ROOM TO GROW

To complement the MedTech Campus offering, Anglia Ruskin University will be opening its own 10,000 square-foot Medical Business Innovation Centre (Anglia Ruskin MedBIC) on its Chelmsford Campus to support start-up and spin-out companies. Successful ventures will be able to move on to their preferred MedTech Campus site as their needs and ambitions grow. We also plan to create dedicated MedTech Campus innovation infrastructure on site.

THE ANGLIA RUSKIN MEDTECH CAMPUS IS A GLOBAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN:

Anglia Ruskin University and its Postgraduate Medical Institute, providing a network of over 20 acute hospital, mental health and community-based providers; and

three local authorities: Chelmsford City, Harlow District and Southend-on-Sea Borough Councils.

Launched at the House of Commons, the enterprise is supported by central government, the NHS and other healthcare providers, and welcomed by industry. Specialising in near-market solutions for products and services, the MedTech Campus will serve healthcare providers and commissioners, along with suppliers to this broad marketplace.

Organisations will be able to take advantage of two main benefits.

ALL THE INFRASTRUCTURE NECESSARY TO SUPPORT INNOVATION

The MedTech Campus is far more than a science park. Based over three connected sites in Chelmsford, Harlow and Southend-on-Sea, it will form a ‘MedTech triangle’, offering at least 120 acres of innovation space, complete with all the infrastructure needed to transform ideas into successful products and services. These commercially driven site developments are being promoted by the partnership, bringing together landowners, developers and investors.

Opening in 2014-15, with planning consents being secured in 2013.

The MedTech Campus offers all of the essential components of the innovation process, driving business growth in the UK MedTech sector.

It will also help to establish Essex and the UK as a global centre in this sector and will secure local and national economic growth.

“We are committed to supporting a number of initiatives to drive forward medical innovation and the Anglia Ruskin MedTech Campus is one of these. Such developments will allow us to be world leaders in medical innovation and will provide a springboard for economic growth and development in the UK.”

Lord Howe, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health

All of our supporters recognise the importance of the MedTech sector and the huge global, European, UK and regional market opportunities it offers. The global MedTech market is valued at £150-170 billion with the UK market estimated at £15 billion.

Research on forecasting the market suggests growth at 5-10% per annum. Major demographic, cost, care demand and technology factors are driving the market at pace. EU and UK government policies are now highly supportive towards this sector for these reasons. Many conglomerates within the private care, high-end IT, defence and engineering technology sectors and the life science sectors are also moving into the MedTech area, creating a super cluster around MedTech.

If you are seeking venture capital or other funding opportunities for your idea, we can introduce you to a number of different options. We will work with you to assess your needs and choose the right source or sources of support.

FINANCING PROOF OF CONCEPT

Anglia Ruskin University has set up a £500k proof of concept fund, providing early-stage and start-up companies with access to essential capital. The fund will run competitions on a rolling basis, with winning entrepreneurs gaining seed money, Campus mentorship, incubation space and training to enable them to secure further investment and quick adoption of their ideas.

More will follow. We are in discussion with angel investors, the broad industry and venture capital groups who are keen to join our network, expanding our current fund and establishing a follow-on investment programme.

FURTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

We help companies with ideas to access government grants and EU funds for SMEs. We also plan to secure up to £2.2m of specific funds in 2013 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This scheme will provide Low Carbon MedTech Innovation Grants to advance the innovation activity of SMEs based in the Eastern region. Funding will support core areas, including:

FUNDING IDEAS

prototyping of medical and telehealth devices

product sustainability advice

regulatory advice on CE marking, FDA accreditation and other key matters

legal issues, such as patents and Intellectual Property rights

proof of concept works

proof of market studies

purchase of additional consultancy time

purchase of product testing

clinical trials

compatibility testing costs.

Our project team will also work with companies to support their investment readiness and sales offer. Help will include expert guidance on health economics.

SUCCESSFUL, SUBSIDISED PROGRAMMES

Anglia Ruskin University has over 15 years’ experience of delivering commercial results through subsidised knowledge transfer programmes. As a member of the MedTech Campus business network, you can work with a dedicated team to develop your strategic plan and secure government funding for business growth. We run two types of scheme: Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and the Low Carbon KEEP (Knowledge-East of England-Partners) programme.

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PARTNERSHIPS (KTPS)

Our KTPs have helped businesses across a number of sectors launch products or improve existing ones, establish a marketing function, introduce systems and technologies, expand overseas and compete harder.

The three-way partnership brings together your business with a leading academic and a talented graduate to work on a project that is central to your current needs. Projects run from six months to three years in length and businesses benefit from a government grant of up to 67% of the total project cost. KTPs have been funded by the government for 30 years; a clear indication of their effectiveness.

LOW CARBON KEEP PROGRAMME

Supported by the ERDF, this programme works just like KTPs, but with two set goals: improving SMEs’ competitiveness and delivering a low carbon project, typically through developing new products or improving existing ones or adapting processes to reduce carbon footprint. Projects run for between four and 18 months, with a grant of 40% available to cover the project costs. Funding is also available to recoup 40% of the cost of purchasing capital equipment and software, fundamental to the project’s success.

The MedTech Campus provides a single point of entry to an unrivalled world of clinical and user trials, as well as access to valuable focus and early-adoption groups.

OFFERING AN UNRIVALLED TEST BED

Anglia Ruskin University works closely with the NHS Trusts in Essex and Hertfordshire to offer better, and more competitive, services to industry partners wishing to run clinical trials and gain early adoption of, and feedback on, their products. This collaboration, called the Anglia Ruskin Clinical Trials Unit (ARCTU), includes six Acute NHS Trusts and a large Mental Health Trust, and has access to primary care patients through the Postgraduate Medical Institute. Together, the Trials Unit covers over three million patients, and in excess of 10 million patients for tertiary services.

ARCTU offers expertise in research design, statistics, health economics, licensing, project and data management, ethical approvals and experienced clinical research nurse support. It is an official UK Quintiles Site. Quintiles is the world’s largest Contract Research Organisation, delivering commercial clinical research across 60 countries. In addition to formal clinical trials, we can evaluate products and innovations across our broad network.

The Unit’s remit goes beyond a particular speciality or methodology. It delivers mixed-methods research along the care pathway, from ill-health prevention and primary care, and mental health and community services, to acute hospital and specialist tertiary care.

TESTING AND DEVELOPING

The Anglia Ruskin Clinical Trials Unit holds a “unique position within the partner network due to the foresight and vision of the participant members through Anglia Ruskin University.” James Brooke, Director, WEA Prime Site Management Integrated Site Services, Quintiles

“Our business competes against 20,000 medical apps on one store alone. What interests us is providing the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. Assistance in designing and running clinical studies, analysing results and disseminating findings in clinical papers is immensely valuable – proving our online patient intelligence and Electronic Health Record support platform helps increase positive patient outcomes and saves time and money by a significant degree.”

Jack Bowman, CEO, Handle My Health

REDUCING RISK THROUGH MARKET INSIGHT

We have well-established connections with the NHS and can call upon thousands of academic and clinical researchers who can advise companies and inventors on their product or service ideas across the full healthcare landscape. Our network is set to expand further when we join UCLPartners to create an Academic Health Science Network (one of 15 nationally). Through this initiative, companies will gain access to leading clinicians and researchers across Essex, Hertfordshire and London.

Our network of experts offers quick, practical advice, supported by state-of-the-art specialist laboratories and other dedicated research facilities. We can carry out cost-effective, critical reviews, offering companies an independent, second opinion on their products. We can help with proof of concept, proof of market and data or market analysis. We also assist businesses by investigating broader applications for existing products and help with rapid prototyping, product testing, validation and development, model generation and computer simulations in the latest laboratories. To this, we add privileged access to a number of industry-owned, highly specialised research and development facilities, including Olympus KeyMed’s medical device manufacturing centre.

JUST IMAGINECLINICAL TRIALS WITHOUT THE TRIBULATIONS

“Olympus is recognised worldwide as an innovator and the company is keen to work in partnership with like-minded entrepreneurs and inventors to help take commercially interesting ideas to prototype and beyond.”

The route to market for new MedTech and assisted living products and services can be challenging, particularly for start-up ventures and SMEs. Through our network and partner organisations, MedTech Campus members have unrivalled access to key organisations across the East of England that are responsible for delivering health and social care. Our health economic assessment programme also opens doors, preparing and presenting the case for innovations to key customers at the right level in their organisation. This approach helps secure both pre-commercial and commercial procurement contracts.

From the outset, we focus on the global healthcare marketplace, rather than just UK opportunities. Our links with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the Department of Health present companies with international opportunities and contacts.

Through our partners and network, you can tap into a pool of resources covering business planning, regulatory affairs, accounting, banking, Intellectual Property protection and other key areas.

Our local authority partners have detailed local knowledge and dedicated teams who are ready to showcase the MedTech Campus site locations, especially what the surrounding area offers to support your investment in the Campus. They will also introduce you to a wider network of local knowledge and business connections to help your venture succeed.

MedTech Campus members can take advantage of Anglia Ruskin University’s flexible workforce training and skills development support and assessments. Specialist teams can provide Continuing Professional Development programmes, bespoke training and work-place degrees, and offer existing learning at a distance as well as face-to-face.

We can introduce you to multi-million pound research and development facilities, along with academic expertise found at Anglia Ruskin University and from within our wider network, which includes the Postgraduate Medical Institute. Event facilities can also be hired, from conference auditoriums to meeting rooms.

COMING SOONWe will continue to evolve our Business Network Services package and lead a number of innovative projects.

THE MEDTECH AND ASSISTED LIVING OBSERVATORY (MTALO)

This groundbreaking Observatory will provide a single portal where all publically available global information on MedTech and assisted living can be accessed and smartly analysed. It will also provide secured access to a number of restricted public, private, academic and third-sector databases, offering industry an unrivalled source of both structured and unstructured data.

Behind the Observatory, we plan to make use of advanced analytical systems to deliver fast, commercially relevant answers to MedTech questions. Users will be able to scan the world’s social media, scientific and medical documents, patent databases, industry and public sector information to gain detailed, focused reports. This will allow healthcare commissioners to get procurement decisions right first time, more of the time; businesses and their backers to make well-informed investment decisions; and customers, users, carers and patients to decide which products and services are right for them.

The data held by the Observatory will also provide a simulation environment for impact modelling. Government and industry will be able to examine how new MedTech products and services will impact on the population.

AN INNOVATION COMMUNITY

We are developing a secure, cloud-based innovation architecture that will connect clinicians, academics, industry, government, third-sector members and patient and user groups – transforming the way these groups work together. This virtual community will host professional social networking, web conferencing, think places, web jams, technology adoption pages, project collaborations and management, special interest communities and instant messaging, as well as encourage external collaboration.

ASSISTED LIVING HOTEL

We are planning to locate the world’s first Assisted Living Hotel on the MedTech Campus. This private- sector delivered facility will provide:

a hotel with private care resources, including bespoke accommodation and assisted living technology

a test bed where guests, patients, users, providers, commissioners and industry are able to evaluate the benefits of new technology for themselves

exhibition and meeting room space for the MedTech and assisted living sector that is continually upgraded as new technology emerges

training, education and networking spaces

a business space for start-ups and spin-outs

a touch-down space for larger companies wanting business space in this sector.
