The awards keep

coming for the Bridge

School family. The Illi-

nois State Board of

Education (ISBE)

recently named Bridge

School as an Illinois

Honor Roll School!

This recognition was

given by the ISBE due

to Bridge School meet-

ing the award criteria

for their “Spotlight

School” award and for

their “Academic Im-

provement” award

(see pages 10-13

for further details).

Our school is one

of only three

schools in the entire

CPS system to win two

out of the three

awards given by the

ISBE (see page 4)!

Our next big chal-

lenge comes the week

of May 2nd-6th when

our children take the

Iowa Test of Basic

Skills (ITBS). I know

that our hard work will

result in our school

continuing it’s current

success. Let’s keep up

the great work!

Congratulations to all,

Dear Parents,

The City-Wide Iowa Achievement Testing Program will begin May 2-6, 2005 at Bridge School.

The outcomes of these tests are very important to students, parents, teachers and the entire school

community. Our school has done very well in the past and we would like for our school to remain

on top! Please consider volunteering some of your time during the testing program.

The teachers need assistance in the classroom managing all aspects of testing. If you would be

interested, please contact me at 534-3533. I will provide you with a brief description of proctor

duties.

Schedule: 8:00-10:30 a.m. Daily or any part of the week

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Warren Metzdorff

Counselor

Six Hour Reading Club was a great success. 186 students from grades K-6 and 18 teachers have participated. All of them will receive free tickets to Six Flags

Great America on April 20 (Report Card Pick-Up day). Have fun!

Thank you for your participation. Ms. Baron Ms. Lewis

Some of the students in room 001 entered the Troll/Carnival ―Scooby

Doo! Super-Sleuth Writing Contest!‖ Nicholas Wdowiak was chosen

as one of the talented Runner Up Winners.

According to Betsy Howie the wit and creative ability he dis-

played through the words he put in Scooby’s mouth really made his

entry stand out. The judges selected his caption from more than

10,000 really fabulous entries. As a winner, he will receive a great

collection of Scooby Doo! Books to keep him laughing.

Congratulations on winning!

News – first bad, then good. Student e-mail accounts are on hold for the time being. Federal laws have caused most e-mail

providers to ―Dump‖ e-mail accounts for all students under the age of 13. The only way they will provide accounts for the

younger student is if parents sign up for them and provide requested pieces of information.

Because providers are attempting to avoid lawsuits, they have terminated existing student accounts and are no longer offering

these accounts. The provider that we were planning to use for our student accounts is included, in addition to most others that

were offering this service.

The ―Good News‖ is that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is aware of this and is working to provide student e-mail accounts for

their students. They will provide the protection and screening that would be necessary to protect our children from unscrupu-

lous vendors or individuals. I will keep you posted on this.

Students are now working on keyboarding skills, sometimes called ―Touch Typing‖. They will be able to learn the proper

techniques and develop skill and speed that will serve them well in the future. As adults and older students can tell you, most

people that didn’t learn to type wish they had. It is a skill that you will find useful in all walks of life and will aid you in this

technological age.

DID YOU KNOW?

Teaching Tips for Parents

Did you know that there are two basic ways to decode words? We can decode phoneti-

cally (by sounding out the words) or by sight (instantly recognizing the words).

If you would like a list of the basic primary words that should be instantly recognized in

order to read and write successfully, let us know and we will get a copy to you.

Contributed by Mrs. Loise

The Kindergarten students had

a great time during their spring

egg hunt. Mrs. McGuire’s stu-

dents (Room 003) hid candy

and plastic eggs outside the

Kindergarten door, then each

student chose a partner to help

search for treats.

No school for students on this day

On Wednesday, March 30th Bridge School in cooperation

with Mrs. Banaszak and the PTA, sponsored Family Read-

ing Night. Various eighth graders performed a puppet show

for students, teachers and their families. After the show the

PTA had their book fair open with door prizes and a visit

from Mother Goose! A big thank you to Mrs. Banaszek, the

eighth graders who presented the puppet show, and the

Bridge School PTA for a wonderful night. We are thankful

to have such wonderful people as part of our Bridge School

family. Thank

You!

On Wednesday March 30th the Bridge School

Student Council invited members of the community

to visit for Bridge School’s first ever Read to Suc-

ceed Day. People from all walks of life participated

in this event. Each class was visited by a guest and

was read a story and learned about what that guest

does for a living. Classes enjoyed asking questions

and hearing the stories. The Bridge School family

would like to thank all the participants who so gra-

ciously volunteered their time!

Guest readers from Saint Mather High

School read and talk to older students during

―Read to Succeed‖ Day.

PTA parent volunteer Mr. Bob Walsh (Clifford the big red dog) visited primary classrooms and contributed to the excitement during Spring Book Fair week.

Mrs. Jackson’s second grade

class, with assistance from stu-

dent teacher Ms. Arroyo, did a

unit on dinosaurs. Students be-

came paleontologists and stud-

ied the fossils dinosaurs left

behind! These are pictures of

their final project.

ANNUAL SPRING BOOK FAIR

Students enjoyed the “Buy one –get one free” Spring Book Fair.

Bridge School’s PTA volunteers coordinated and operated the annual Spring Book Fair during the week of March

29th-April 1st. The annual event was held in the school gym and was extremely well organized and attractively laid

out. The Spring Book Fair was a ―Buy one—get one free‖ event. The Bridge School family would like to thank all

the PTA parent volunteers who so graciously donated their time and effort toward making this event a success.

Thank You!
