One State, One Children’s Book” program.” According to a press re- lease, “The Library of Michigan operates the original ‘Michigan Reads!’ program. It is devoted to increasing early childhood literacy and prereading readiness. Programming, events and author visits are scheduled throughout the state in September and October 2013, with the program launch on Sept. 9 at the East Lansing Public Library to mark the Inter- national Literacy Day.” Helakoski visited the Coldwater branch of the Branch District Library earlier this week. First, second and third grade students from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School attended. Helakoski said, “I was heavily influenced by the books that were read to me when I was young. I still am. Helakoski visits Coldwater Library By Christy Hart-Harris [email protected] COLDWATER — A “cre- ative approach to garden- ing” class will be conducted by master gardener Linda Lintner at the Coldwater branch of the Branch Dis- trict Library from 6:30- 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Lintner will be present- ing information and tech- niques to garden enthu- siasts on decorating a unique garden. Lintner has been gar- dening since she moved to Coldwater in the late 1970s. It was then that she began preparing her acre plot to be full of colorful flowers, plants and other decor. She joined the Garden Club at the urge of her dear friend, Connie Shaw. “She was like a men- tor to me and a wonderful friend,” said Lintner. Lintner is also a member of the Herb Club. She chooses to use hu- mor in her work, with her many unique and creative gardening techniques. “It’s fun to look at it with humor,” said Lintner. COLDWATER — Low-ell Thomas made it easy for Michigan State Police (MSP) when they came to investigate the break in at his North Briggs Road home last Thursday.
Thomas had Brandon
Burlew, 19, Matthew Wil-liams, 19, and his wife, Shawanna Williams, 18, in
custody in his car when they arrived, according to the prob-able cause a! davit.
Thomas had come home in the af-ternoon to check his mail and found a vehicle there
where the trio had placed a number of appliances tak-en from the home.
Matthew Williams and Burlew were taken into custody. The wife was al-lowed to leave because she had their small child with them during the crime. She was arrested at the courthouse Friday
afternoon when she ap-peared to see the other two at video arraignment.
The two men were charged with second-de-gree home invasion and conspiracy to commit the crime — both 15-year fel-onies. Shawanna was

COLDWATER — A “cre-ative approach to garden-ing” class will be conducted by master gardener Linda Lintner at the Coldwater branch of the Branch Dis-trict Library from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.
Lintner will be present-ing information and tech-niques to garden enthu-siasts on decorating a unique garden.
Lintner has been gar-dening since she moved to Coldwater in the late 1970s. It was then that she began preparing her acre plot to be full of colorful fl owers, plants and other decor.
She joined the Garden Club at the urge of her dear friend, Connie Shaw.
“She was like a men-tor to me and a wonderful friend,” said Lintner.
Lintner is also a member of the Herb Club.
She chooses to use hu-mor in her work, with her many unique and creative gardening techniques.
“It’s fun to look at it with humor,” said Lintner.

UNION TOWNSHIP — Two fi res gutted a pair of homes at opposite ends of Branch County Tuesday.
The two-story farm house of Chris and Marcy Mead at 1056 Arbogast Road was gutted by fl ames Tuesday morning. Later Tuesday afternoon, an Amish bish-op saved the life of Robert Austin when he woke him from a deep sleep as fi re burned in his trailer home at 868 S. Ray Quincy Rd., just after 2 p.m. in California Township.
A man driving by the Union City residence spotted fl ames and stopped. When he found no one home, he asked the neighbor across the road to call 911. The call came in at 9:48 a.m.

COLDWATER — The Humane Society of Branch County (HSBC) has been providing animals with a second chance for over 40 years. The non-profi t and non-kill shelter takes in emaciated, neglect-ed, abused and homeless
animals every day and pro-vides them with housing, food, water and a" ection.
Board members, sta" and volunteers are work-ing diligently to provide safe housing for the ani-mals during their transi-tion from homelessness to adoption.
The HSBC grounds cur-rently has two buildings
for housing the animals. The original building, erected in 1973, has ex-tensive deterioration, and e" orts supported by the community have already made a huge di" erence in the facility’s capabilities.
