Academy Urges US Members to Invest in their Profession During BrainPAC Month Continued from cover BrainPAC," said Anna D. Hohler, MD, FAAN, chair of the BrainPAC Executive Committee. "We are no longer content to sit idly by as decisions affecting our livelihood and our patients are made for us by those with little familiarity with our profession and our purpose." The AAN launched BrainPAC in 2007 because it knew that to effectively make the case for its members and their patients, it would · need to form a PAC that would give leverage with the senators and representatives who could help neurology. "Our role is to educate politicians about the plight of our patients and to provide them with ideas about improving neurologic health care for tomorrow," said Hohler. "With BrainPAC, we have the access to provide th em with ta ngible data and personal experience to allow them to understand the consequences of their decisions." Now, as members continue to face economic uncertainty due to the rapidly changing health care field, threats to Medicare payment, and overall declining reimbursement, support for BrainPAC is all the more crucial. BrainPAC hopes to raise $40,000 in September to add to the more than $160,000 already raised this year. BrainPAC had its best year in 2010, raising $195,844 from 853 supporters. Of the nearly 100 federal candidates Brain PAC supported in the 2010 election, 91 percent won. The Academy ranks in the top 20 in fundraising among leading physician association PACs. A strong, successful PAC with broad support from Academy members gives neurology a seat at the table when Congress decides on issues like fixing the SGR or properly recognizing the value of neurology. BrainPAC Helps Drive Advocacy Success The ability to connect with key lawmakers-across political parties and viewpoints-through BrainPAC enables the Academy to have an important presence in Washington. Just this past year, contributions to the Brain PAC have enabled the Academy to have an important presence in Washington. Bills were introduced in both the House and Senate to help to secure a primary care incentive bonus for neurologists. The AAN received special invitations to closed-door meetings with top staffers to discuss improvements to the flawed SGR system. The Academy continued to provide robust support for increasing NIH funding for neurological disorders research. The AAN was provided with opportunities to preview and comment on legislation that would affect neurologists. The Academy was therefore able to stop a recent potentially devastating proposal to cut neuroimaging reimbursements to pay for a free trade agreement with South Korea.
