in cost). The bus leaves at 10 AM and returns about 5 PM. This trip is limited to 24

people so please sign up in the Activity Book and pay now. All participants should check that their Aven-

bury Lakes Tour Waiver is up to date. Questions? Call Cheryl Courtney at 937-0058. Save the date: On Thursday, October 24th a representative from Hospice of the Western Reserve will

provide a presentation that we encourage ALL residents of Avenbury to attend. All women residents of Avenbury Lakes are welcome at all activities.

Landscape News

Summer is winding down fast. It just doesn’t seem possible that autumn is almost

here. It is time to start making plans for next year’s plantings. We need to observe

and decide what has done well and what has not. This will help us to make better

decisions in the spring next year. It is time to harvest the fruits of your labor. Those tomatoes and peppers are ripening and need to be

picked. You can still plant some lettuce and radishes for a late crop. They will survive the cool weather.

We have had an early frost in September, but that is not the rule. Our first killing frost is usually in Oc-

tober. Lake Erie’s warmth protects us for a little bit of time. If the frost does greet us earlier, then be

sure to protect those tender plants with a covering. This should extend their growth and give them time

to mature. If a heavy frost is expected pick those green tomatoes and make a luscious fried green tomato side dish.

Now is the time to divide your perennials. Daylily’s, hostas and coneflowers are just a few. Transplant

into healthy soil that has been enriched with organic matter and they will thrive the next year. Make

sure you plant them at the same level they were growing before. I know I have said this before, but soil

preparation is the most important thing you can do to assure that your plants are healthy and stay

healthy. This will also help to break up our clay packed soil and next spring you will find that your

plants have benefitted. Finally as you empty your pots, clean them with a brush and water that has a capful of bleach added.

This solution will kill bacteria and disease that lurk in a dirty pot. Store for next season.

Most of all enjoy the changing season and look forward to next year.

I would like to take this time to thank all of the residents who took the time to wish me

well on my planned departure from Avenbury Lakes/ Lawrence Community Management,

your gestures were truly touching. Unexpectedly, my plans changed and I made the

decision to continue in my current position as the Lodge Administrator.

CVS Vaccination Clinic

CVS (inside of Avon Target) will be onsite at Avenbury Lakes on Tuesday, October 15th

from 10:30 AM until 1 PM to administer regular seasonal flu vaccines, high dose vac-

cines recommended for ages 65 and older, and both pneumonia vaccines that are cur-

rently available. They are able to bill Medicare and most other commercial insurance

plans directly, most vaccines will be at no cost to you (depending on your insurance). You MUST bring identification and your prescription/medical/Medicare cards to this event. The vaccination process will take less than five minutes per person, but forms will also need to be filled

out for billing. The best part is that each person that is vaccinated will receive a $5 coupon to use on a Target shopping

trip! The coupons are valid for one month. Sign-ups will begin in August due to them needing to know how many vaccines and staff to bring with

them the day of the event. All coverage related questions must be directed towards your insurance carri-

er, the Avenbury and CVS staff cannot answer those questions for you.

Saturday Morning Coffee

New to our Community? Do you enjoy the various parties and activities that are planned every month

at Avenbury? If so, save the date of Saturday, October 5th, from 9 AM to 11 AM and sign up to join a

social event committee. Most long-time residents will tell you that they have met and have made new

friends by working on our social activities. Volunteers are those who make these activities happen for all to enjoy. The Social Committee has

some great events planned for the upcoming year, and this is your opportunity to get involved and sup-

port them by signing up to help. Board liaisons from the Architectural and Landscape Committees will

be in attendance as well. They hope to recruit new members and answer questions. So join your neigh-

bors and chat over coffee, tea, home-baked goods and pastries. A sign-up sheet will be in the Activity Book at the Lodge to this sign-up event. There is no cost to

Our next Travel Club meeting will be on Friday, October 11th at 11 AM at the Lodge.

The steering committee will present several ideas for travel in 2020 and those attending

the meeting will have the opportunity to make suggestions for trips and itineraries for

next year. All Avenbury residents are welcome. Please join us for a lively discussion.

Travel Club

Tech Nite at the Avenbury Lakes Lodge is taking a pause this school year. The Avon High

School Key Club members will continue their service at St. Mary of the Woods, which you

are invited to attend. They are scheduling only 2 evenings this year:

Monday, October 7th, and Monday, April 6th both from 6:30 PM until 8 PM.

Community Manager Update

- Pools: The last day of the 2019 Outdoor Pool season is Labor Day, September

2nd.THANK YOU to all of the Pool Monitors including: Jeanne Botson, Peg Sebas-

tian, Deb Baringer, Jinx Mutchler, Sue O’Hara, Ev Hagedorn and Jean Tremblay. THANK YOU

to the Pool Openers/Cleaners including: Margo Hirth, Mary Firis, Mary Jo Peter, Karen Lally,

Mike Teichman, Frank Caruso, Jerry Wearsch, Bob Becht, Ed Viancourt and Jim Lally. Last but

not least, THANK YOU to the Board of Directors, Lenny and Logan Evans, Rachel Norris, the

Brightview crew and the Hastings Life Guards for a safe and successful year!! - The Outdoor Pool will not be covered until September 18th, allowing for a more scenic pool deck

experience for residents. No swimming will be allowed during this extension since the Lifeguards

will be gone, but residents may continue to use the pool deck area into October. - Brightview: As of this day, the weather is still very dry. For those with irrigation systems, contin-

ue to use them without soaking turf areas. Brightview is spot mowing as needed. Pruning of new

growth is taking place of trees and shrubs in common and homeowner areas. There will be a sec-

ond pruning later this year. Leaf cleanup will begin when leaves have fallen. Work will continue

around the pond banks including cutting grasses and other plant materials and re-seeding select-

ed areas as weather conditions permit. - Roofing Project: Final Touch is on the home stretch on Pembrooke! That will be 44 new roofs for

the year. Thank you all for your patience during this extensive multi-year project. - Streets: The northern section of Buckingham was completed in August. Still to come this year

will be crack sealing throughout the community. Next year, the streets completed this year will

be seal coated. As this work is scheduled, we will inform everyone. - Lodge Administrator: For a short time, Rachel Norris considered taking another position and

leaving Avenbury Lakes. Fortunately for all of us, she came to her senses and decided to stay

right here where she belongs. Thank you for the work you do Rachel, we appreciate YOU!!

Avenbury residents are fortunate to have a group of folks

called Neighbor Helping Neighbor to help with odd jobs

around the house at no charge, except for parts, if needed. If you are new to the community, or are not aware of this service, please check the website on the

Resident’s Info page. Scroll down to Neighbor Helping Neighbor (NHN). These qualified handy men and

women will come to your home to replace windows, faucets, garbage disposals, toilet seats, smoke alarms

and batteries, porch, ceiling or garage lights and fixtures, and ceiling fans. They will unclog stopped up

sinks. They can hang pictures, shelves and grab bars; and this is just some of the things they can do – all

at no charge, except for the cost of any parts needed for the repair. To call for help, contact Joi Kime at the Info Center at 937-9441 or fill out the online request form.

The NHN team is known for their prompt response to calls, and their polite and skillful services. If you

would like to make a voluntary donation to the Community Fund for their services, your donation can

help to fund projects that benefit the entire community. Our thanks to the Neighbor Helping

Have you been thinking of honoring a loved one or sharing your thoughts in a per-

manent way? You can order an engraved paver for Avenbury’s paver \

garden, and add a clip art picture to make it more meaningful. If you’re wondering

about wording, take a stroll by our garden for ideas. This is a perfect time to order,

so that your personal brick can be installed in the fall.

The price for a 4 x 8 brick paver with up to 4 lines of text is $55, which includes sales tax, handling and

installation in the paver patio in the recreation area, near the tennis court. An 8 x 8 brick paver with up

to 6 lines of text is $105. Check out the $5 clip art options on the Community Fund Committee page on

the website, or look through the available pictures at the Info. Center. There are even military and or-

ganization symbols. There is one in our garden that is beautiful. Check it out! If you would like to “Put your mark on Avenbury” order blanks can be found on the website on the

Community Fund Committee page; or hard copy order forms can be picked up at the Lodge on the table

in front of the bulletin board, or at the Info. Center. Complete your order form and check

payable to “The Avenbury Lakes Community Fund” and turn it into the Info. Center on Southampton.

Avenbury Pavers

Did you know that you can help build your Community Fund by using

the Royal Oak Recycling Bins that are located in the RV lot at the East

end of Manchester Road? These bins are only for paper – junk mail, flyers, catalogs, newspapers,

magazines, shredded paper, phone books and corrugated cardboard boxes. We ask that corrugated cardboard boxes be broken down or flattened before placing them in the bins,

and that shredded paper be sealed in a taped or stapled paper bag. (Drug Mart sells paper leaf bags

that are perfect for this purpose.) If you use plastic bags to transport newspapers, catalogs and maga-

zines to the bin, please empty the plastic bags and take them with you. Cereal boxes or any boxes con-

taining food are not accepted. If you need help disposing of papers and boxes, please call Mary Lou Gross at 937-3302

July 20th,2019 was the date of the Picnic by the Pool and the

hottest day of the summer season!! While the participants enjoyed the Lodge's air conditioning,

Bob Becht and Bill Bogner were outside cooking over a VERY

hot grill! Bob and Bill are examples of Avenbury Residents who

put others needs before themselves! They were the stars of the

evening. A huge thank you to both of them. Thank you to Mary Firis and Bill Bogner for stepping in to make

the picnic go smoothly. They win the flexibility award! Thank

you to Kathy Ferenz, Mary Firis, Bonnie Kitral,

Karen Ostrander, Lorraine Schultz and Barb Turner for baking

the cakes, thanks to Ginny Connelly for her frosting skills,

thanks to Sandy and Winnie for baking the beans, and to Kathy

and Nancy for preparing the fruit. Thanks to Lorraine and

Karen for preparing the relish tray and salad, thanks to Bonnie,
