et me start by explaining the photo. I amhe one in the middle and these kids are why Io what I do.

everal years ago something happened tome that changed my life forever. Let me tell ou my story.

I remember it like yesterday. It’s just an afterchool job to make my car insuranceayment…so I thought. But this job changes

my life forever!  I started teaching for K-5thrade after school program. I always plannedn studying education, but little did I know here was more in store for me. I met a littleirl named Kelley. Kelley’s mom was lookingor an after school program that would accepter. She was twelve years old and had severeutism. I had never worked with anyone withutism or had ever heard of it. I fell in love

with her. I loved the challenge of trying toeach her and communicate with her. Afterworking with her and six other children witheurobehavioral disorders, I decided to study pecial education.

As I began college, I decided that one day Iwant to see children walk in with autism andwalk out typical.  My journey began. Afterompleting my degree, I began working forayette County schools. I moved to Fayette

County because they were developing arogram that was “cutting edge” for kids withutism spectrum disorders and I would have a

hance to participate in helping develop therogram.

taught a self-contained classroom that hadhildren with severe autism. I had the help of our para-professionals and a county officessistant. Most of my students were boys. Therogram was designed to decrease

nappropriate behaviors and increaseommunication. We wore arm pads, baseballsaps, and gloves. I spent years getting my hands cared from finger nails, and many days feeling ke we were in a war zone. We had an

ncredible team and I loved working with theids and their families!

One boy in particular had been aggressiveowards me and my staff an average of 16mes a day. I began to wonder if anyone could elp him!

ummer break came, and we were all relieved. We set out a plan for this child’s return in theall, but……

When he returned there was no aggression. He worked hard and made requestsndependently. He followed directions for the

rst time and showed limited obsessiveompulsive behavior. It was like he was a

“Why I Still Do What I Do!” different child.

I called his mom and asked her, “Did youguys change medicines?” She said, “No, we aretaking him to Brain Balance.” Six monthslater, this student was on no medications and

was still thriving in school. I could not believe it!

The change in that child motivated me toattend a free lecture at Brain Balance. Aftersitting through the presentation and learningthe science behind the program I knew I

wanted to work for them. Today, as directorof Brain Balance in Peachtree City, I seechildren go up two and three grade levels andfinally pass their CRCT’s for the very firsttime. I see incredible changes in behavior. Isee children with Aspergers Syndrome know

what its like to have a friend for the very first

time. And I see children with autism say theirfirst word, and then sentences! It’s truly amazing and rewarding.

Here’s what some parents say:

“As a parent and educator: My son was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and had academic delays in Math Reasoning, WrittenExpression, and Reading Comprehension. After attending three months of the program, my son’s academics increased significantly and when I received the CRCT report, he had passed all areas for the first time and was ranked in the top 3% for mathematics! I attribute this success solely to Brain Balance! Our home life is filled with  joy, because my son is not struggling to get his homework completed each evening!”   -P.G.

“After attending three months of Brain Balance,my son’s in-school suspension time decreased by 70%. He finished his eighth grade year at school which was a first in several years! He is happy

and calm! Brain Balance truly made our home more peaceful. He is a completely different child

than when he starting the program. Whatoffer to kids and their families is priceles C.M.

“When my son entered Pre-Brain Balance heonly speaking 9 spontaneous words. After months he was speaking 96 spontaneous wand at 6 months he was speaking spontaneous words. We are now experiencingspeaking in sentences!” -C.P.

“My son, who is four years old, was labeled a Pervasive Developmental Delay and developmentally below two years old in mareas. He had severe fine motor issues as weautistic tendencies. After three months  programming he is currently functioning athe board as a three old. We are continuing  programming and at school the other dayteacher commented on how well he is doing,

that he blends in with all the other childre T.W.

“Our 8 yr old son was diagnosed with PD NOS. After only six months of programmour son’s academic and social skills improved dramatically. Brain Balance has gus and our son the opportunity to do every ordinary things that we couldn’t do before, we will be forever grateful.” -A.W.
