January 2016 Month End Mail Out 17
With an increasing number of Saskatchewan students picking up the bow and participating in the sport of archery, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is adapting its National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).
The SWF has been running the NASP program in Saskatchewan for over eight years, and since 2012, the Provincial tournament has doubled in attendance, with over 700 students participating in 2015.
“In order to better accommodate the growing number of participants, we’re hosting two provincial tournaments this year,” says Education Program Coordinator, Laurel Waldner. “We couldn’t be more excited about offering an expanded program to our students. Having two tournaments, one in the North and one in the South, allows more archers to compete without having to worry about travel and costs.”
Tournament attendance isn’t all that’s growing for the SWF’s NASP program.
As the Education programming continues to grow, the SWF welcomes a new NASP Coordinator, Doug Gibson, to the team this month. Gibson, who is no stranger to archery in the province, will work closely with Laurel Waldner as he manages the NASP program and the over 200 schools and approximately 20,000 students involved in the program. As the NASP coordinator for the Regina Public School Board and a trained archery instructor with a passion for the outdoors, Gibson is a welcome addition to the SWF.
As for the Provincial tournament, the 2017 plan will see the transition of the North and South tournaments into regionals, with the return to one cumulative Provincial event. As in past years, Saskatchewan will proudly send many competitors onto Nationals, and on to join the Canadian All Star team as they compete on the international stage at the World Championships.
“We are proud of the success that NASP has had in Saskatchewan schools,” says Waldner “and we want to showcase the talent of our provincial archers and to support more students as they become involved in the sport.”
