“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
These verses are talking about the patience of God. He wants us as Christians to strive for excellence in our walk with Him. The first part of this text makes me think of Peter and John in Acts, where in chapter 5 verses 41 it says; “For they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to shame for His name.”
What this text is referring to is what happened earlier in the text. Peter and John were beaten and whipped for preaching the gospel in the temple, but what astonishes me is their attitude towards their punishment. They didn’t cry, they didn’t weep, they rejoiced for they were being persecuted for Christ’s sake.
In the other verses it talks about patience and to let patience have its perfect work in us. The way we learn patience is through time, that’s the big word “time”. I once had a pastor of mine say, “God does not just give us patience automatically; He gives us opportunities to be patient.” Those words has helped me through a lot of heartache and helped me avoid giving a lot of heartache.
Waiting is always hard because we are human and we want it now. That’s just how we are but God wants us to be patient and through us being patient, the fruit of righteousness will be produced in our lives.
