What is a safety switch?It’s basically an enclosed switch with an external operating handle mounted on the side. When the enclosure door is opened, the switch blades must be visible so the user can easily see whether they are open or closed, hence whether power is on or off. How are they used?As a disconnecting means for electrical power…could be where power enters a facility (service entrance) or for one of the facility’s branch circuits, or could be power to a machine, motor or any other system. It‘s one of the most commonly used disconnect swit-ches in the industry.

Why are they called “Heavy Duty”?It’s industry standard terminology based on a switches ratings and application. Generally, 600V rated switches with 200kA short circuit ratings are Heavy Duty and are typically used in heavy commercial or industrial applications. Switches rated 240V or lower, with 100kA or lower short circuit ratings are Light Duty or General Duty and are typically used for residential and light commercial applications.

A safety switch is a very common type of a enclosed switch. Safety switches are used for two purposes:
− As a disconnecting mean for a service entrance. − As a disconnecting mean for motors.
In either these two cases, a safety switch may include a fuse for over current protection. The safety switch enclosure provides a de-gree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with live electrical equipment. It also provides protection for the enclosed equipment against specific environmental conditions.
The safety switch can be used to disconnect a motor. The National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 430.102 requires disconnecting means within sight of a motor and the machinery driven by the motor. This means that the disconnecting device must be visible from the motoror machinery and not more than 50 feet away.
A safety switch without fuses is referred to as a non-fusible safety switch. A non-fusible safety switch has no circuit protection capability. It just provides a convenient mean to open and close a circuit. When opening the circuit, it disconnects the load from its source of electrical power, and closing the circuit connects the load. The circuit protection must be provided by external over current device.
A safety switch can be combined with fuses in a single enclosure. This is referred to as a fusible safety switch. The switch provides a convenient means to manually open and close the circuit, and the in built-in fuses provide over current protection for the circuit.
The safety switch has a current rating, which also is called ampere rating. This is the maximum continuous current the switch is designed to carry. All Heavy Duty safety switches are horsepower rated. The horsepower (HP) is used for electrical machines to de-fine the electrical motor's power output. Safety switches are rated according to the maximum voltage they can handle. The voltage rating of the switch must be at least equal to the circuit voltage.

General duty switches are intended for power supplies rated at 240 VAC or less and where the available fault current is less than 100kA.
Heavy duty switches are intended for power supplies rated up to 600 VAC and are designed to withstand a short-circuit current of maximum 200kA.
ABB Heavy duty safety switches can be used on power supplies up to 600 Volts in applications where the available fault current is 200kA or less. The cover is interlocked to prevent someone from opening it unintentionally while the switch is in the “ON" position or from turning ON the switch unintentionally while the cover is open. Heavy duty safety switches also have cover and handle padlocking capabilities.
Ampere ratings: 30, 60, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, or 1200 A
Suitable fuses for EOH range: Class RK1 (30-600A), Class RK5 (30-400A), Class J (30-600A), Class L (800 and 1200A switches only), Class T (60-400 A )
Voltage ratings: 240/480/600 VAC
Short-circuit current withstand ratings: ABB heavy duty sa-fety switches 30-600A are suitable for use on systems capable of delivering not more than 200kA RMS symmetrical amperes of fault current when Class J or R fuses are installed. The 800 and 1200 A switches are suitable to use on circuits capable of delivering not more than 200kA RMS symmetrical amperes of fault current when Class L fuses are installed.
ABB offers a complete range of heavy duty safety switches with Type 1, 3R, 12 and 4X (stainless steel) enclosures. All hea-vy duty safety switches are also available with a viewing window or equipped with neutral terminal.
ABB heavy duty safety switches are available in 304 grade stainless steel as standard for Type 4X enclosures. As an option these enclosures can be ordered with the more corrosion resis-tant 316 grade stainless steel. Type 316 stainless steel enclo-sures are especially suited for tough environments containing a high level of chlorine or other chemicals. This type of environ-ments are commonly found in marine, waste management, food and beverage, petrochemical, and mining applications.
