iNSTRuCTiON CORNERFAiRWAY BuNKERS
It isn’t pretty watching most golfers try to hitout of a fairway bunker. The problem is theyuse their normal swing. If you drive with yourlegs on the downswing, like on regular shotsfrom the grass, you sinkin the sand and hitbehind the ball. That’sno way to get to thegreen.Focus on two keys.
First, stand tall ataddress and feel likeyou keep that height allthe way through the shot. Second, swing a littleeasier and with less leg action. That will helpyou clip the ball off the top of the sand insteadof driving down into it. If you do it right, you’llfeel like your arms are swinging past your bodythrough impact. A good swing thought is, morearms, less body. One last thing on fairway bunkers: Take a
club with enough loft to clear the lip in front ofyou. If there’s no lip, take an extra club becauseyou want to swing easier.
LGA NEWSQuARTERS FOR 3-PuTTSThe LGA is sponsoring a charitable initiative
entitled “Quarters for 3 putts.” For every threeputt (or heaven for bit more) you incur during
a round, you are to contribute 25¢ in the jar at the cashregister in the Pro Shop. Since we don’t want to breakyour personal bank, a maximum of $1 per round issuggested. At the end of the calendar year, all moniescollected will be given to the WSCGA Junior GolfFoundation. The WSCGA Junior Golf Foundation is a 501(c)3
non-profit organization whose mission is to promotejunior golf in the State of South Carolina by providinggolf scholarships, playing and teaching the game ofgolf, and promoting amateur golf. In 2014, theFoundation spent over $30,000 in supporting thegrowth of the game through several outlets, includingthe South Carolina High School Golf League; hosting
a High School Invitational; supporting the GA/SCJunior Girls Challenge Matches; and giving financialassistance to juniors to help support the growth oftheir golf game. The WSCGA Junior Golf Foundationwas able to reach over 700 girls!Your participation in this initiative and contribution
is 100% but we sincerely hope you will join us in thiscause. Not only will we collect funds towards aworthy cause but also have an additional incentive toimprove our short game.

GREENS RESuRFACiNGThe summer of 2015 will be an important timefor our Club as we undertake a major golfcourse improvement project – the conversion
of our golf course greens from tiff-dwarf to mini-verde grass. Over the past two years we haveresurfaced our putting green which has provided usthe opportunity to assess the “new” mini-verde grassside by side with the “old” tiff-dwarf grass, as wellas select the optimum method for the resurfacingprocess. We have decided to utilize the no-tillmethod for our resurfacing project. This processconsists of killing the existing tiff-dwarf grass withtwo applications of a non-select herbicide roughly 7days apart (the first application is planned forTuesday, May 26th). Then we will aerify and verti-cut the greens to break up the left-over organicmaterial, apply a fumigant to the soil for sterilization, and then sprig with the mini-verde bermuda grass forgrow-in. After sprigging occurs, the greens will beheavily watered (approximately every hour for oneweek) and then watering regularly until the grow-inis complete. The greens on the course will be closedfor the project beginning June 1st, but we will havetemporary greens in use for continued playthroughout the summer. We plan to re-open thegreens for regular play sometime in mid August, assuming that the weather cooperates.
COuRSE Will BE OPENThe Club and golf course (utilizing temporarygreens) will still be open for normal businesshours during the summer, while we resurface
the greens. In fact, we will even be hosting some fun,new golf events over the summer such as a par 3tournament, hickory shaft tournament and a nightgolf scramble. Also, some of the dates of ourtournaments have changed in an effort to workaround the greens project. So, make sure to check the2015 Tournament book and read the monthlynewsletter for information regarding all of our events. Our weekly blitzes will also still be continuedthroughout the summer, but don’t forget to sign-upfor our events. Please remember that you cannot post
scores for handicap purposes from any rounds whiletemporary greens are in use. However, any roundsthat you play at other courses not utilizing temporarygreens, must still be posted. For any questionsregarding tee-times or events, please contact the golfshop staff.
RECiPROCiTiESIn an effort to provide our membership withopportunities to play other golf courses thissummer, we have made reciprocal arrangements
with several local golf courses that have offered areduced rate for our members to play. A list of thesecourses and rates is available on the Club website andat the golf shop. All tee-times must be arranged byour golf staff in order to receive the reduced rate. Ourstaff will also be glad to call other golf courses as well,to help set up tee-times at courses that are notincluded on our list. We’ll do our best to get the bestrate possible for you.
GOlF lESSONS & CliNiCSThis summer we will be offering our golfmembers lessons at ½ price rates for privategolf instruction. And, we will be offering a
number of specialized clinics such as short gameclinics, putting clinics, club fittings, demo days,Welcome to Golf 1 & 2 clinics and Ladies Only clinicsin an effort to help you improve your game and findthe right equipment. For our junior golfers, we willcontinue to host our normal summer junior campsand Little Links Golf League, in addition toparticipating in the Charleston Junior Interclub. Please look for more details to be published, as weget closer to the summer months.

It’s been another severely wet and cold winter. Wethought last winter was bad, but this year hasbeen worse. We’ve had more rainfall and it was
consistently colder. The good news is that the greenshave responded fairly well to the warm temperatureswe have experienced recently and we are hopeful thatthis will continue. As we progress through thespring, we will continue to top dress and roll thegreens on Mondays (as weather allows) in an effortto help smooth out the surfacesfor play. We will also beaerifying the greens with aneedle tine machine (small holepunch) on Mar. 30 to break upany algae from the winter rain, dry out the greens and allowoxygen to get down into theroot system. This year we willbe skipping our normal curfewapplication that we have usedto decrease the high nematodecounts in the soil. We areskipping that applicationbecause we will be fumigating all of the greens inJune for our resurfacing project, which will sterilizethe soil and take care of the nematode issue this year.As the course dries out we will also begin mowingfairways regularly and top off the poa-annua that hasgrown in over the winter. There were a number of projects we were able to get
to this winter and some that we were not. Inpreparation for our greens resurfacing coming up this
summer, we have been cutting and trimming trees toaddress the shade issues that we have. This work hasbeen completed on holes #6, 10, 11, 12 & 17. We stillhave a few more areas to address in the upcomingweeks. We have also been installing wood blocksaround many of the curves of the cart paths where ourcarts typically run off of the path. We still have toaddress the drainage issue on the right side of #4green. Unfortunately, the rain has made it impossible
to get to the drainage break.Once the ground dries out, wewill be able to begin that project. The red junior/family teemarkers have been painted blackto cut down on the confusion ofthem being a 100 yard marker. And, once it is warm enough wewill also be addingcorresponding color indicators onthe cart path to help identify theapproximate location of thefamily/junior tee markers. Weencourage our beginning golfers
and juniors to utilize them to increase your enjoymentas you learn and improve your golf games. All cartpaths, irrigation heads and drains have been edgedthis winter in preparation for the spring. We hope youare able to get out and enjoy the spring weather aswell as the golf course. If you have any questions, please email me at gwilliams@coosawcreek .com. our 2014 charities, then selected 2 charities to supportthis year. Our 2015 charities are ... (drum roll please)...Dorchester Seniors, Inc(http://dorchesterseniors.com), and Keeper of theWild (http://keeperofthewild.org). After the charitieswere chosen, Debbie Adrian had a lovely program"Creative Centerpieces for All Occasions". About adozen tables were each decorated by a differentdesigner from our community. These ladiesshowcased their talents in not only crafting floralcenterpieces, but entire tablescapes with new andheirloom vases, china, and dinnerware. Wow! Thankyou to all of the ladies who took part, and especially toDebbie for organizing the evening."

CRAPE MuRdER, SHE WROTE… BY MARY GLENN RAY, MASTER GARDENER
The Coosaw Creek Garden Club is encouragingeveryone to learn the proper maintenance ofcrape myrtles. The term “crape (crepe)
murder” is credited to a Southern Living articlepublished in 1997.Generally speaking, crape myrtles do not require
extensive pruning. There is no verified documentationof when or where this practice of crape murder began.Unfortunately, the practice continues for manyreasons such as the mistaken idea that topping ofcrape myrtles is necessary in order to promote bloom. This is incorrect. Also, many people see a landscapertopping trees in a neighbor’s yard and think “topping’is a good horticultural practice because a landscapecompany is doing it. Wrong again! Aggressivepruning may be done on crape myrtles because thespecimen was planted in the wrong place…i.e. thevariety chosen was the wrong size for the site. Thecrape myrtle is mutilated in order to fit the space. Itwould be better to remove the tree and select a varietythat is better suited for that site.“Crape murder” results in weaker branches that are
more prone to wind damage and insect infestation. You will have a healthier and stronger tree if youdiscontinue this practice. It is not a “quick fix”. Two great, short videos on how to properly prune
your crape myrtles: Mississippi State University/Dr. Lelia Kellywww.youtube.com/watch?v=xzzNaId-XjE)and University of Arkansas/Dr. Jim Robbins. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hZJRWkRH5M
There are several Internet sites with informationabout proper pruning and reversing the damage ofcrape murder. The following are excerpts from 3articles. Please see the sites for the full article withmore valuable information.
Prune Crape Myrtles the Right Way by Dr. Allen Owings/LSU
www.lsuagcenter.com/news_archive/2014/December/headline_news/Prune-crape-myrtles-the-right-
way-.htm
An unfortunate trend in crape myrtle pruning is to"lop off the tops," which results in a crew-cutappearance. The lush growth that occurs at these cutsites appears vigorous but is actually structurallyweak and is more susceptible to fungus diseases suchas powdery mildew. Worse yet, when pruning is doneimproperly over several seasons, unsightly large, swollen knobs form at the pruned locations. The life ofa crape myrtle is shortened and the natural beauty ofthe tree is destroyed by this pruning technique.Examples of appropriate reasons for pruning includeeliminating crossed and rubbing branches, removinglow branches, removing weak, thin branches from theinner part of the tree, trimming off old seedpods, creating a shapelier tree and keeping suckers removedfrom the base of the trunk.Stop the Crape Murder by Greg Grant/AustinState
University: I know of NO educated horticulturist orarborist that endorses the practice of topping crapemyrtles or any ornamental trees for that matter. Theonly pruning crape myrtles require is to thin out thetrunks on young trees leaving somewhere around 3 to7 permanents trunks. The fewer you have, the moreyou can admire their shape and smooth texture. Eachyear around early spring, all you do is remove anynew suckers that appear from the ground or from youmain trunks. That’s it. Yes, if the tree is small you canremove the seedpods, but realize that this is purely foraesthetic reason. Removing dried pods during thewinter doesn’t promote any more bloom during thesummer. Removing them during the summer doespromote faster re-bloom however.

Recovering From Crape Murder by Ken Tilt/Auburn University: www.lsuagcenter.com/news_archive/2014/December/headline_news/Prune-crape-myrtles-the-right-
way-.htm
Recovering from crapemurder isa drastic process, but easy to doand you can expect rapid recovery. When trees are topped or stubbedback to chest high, a profusion ofsprouts or a witches broomdevelops below the cut. Theattachment of these sprouts isweak, dense and susceptible tobreakage and more diseaseproblems. The winter silhouette iscrapemurder ugly. The bestrecovery method is to cut the tree
to within 1 to 2 inches of theground in early March before newgrowth begins. Shortly thereafter, new sprouts emerge in clusters ofgrowth. All the stored energy inthe roots is forced up into anumber of new buds. These budsbreak and grow very fast. After 2to 3 weeks, select 3 to 5 of the mostvigorous new shoots, arrangedaround the tree, growing out fromthe center. Sometimes a singletrunk is desired when you have atree close to a sidewalk. In thiscase, select one sprout and removeall others. Keep the tree clean ofsprouts except for the one youselected. Remove and continue toremove other existing shoots andany new ones that emerge later.
