Page 1 INDEX Branch 8 Website: https://www.sirbr8.com BIG SIR COLUMN The outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) led the Branch Executive Committee (BEC) to abruptly cancel our SIR Branch 8 luncheon on March 9, and to suspend all of our activities and events through March 31, 2020. We will continue the luncheon cancellation and activity suspensions in April. This decision means we will NOT have our SIR luncheon on Monday, April 13. In addition, all branch activities will remain suspended through April 30, 2020. Governor Gavin Newsom has directed California residents to “shelter-in-place” indefinitely. Bay Area county governments have announced similar health orders. All residents have been instructed to remain at home except for trips to fulfill essential needs. As you may know, health experts have identified seniors as the high risk population for the COVID-19 virus. I encourage you to follow the guidance of public health professionals. Although we must be aware of misinformation and scams, some trusted health guidance is posted on the branch website (Sirbr8.com). Following that guidance is especially important for seniors. Eventually, we will get through this health crisis and be able to resume the activities that we all enjoy. We are hopeful that we will hold our two special events in June Ladies Day Luncheon on June 8 and the Branch 8 Barbecue on June 16. Consequently, we will continue to process signups and payments for those two events. Please check the branch website for the details and signup for these events. Our SIR Branch 8 Golf Outing, May 18-20, has been postponed for later in the year, perhaps mid or late October. During this challenging time, make sure your families and friends are safe and healthy. Let us keep in touch with each other via phone, emails, and texts. Using the SIR Branch 8 network will provide support and encouragement to all. During April, we will provide updates as dictated by public health announcements and related developments. Please monitor your email and our branch website for these updates. I look forward to the time when we can resume our luncheons, activities, and the social interaction that makes SIR Branch 8 so special. SIR Branch 8 appears on page #73 under Senior Organizations. Seven SIR Branches are listed Branch 8, of course, it is on the top of the list.

A well-deserved shout out to our new Membership Secretary Dennis Mierzwa for coming up with so many meaningful ways of recognizing Branch New members and Anniversary Members who deserve the attention he is giving to these important categories of members.

As an incentive to bring in new candidates for membership, a drawing for a free lunch will be held in January and in July for members who bring guests to meetings during the previous six months. Pick up some SIR business cards at the check-in table each month, add your name and phone number, then give them to people you meet (potential new friends) who might be interested in joining us at SIR Branch 8. Invite them to join us for lunch, just remember to advise the Attendance Secretary by the Thursday noon before our meeting.

For each new guest sponsored during the six month period, a member will have an entry in the drawing. Bring one new guest, have one chance. Bring 3 new guests, have 3 chances! And for your efforts, you do not have to be present to win. - Howard Meadow, [email protected] 415-606-5556

Assistant Webmaster: The principal job of an

Assistant Webmaster (AW) is to help keep the Activity pages up to date. The text for each page is supplied each month by an Activity Chair, and the AW copies the submission into the proper page. This is very similar to using Word and completing a Copy-Paste operation. Some activities provide pictures of members enjoying the activity, these are easily added to the page with the text. We need several AWs as there are probably 30 pages to update each month. Any necessary training will be provided, including written instructions and short demo videos as appropriate. We have a website for new AWs where they can practice until they feel confident – and messing up is irrelevant as nobody else ever sees the mistakes! To discuss just call or email me, Derek Southern: 925-253-1646 or [email protected]

Book Exchange: WE HAVE A PROBLEM!! We've lost

an Assistant Chairman and will be facing an issue of having enough books for our monthly meetings. So we are looking for a couple of people to help us out. If you are able to lift 20lbs,…you qualify! If you can transport 5-10 boxes of books in your car…you qualify. if you are willing to drive to a location to pick up the boxes of books…you won’t even have to store the boxes at your house!! Contact: Chairman: Alan Curtis, [email protected].

Badge Assistant: Assist the Attendance Secretary by

bringing and setting up the badge trays as part of our lunch-time logistics. Create, repair, and retire badges as needed. Aid the Attendance Secretary in reconciling lunch attendance via unused badges. Collect the badges and badge trays after the lunch, take them home and refile badges in the trays. Estimated 7-8 hours / month. For more information contact:Bill Peterson: 925-676-5295, [email protected]
