The river Danube divides the city decisivelybetween the old and new. On the north arethe quaint streets of the Old Town, theStare Mesto, with sights such as StMartin’s cathedral, Bratislav Castle, StMichael’s Tower and the Primate’s Palace.Linking the two sides of the river is thehuge Novy Most or SNP (Slovak NationalUprising) bridge, which has a restaurant atthe top offering incredible views of the cityand the Carpathian mountains in thedistance.

Bratislava CastleWhen Bratislava was part of theAustro-Hungarian Empire, the castle wasthe centre of this extraordinary monarchy.This fairy tale like giant box has a colourfulpast. It was built by King Sigismund in the15th century, again by Empress MariaTheresa in the 18th century. In 1811, itsown garrison of Austrian soldier got drunkand burned it down. It was restored by thecommunists.

Today the castle houses the fascinatingSlovak National Museum. Go up its CrownTower, where you can enjoy spectacularviews of the southern Carpathianmountains and Austria.

St. Martin’s CathedralThe most historical monument in Slovakia,

St Martin’s Cathedral is where Hungarianrulers were crowned for over 250 years.Indeed the steeple is topped by a tinygilded Hungarian crown. Built in the 14thand 15th centuries by the creators of StStephen’s cathedral in Vienna, St Martin’sboasts a neo-Gothic interior that includescarved animals and figures on the pews inthe choir. The most interesting part of theinterior is the striking sculpture of StMartin on a horse, designed by Baroquesculptor, George Raphael Donner.

Certainly not as saturated with bars asPrague, Bratislava does have a growingnumber of good places to go and isbuilding a reputation as a nightlife capital.It is easy to avoid tourist traps by headingto some of the places to go. It is a popular tradition for Bratislavafamilies to do their weekend produceshopping at one of the city’s lively marketplaces. They are a welcomeoff-the-beaten-path sight for visitors whocan sample local dishes. Small open airmarkets can be found on Polna near theMedical Garden and Sancova,Mlynarovicova on Petrzalka. The liveliestmarket is the one on Mileticova Street,which sells lots of well made, cheapclothing. It’s busiest on Saturday’s. Taketram 9 to Zahradnicka to get there.

There are numerous shopping mallsthroughout Bratislava including Aupark onthe right side of the Danube next to SadJanka Kráľa park. Polus City Center is onVajnorska 10 minutes away from the citycentre.
