Course Objectives

By the end of this course the student will be able to: Identify five breastfeeding community

resources. Explain three breastfeeding benefits to

pregnant and/or nursing mothers. Determine if a mother has an adequate

breastfeeding latch. Create a chart on breastfeeding stool

changes in the newborn.

Closing Discussions

Set aside the last 5-10 minutes of the class for open discussion. Allow students to ask questions.

If students do not have questions, proceed to the oral evaluation and/or quiz.

Oral Evaluation

Ask the participants: Possible answers:

1. How can you tell when a baby is hungry?

Any of the early, active and late hunger cues.

2. Name at least one thing that needs to be happening for a baby to have a good latch-on and nursing position?

Wide open mouth, baby’s body is in a straight line, baby and mom look and feel supported and comfortable, baby tucked in close to mom, mom and baby are tummy to tummy, etc.

3. How can a mother be able to tell your baby has any of the signs that he or she has had enough breastmilk?

Falls asleep, is calm, has relaxed hands and body, may have the hiccups but is calm and relaxed, or is peaceful
