By the end of this training, in order to get your operatorcard, the instructor must attest to your workingknowledge of the instrument.

This is accomplished either through personalknowledge of your skills and abilities, or by personallydemonstrating your knowledge through use of the

instrument. This can be accomplished by using the instrument in a

    demonstration format for the instructor.

They are INSTRUMENTS that is used formeasuring the concentration of ethanol inhuman breath.

Instruments measure, machines do work.Machines break down, instruments needrecalibration.

Machines are used by mechanics, instrumentsare used by scientists.

Alco-Sensor III series begins on slide 5

Lifeloc FC20 begins on slide 29

Intoxilyzer 5000 series begins on slide 90

Certification for the ASIII and Intoxilyzer 5000 covers theentire series of those instruments that are approved for use inthe state of Idaho.

    How does it work?

The ASIII is a fuel cell instrument

A 1 mL sample is taken from the expired breath and analyzed by a chemical reaction with the alcohol on their breath.

Represents a single point in time snapshot of the alcoholcontent in the breath that was sampled.

    The fuel cell:

    ALCOHOL ACETIC ACID + e- CO 2 + O 2 + H 2O

Alcohol reacts to produce electrons (electricity). This electriccurrent represents the amount of alcohol in the breath sample.

    electrons

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    8/115

    How does it work?

The electrons are given off in an exact proportional

ratio with respect to the EtOH.Therefore the electric current produced by this reactionis directly proportional to the amount of EtOH present. This result is displayed on a digital readout as BrAC.

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    Specific?

The fuel cell is not specific to ethanol and will react

with all alcohols. Technically 18-8004 states It is unlawful for any person who

is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any otherintoxicating substances, or who has an alcohol concentrationof 0.08 . to drive or be in actual physical control of a motorvehicle

    Operation:

    The SET button controls the

spring-loaded sampling valve. With the SET button in thelocked-down position, theAlco-Sensor is ready to take asample.

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    11/115

The SET button clears the sample chamber when it isdepressed. This purges the chamber of all air andreadies it to accept a sample.

When the instrument is not actually reading a sample, the SET button should be locked down. This helps to

prevent the fuel cell from drying out.

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    12/115

    The READ button .

Light pressure on the READ button unlocks the SET

button and draws a 1ml sample of air into the fuel cellfor testing.

Continued full pressure on the READ button connectsthe 9-volt battery with the digital display and thealcohol reading appears. (Older version)

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    13/115

On the older versions, if you let go of the READ button, the display goes blank.

You must keep the pressure on the READ button untilthe display stops climbing and stabilizes.

The new version of the AS III; no need to hold READ button down.

The new version has the red slider on the side for releasing themouthpieces. It also does not have the liquid crystalthermometer.

    ASIIIa (the new version)

Once the READ button is pressed, (no need to hold it

down) the reading will appear dim. When it suddenly brightens, the analysis is finished and the peak readingis displayed.

  • 8/13/2019 Breath Testing Operator Class Instrumentation

    15/115

If the DIGITAL DISPLAY shows .888 , this means that the 9volt battery is low and should be replaced.

The new version may give you a bAT message toindicate that the battery need replacing.

Use only a 9-volt alkaline battery.

    AIR INLET PORT

This port has a flared top to hold the mouthpiece

    securely.

Air is drawn through the inlet port and into the fuelcell for analysis.

    Mouthpieces?

    The 2002 Operators Manual states:

Using mouthpieces of other design than those supplied by the manufacturer may cause inaccurate readings byas much as 10-20%. For instance, whistling or overlyrestrictive mouthpieces can either draw room air into

the breath sample or pressurize the systeminaccuratereadings

    LIQUID CRYSTAL THERMOMETER

Located on the back of the Alco-Sensor III.

Has a range of 20C to 38 C (the optimum operatingtemperature of the instrument ).

When reading the thermometer, use the last numberthat you can read clearly as the temperature.

    The New Version ASIIIa

Hold the SET and READ buttons down.

Temperature is displayed in degrees C.

Acceptable range for use is 15 C to 36 C.

    What does 15 C to 36 C equal in F ?? It would be a range between 59 F and 96F.

    General Maintenance:

Avoid exposure to cigarette smokeAvoid temperature extremesLock Set button between uses Cycle Set/Read if flooded, may require theinstrument to sit overnight.Use the instrument regularly. The moisture from your

breath will help keep the fuel cell moist andfunctioning properly for a long time.

You will get a printout after the last BLANK when you lock inthe SET button.

When the test is completed, enter the results on the log sheet.

If you have a printout, use the first time shown by the first BLANK. Logging the results is the last step in the Alco-Sensor test. Enter the information LEGIBLY, so it can be read at a later date.

Someone may have to testify to your handwritten results.
