Bowel cancer - take the test The NHS (Leeds South and East Clinical Commissioning Group) has launched a campaign, with Leeds City Council, to raise awareness of bowel cancer, the UK’s third most common cancer.

If you are aged 60-74 you will receive a bowel cancer testing kit through the post.

If diagnosed early, research suggests over 90% of bowel cancer patients will survive the disease for more than five years.

Completing and returning the kit could save your life.

···························································································

The early signs of bowel cancer can vary and are not very clear. They can include:

a change of bowel habit (diarrhoea or constipation) for more than two weeks

bleeding from the back passage

lasting abdominal pain or an unusual lump

loss of weight or appetite

a feeling of not having emptied your bowel properly after a bowel motion.

If you have any of the above symptoms get them checked out and don’t be afraid or embarrassed to speak to your GP.

Bowel problems are very common, so it is most likely that these symptoms do not mean you have cancer.

···························································································

Information and support about cancer

If you have concerns or fears about yourself or your loved ones, get support. In many cases early diagnosis is very important.

There are a number of sources of very good information and support, including:

Meet the Baths Manager

Tracy Basu, Chief Executive, Bramley Baths

Tracy has been in post since December 2014, and it’s the best job she’s ever done! She likes the variety - meeting people and getting to know the regulars - it’s very rewarding to be doing something that so good for people in the community. There’s something very special about the beautiful Edwardian building, although opening it up at 6.30am in pitch darkness in the middle of Winter is another matter! Tracy grew up in Southampton, has lived in Leeds for more than 10 years and intends to stay here. She trained as a chartered accountant and worked in finance in health and fitness chains for 10 years. After involvement in Heart (Headingley Enterprise & Arts Centre) she wanted to work in something

else community-based, which led her to the Baths. Tracy is very aware of the benefits of the Baths for older people. She knows how people’s routines can fall away after retirement. Coming to the Baths is a brilliant way for people to meet, maintain their fitness and feel good. It’s also particularly therapeutic for many disabled people, as the water supports bodyweight so well. The Baths hosts a weekly Zumba Gold session, which, with its slower pace, is very popular with older people who all come out ‘feeling fantastic’. Tracy promises that anyone visiting the Baths will be welcomed and can have a chat about what they might like to do. As she says ‘We aim to be the friendliest baths in the UK!’ When she’s not working, Tracy spends time with her family: Angelo, Oli and their dog Fluffy Whitebones.

Silver surfing Are you baffled by computers, tablets or mobile phones? Would you like to learn new skills? AgeUK Leeds are running low and no cost 6 week courses, of 2.5 hours a week. Phone 0113 389 3000 if you would like to get on a course, or show your interest on the reply form.

Staff update Due to a planned restructure, BEA has started to appoint to some new roles. Lee Ingham has been appointed as General Manger and more recently Fran Graham (who you may know from Bramley Lawn) has been appointed as Operations Manager. Aside from the restructure, Zoe and Maureen will shortly begin to job share the post of Volunteer Coordinator for a year. A new Activities Coordinator will be appointed soon to cover. We also welcome Vicki back from maternity leave.

Design a card for BEA We would like to send a card to all new members, one year after joining, to keep in touch and to remind them of everything on offer. We welcome possible designs for the card from members. The final design is likely to be about 6 x 4 inches, on the theme of what benefits people get from involvement in BEA. Have a go - use your skills! Please send your design ideas to Rob, at the BEA office, by the end of August.

BEAtube Bramley Elderly Action now has its own YouTube channel! We will put videos on there form time to time, starting with members singing along to the Ukelele Orchestra at the 21st birthday party. Google ‘Bramley Elderly Action YouTube’ to find us.

Barrie Smith dedication The concert by the BEA singers and the Junior Choir of the church , on 28 March, was dedicated to Barrie, who had close links with both groups.

Sponsored 3 Peaks walk The fundraising team has organized a sponsored 24.5 mile walk over the Yorkshire 3 Peaks! Please let anyone know who might be interested in doing this great challenge in such a beautiful part of the world. £25.00 registration fee includes a guide, transport and refreshments on the day. Contact the BEA office for registration forms. Saturday 26 September

Bramley Carnival We do not know, when going to press, what is happening this year.

Mattress scam Please be aware of this scam, recently reported by one of our members. Men in a white van say they are trying to deliver a mattress and their company is about to go into liquidation. They ask for £200 for it, and perhaps accept less. But the mattress is an old one, with a new cover. This has been reported to Trading Standards who informed the police.
