Breast cancer starts in the cells of the breast and can be characterized by the discovery of a cancerous growth or tumour that can be traced back to the breasts

When considering where breast cancer can be detected, know that breast tissue covers an area larger than just the breast – it extends up to the collarbone and from the armpit across to the breastbone in the centre of the chest

There are multiple forms of breast cancer that effect different part of the breast

Regular exercise is critical to staying healthy – helps to control weight, maintain healthy bones/muscles/joints, promotes psychological well being in addition to reducing your risk of multiple forms of cancer

Exercising 3-5 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes significantly reduces your chances of developing breast cancer

Think about it this way – there is no downside to exercise!

Breathing techniques help to reduce stress – which can significantly contribute to the development of not only breast cancer, but other cancers as well

Conscious breathing can quiet the mind, reduce anxiety, develop concentration, stimulate inner calm and encourage healthy sleeping patterns

It is important to take breaks and just breathe when life is overwhelming

About 25% of all women diagnosed with breast cancer find cancerous lumps through a routine self-examination

The most effective time to conduct a self exam is right after your period – doing a breast exam during or right before your period is not effective due to hormonal changes that may result in lumpier breasts

Note: breast lumps can vary throughout the month, and some women are just prone to having more lumps in their breasts – also known as being cystic

Hang a KABC self-exam breast card where you can easily see it - be consistent in timing and check thoroughly each month

Don’t forget to check wherever breast tissue is (i.e. armpits – this can be a prime spot for the development of breast cancer)

Women who smoke are at a significantly higher risk for developing breast cancer thank non-smokers

Parabens - found mostly in sunscreen, lotions and deodorants

Phthalates – found in nail polishes, detergents and cleaning products

Heavy Metals – include materials such as aluminum, which can significantly increase he risk of developing breast cancer
