Many exercisers agree that uplifting music helps increase energy and motivation

while working out. This is especially important during the holiday season, when ''to-

do'' lists are long and the temptation to skip workouts is high.

Making fitness a priority is a key to holiday weight-loss success. Use these festive

songs of the season to help you create a perfect holiday workout playlist that will

keep you moving and in the holiday spirit at the same time!

    Ingredients

    Lava Rock Cookies

    2 1/4 cups sifted

    confectioners' sugar

    6 tablespoons

    unsweetened cocoa powder

    2 tablespoons

    all-purpose flour

    Generous pinch of sea salt

    3 large egg whites

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups pecans, chopped and toasted

1 1/2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, grated

    4 teaspoons cocoa nibs

Preheat oven to 325F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or nonstick baking mats. Thoroughly stir together confectioners sugar, cocoa, flour and salt

in a large bowl. Beat in egg whites, one at a time, with an electric mixer on low speed. Add vanilla paste (or extract) and beat for 1 1/2 minutes on high speed,

scraping down the sides of the bowl several times. Fold in pecans, chocolate and cocoa nibs until evenly

incorporated. Spoon the dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake the cookies, in batches, in the center of the oven, until dry and glossy on the surface but soft in the centers when pressed, 15 to 17 minutes. Let cool

on the pan for 5 to 10 minutes. Carefully transfer the cookies, on the paper or mats, to a wire rack to cool

    completely.

    How I lost weight!

I was diagnosed diabetic in 2007 and when I saw my weight nearing

the 300 lb. mark, I said to myself thats enough. Now, I was motivated.

I wanted and needed to lose the weight. First I had to stop eating so

much pizza! I started facing emotions head-on instead of eating the pain

away. I purchased some workout clothes and shoes. I got a good weight

scale and began to weigh myself every other day. I realized that monitoring

my progress should be constant. To stop thinking about food all the time, I

started working out at the Conway Recreation Center. At the center I could

exercise and socialize. I also talked to others about their weight loss

success and failures. Now in my sixties, I wanted go back in time and

weigh about the same as when I was mid twenties.

I had to completely change my diet and eat healthy foods with

healthy portions. I started eating six small meals a day full of fruits,

veggies, whole grains, and lean meats. My diet consists of about 60% fruits

and veggies. Although I was losing weight, I kept gaining it back in a few

months. Learning Tai Chi in 2010 helped me stay on track. At first, I used

DVDs and the internet to view various Tai Chi routines. I did Tai Chi at

home until I felt comfortable enough to do it in the local park. I became a

Tai Chi instructor to stay motivated and to help others. Fitness became a

    permanent part of my lifestyle.

Talking to and listening to new found friends at the gym helped a

lot, but I still needed something for balancing the Tai Chi, diet and walking.
