Fall protection
Introduction
Falls from height are the single biggest cause of death and serious injuries in
today’s workplace. Fall protection is a major issue for all kinds of business
whose workers need to operate effectively at height. That’s why North’s fall
protection products are designed with the user in mind. Our goal is to provide
high quality easy-to-use fall protection products so that your employees are
encouraged to use them.
Our range covers the complete scope of fall protection. North is also
dedicated to increasing compliance and worker safety through quality
enhancement, manufacturing innovation and the overall promotion of safety
in the workplace.
Hazard identification
Before selecting a fall protection system an assessment of the workplace
hazards and conditions should be made. This is done via a risk analysis. This
will help to determine the selected options to guard against any secondary
hazards which may be present in the work place.
Official advice summary
• Avoid work at height when possible
• When working at height cannot be avoided eliminate the risk and ensure
that workers are not exposed unnecessarily
• Try to make the work place as safe as possible with warning signs, fences
and safety areas etc.
• Where it is not possible to eliminate the risks of falling use a fall
protection system
When do you need fall protection
• Working height above 2 metres (differs from various countries)
there is a risk of falling
• Risk of falling results from risk analysis (responsibility of the
employer)
Fall Arrest system
A fall arrest system contains three parts. The anchorage point, a connecting
device (lanyard or SRL with energy absorber) and a full body harness. The goal
with a fall protection system is:
• Not to prevent falling; this is part of safe working procedure
• Arrest a fall
• Reduce the effect (impact) of a fall to a minimum
Minimum = 6 kN = 600 kg.
can only be achieved by shock absorption
Fall arrest related to the position of the anchorage point
A higher anchorage point, above the head, will reduce the fall distance and
therefore reduce the risk of injuries due to the impact forces of the fall.
1. Anchorage point minimal shoulder level
The worker will fall a maximum of 3.75m
2. Anchorage point above the head
the worker will fall a maximum of 1.75m
Work positioning and work restraint
A fall protection system is often used together with work positioning or work
restraint products. If a lifeline is not anchored vertically over the working place,
the worker will have a
danger of swinging. This
can injure the worker by
either hitting the ground
or an obstacle besides
him. Work position
equipment help eliminate
this danger. Work re-
straint product makes
sure that a worker can-
not get in to a dangerous
position. His equipment
is restraining his free-
dom of movement.

Rescue
What is often forgotten when working at height is to plan for an accident.
That is why a rescue and evacuation plan is mandatory to take into
consideration. Within 15 minutes a rescue action should be completed to
avoid possible dangers. North Safety Products offers unique rescue products
for various applications.

Make sure that the user of fall protection product received sufficient training
for their work task. Training has a “best before date” and should be
continuously updated.
Categories of Fall protection
1. Fall Arrest System
Is required working at height where fall hazards exist. The fall arrest system
reacts by absorbing the energy in a controlled manner.
For this system you need:
• Anchorage point / attachment
• Connecting device with energy absorber
• Full body harness (only use dorsal D-ring)
2. Work positioning system
Is required to hold a worker in place while his hands are free to work. It is not
a replacement for a fall protection system!
For this system you need:
• Anchorage point/ attachment
• Connection device and optional fall arrest system
• Full body harness (use hip D-ring)
3. Confined space systems
Required when workers must enter confided space such as acces holes,
tanks etc. to get safe access and can be rescued when needed
For this system you need:
• Anchorage point Tripod or Davit system
• Connection device retractable lifeline
• Full body harness (only use D-ring on back side and for lowering
use chest D-rings)
4. Rescue systems
Required where fall arrest systems are used, an appropriate plan must exist
in order to rescue a worker in case of a fall.
For this system you need:
• Anchorage point / attachment
• Evacuation unit, fall arrest device, self retracting life line with
rescue winch
• Full body harness (use chest D-ring)

Portable anchorage systems
Davit system
Fully telescopic aluminium legs are made of square tubing for added lightness
and required strength. The cast alloy head has an integrated pulley wheel
allowing a cable from a device to pass through the center of the head. This
eliminates costly pulleys and allows one of the 2 eyebolts in the head to be
used as a tie-off point for the topside worker. The retractable devices are
located on the outside of the working area which allows a narrower profile and
fit the tripod into tighter spaces.
Standards EN795: 1997, class B.
FP6600 tripod
Components are made of strong aluminium alloy (except for the bases). They
assemble and disassemble with the ability to transport from site to site quickly.
Is built tough to provide a safe secure anchorage for confined space entry,

Self retracting lifelines (SRL)
Duralite
Until now fall arrest blocks were either relatively heavy and serviceable, or
light weight and disposable. The North’s Duralite range combines the best
of both. A composite housing and Dyneema web lanyard result in a low
weight. The high tensile, non-corrosive metal parts result in a fully service-
able unit with a long lifetime. North’s Duralite range has a built-in energy
absorber. The dyneema webbing is cut resistant. The Duralite range can be
used for various applications like ladder climbing, industrial maintenance,
warehousing, etc.
