It was dark at the Art Museum today, as the Bakersfield Rotary Clubvisited nine business locations of our members situated throughout the Cityof Bakersfield. The member hosted meetings are a throwback to the originalintent of Rotary, as envisioned by Paul Harris. His idea was that eachmember would host a meeting, then the next week’s meeting would rotate toanother member’s location ( ). In thismanner the members were able to advertise their product/expertise—
Highlights of the activities at each Brown Bag location are reported byone of the attending Rotarians

that he was impressed by thegenuine openness of all the attendants. The Brown BagLunches allow the Rotarians the opportunity to interactin a forum that is more personal than the usual. As far as the Turner’s ashosts they were most gracious and accommodating. We had a nice boxlunch and then toured their personal home to see the type of constructionTurner Homes can do. Very high quality construction and attention to detailwas evident.

at 12:25 pm. Richard stated that the entire building has beenin the state of renovation for the past 2years at a substantial cost — thenewsroom renovation alone cost $1.5mil. With Bakersfield adding 1,000persons each day, Richard recognizespeople are getting their news in a varietyof places such as the internet andtelevision, not just the paper anymore;therefore, it was necessary that theCalifornian change to be more competi-tive in the “news” market.
The Californian isn't giving up on the printed-paper, but it needed torevamp and get new readers. The following changes were made to improvethe paper: bigger headlines, more pictures in periphery, nugget stories orsummaries ( ) and a picture page withcaptions. The www.Bakersfield.com, on the Internet, has 120,000 subscribersproviding the paper with valuable feedback on what articles are read, whatvideos are downloaded etc.
Credibility of reporters is extremely important; due to a recent pastexperience with an unethical reporter, the Californian verifies reporter'sacademic and work references, does a thorough

Our reporter, , no stranger to the medical profession andall of its peculiarities reports with fervor on those medical digs of Rotarian
Here is Bernie’s un-edited report of a sensationalBrown Bag adventure:
Those Rotarians who had the pleasure ofvisiting Comprehensive Blood & Cancer Center, through the generosity of Dr. MadanMukhopadhyay, came away dazzled and proudof the level of medical care Bakersfield provides. We also had an outstanding meal from Caf Medto sustain us for the afternoon!
led the flag salute, and attempted tolead us in song. Because Madan had so much to share, he found he couldtalk faster in Bengali, so , who is also fluent in this language, provided the interpretation for the rest of us.
CBCC has all the supportive medical means under one roof to avoidhaving to travel out of the area for cancer care. While primarily a treatmentcenter, the main focus is chemotherapy and radiation therapy providedthrough such state-of-the-art equipment as a PET CT, MRI, CT Scan, linearaccelerators, and nuclear medicine. Of course, it is the people who make thedifference, and 213 employees and 16 physicians provide the “TLC” to the400 patients seen each day.
CBCC has more than doubled its space recently, to 65,000 square feet, adding pain management and a soon-to-be-opened surgical center.
Madan had Lynda Beaton, CEO, and Pradip Shah, CFO assist in thepresentation and tour of the facility. Those of you who missed this fascinatingtour need to remember to schedule your next “Brown Bag Lunch” at CBCC.But be sure to have there to interpret!
