tom harland, prodUction assistant, Watches the Branded company in rehearsal

An overcast Saturday morning and I’m at Clapham Community Project, an apt rehearsal space for The Old Vic’s biggest community project to date. I come in as Branded nears the end of its second week of rehearsal. A full cast of almost 50 are warming up with associate director and choreographer Aletta Collins ‘The more you stick your bum out, the better the stretch’ she decries. As I look around the room I am greeted with an assortment of different ages, backgrounds and origins, a group of people which represents the diverse community of London. Aletta then leads the cast in a meet and greet session which is remarkably relaxed considering the group have only met once before. There’s lots of laughing, joking and gentle ribbing.

On cue, director Matt Wilde breaks through the noise in a commanding voice instructing the cast to form a circle before naming each and every person from memory, which is no mean feat with a company as large as this. He then begins to explain the make-up of the day: ‘it’s a real “hotchpotch” sort of day’ he muses, ‘there may be stuff that you’re very active in and other things you may be sitting back and watching.’ Matt is a very emotive sort of director, expressive in gesture and passionate about what he does. He commands a great deal of respect, whilst remaining friendly and caring towards every member of the company.

Page 6: BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED …oldvictheatre-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/File/1833.pdf · 2014-02-11 · CVs and headshots for all company members are available

Creating the Chinese factory is next on the agenda. Matt and Aletta work together to create the long tables that are commonplace in a factory environment. ‘Daniel come and sit on here’ Matt jokes as two of the cast balance a wooden board on their heads. I even get my chance at a starring role as I fill in carrying one of the boards.

In the green room David, Rakim, Amaka and Aaron are working with the assistant director Elgiva Field and the fight director, Matt Gardner, demonstrating once again the massive team working on the show. The scene is incredibly real in its violence and I’m amazed to see Amaka still smiling at the end of the scene. Elgiva and Matt still

ask for more, telling the boys that there’s more aggression to be had, still without hurting anyone. ‘Shall I show him how to do it?’ offers Amaka, the recipient of the majority of the violence, casting aside any worries about her being hurt. ‘There’s a lot of work for Rox’ she tells me, ‘It’s quite hard to find her motivation, especially when she’s on the receiving end of so much violence, it’s difficult but good difficult!’

I leave the day’s rehearsal wanting to, as Matt Wilde so appropriately puts it, ‘take a break from the exuberance’, knowing that over the next six weeks the Branded team have a lot to achieve but I know they’ll have fun doing it.

The dancers prepare to show their work of the last two weeks. This is the first time the rest of the company have seen what they’ve been working meticulously on every evening for the last fortnight. ‘This is very much a kind of work in progress,’ says Matt ‘This is the kind of stylistic movement that will appear throughout the piece.’ He then

goes on to describe the opening of the show, flanked by the dancers, led by performer and associate choreographer Aline David, ‘Just look sexy, which you all do effortlessly anyway’ instructs Matt as the dancers begin.

The dance routine ends with actor Tam Williams’ declaration that ‘shoes are not natural!’ Tam plays the director of the fictional Treads as if he has been rehearsing for months. ‘He’s for real. To begin with I didn’t believe he believed in what he was saying, but having looked at all the material and having talked to Matt about the character – it’s his mantra, he totally believes it!’ he explains to me. Tam has graced The Old Vic stage before, appearing in Twelfth Night with Propeller last year. His experience and maturity are of great value to the company.

‘Music!’ says Matt at the end of the speech, causing Tam to burst into spontaneous dance mirroring the earlier routine which triggers much laughter. It seems important to me that this overtone of fun and humour is apparent in a project such as this, with a real community feel beginning to form, even at this early stage. As one of the cast tells me later in the day, ‘There’s a nice atmosphere in here, everyone’s getting to know

each other.’ Back in the rehearsal space Aaron, David, Rakim and Amaka treat us to a breakdown of London youth using Simon Bent’s skilful script. They give a great early rehearsed reading of the dialogue, with the subtle comic timing beginning to emerge along with the bravado and slapstick that make up the scene.

As I sit reflecting on what I’d seen, a sudden shadow flashes over my head as Robin lands with a thud in the space. His interesting method of entering earns an approving round of applause from the assembled throng. It encapsulates their enthusiasm and their want to enjoy and push themselves.

The cast are called back to the space and immediately come alive. I can’t help but be inspired when I see 50 such committed and excited people working so well together.

They begin building a wall from a number of large wooden boards under the direction of Aletta. Everyone is hugely professional and eager; watching people meet one minute, then work together and create the movement of the piece the next, is simply extraordinary.

It’s obvious that friendships and working relationships are being formed. ‘You look like you’re all bonding very well’ says Aletta as she brings the group back to focus. They experiment with different methods of manipulating the boards, which Aletta describes as ‘working on the “ooh” factor!’

Branded is the cUlmination oF a mUch larGer proJect called Go For Green as steVen Winter, the old Vic's edUcation & commUnity manaGer, and prodUcer oF Branded, explains.

a project

a

project

So how do you get people to begin thinking green? That’s the challenge we set ourselves some 18 months ago when we embarked on our Go for Green project buoyed with the success of the National Lottery Award for Best Heritage Project for Somme Theatre; our biggest education and community project to date.

The whole project has been a truly collaborative experience. We began by finding the most informed people around to help us. One of the first organizations

we approached was Adventure Ecology whose educational resources harness the thrill of adventure to address global sustainability issues. They offer a range of learning opportunities that connect people with nature, inspire proactive global citizenship and make learning an adventure.

Together we created accessible ‘green’ lesson plans that toured 30 schools in London and Scotland. Two actor/facilitators worked with over 1,000 children to get them

Page 8: BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED BRANDED …oldvictheatre-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/File/1833.pdf · 2014-02-11 · CVs and headshots for all company members are available

thinking more practically about what they could do to make a difference to their world. The response from those taking part was incredible due in no small part to the genuine concerns young people have about green issues.

A film crew led by Digital Fluid followed the whole process capturing the most successful exercises for inclusion in resource packs designed to encourage further learning and participation.

Next came the creation of a play that would build on what we’d discovered in schools as well as what we’d begun learning through meetings with The Ecologist,

Greenpeace and focus groups from the local community. The turning point was finding Simon Bent, a remarkable playwright who is able to take complex issues and weave them into an accessible narrative. Before long we had the bare bones of what was to become Branded.

The success of previous projects taught us that Creative Learning projects work best when they maximise the skills of the participants. With that in mind we put out an open audition call for anyone who felt they could contribute to the production. Some 1,000 people applied, over 700 attended auditions resulting in a cast of 50 people aged 16–60 years of age all bringing very different skills to the project including physical theatre, stage fighting, dance, singing and music.

The massive logistical challenge of rehearsing a production of this nature began on 17 March at Clapham Community Project with a hugely committed cast turning up day, night and weekend to bring to life Simon Bent’s ambitious text that zips around the world addressing issues such as consumerism, global citizenship, ecology and personal responsibility.

In keeping with the themes of the production, the costumes are recycled; a process led by Junky Styling which scours charity shops and jumble sales for second hand traditional suits, deconstructing and then redesigning them into twisted tailored garments. Students from Hackney Community College came on board to design and make the garments supported by their skilled tutors. Whilst Terra Plana, an innovative company that makes a variety of sustainable products, has provided the footwear.

Production week began just a few days ago with our cast taking to the world famous Old Vic stage for the first time.

5,000 tickets have been offered free of charge and a further 5,000 schools and colleges will be encouraged to engage with the issues highlighted through the related resource pack.

So that’s how we get people to think green, we hope by the end of this performance you will be too.

Creative Learning Each main stage production is accompanied by a comprehensive series of workshops, giving students the chance to work with Old Vic actors and creative teams in their school, and perform on our stage in front of their peers. We also run educational backstage tours and offer school discounts for all of our shows.

Creative Community Creative Community projects offer people the chance to develop their creative arts skills and discover more about The Old Vic. We offer reduced rate tickets to every production as well ‘behind the scenes’ days. Every season we create a large-scale community play project which anyone is of any age or background is eligible to apply for.

New Voices ClubThe New Voices Club offers a professional development programme of workshops and masterclasses for 18 to 25 year olds who are passionate about theatre. Since its creation in 2006, the Club has supported over 5,000 young actors, directors, producers and writers in taking their first steps in the industry, and has brought over 150 shows and readings to life. THANKYOU…

Since 2004, we’ve attracted a million people through our doors. But ticket sales alone aren’t enough to pay for The Old Vic’s workbeyond producing plays. We receive no government subsidy and eachyear we need to raise £1.5 million to pay for our ambitious programmeof social entrepreneurship, the upkeep of the building and for ourcommitment to the Theatre’s ongoing financial security. The Old Victherefore relies on dedicated supporters to flourish and grow; thefinancial support of generous individuals, companies, trusts andfoundations is vital to our existence.
