Images of desperate desert battles under broiling sun orthe slap of mallet against a bamboo root polo ball werecreated by A. J. C. Ash, sales manager for a South Africanpith helmet manufacturing concern when he visited the WorldTrade Center recently to develop sales for his company. Herehe shows one of the helmets to Mrs. Petra Ayala, secretary atthe center. Helmets manufactured by firms owned by the man-aging director of the company, G. D. Mol, D.F.C., were used byboth the German Africa Korps and opposing South Africantroops in North Africa during World War II. The Mol family, who operated a pith helmet manufacturing factory in theNederlands for generations, fled to England when Hollandfell to the advancing German army, which quickly took overthe plant and the helmets on hand and started supplyingtheir own troops.
