The leading contemporary writer in Bengali.

Bengali is the language of the people of Bangladesh and Indian state West Bengal.

She was born in 1926 in Dhaka,Bangladesh (former East-Bengal).

She is from a well known and intellectual family.

Graduated in 1946 from Santiniketan (founded by Rabindranath Tagore) in Calcutta.

She devoted several years to political activism in rural Bengal with her first husband.

In 1963, she received her Master's degree in English Literature from Calcutta University and became a professor of English at a Calcutta college.
