Curriculum Content
A. The Trial Manuscript and Certification (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.1: Exhibit a growing proficiency and understanding of the rules for the trial
manuscript and certification.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.1 pertaining to the trial manuscript and
certification in general.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.1 about the trial manuscript and
certification in general.
Some reminders to the students:
“Now is the time for you to prove to yourself that you mastered the rules and
obtained the knowledge presented in this course.
Remember that you will need to submit at least thirty-five FULL braille pages,
including preliminary pages, taken from a general reading book. You may add up
partial pages to equal one page, if necessary.
You will prepare your manuscript using the Perky Duck on the computer. Sending your manuscript in which was scanned and converted to braille, or was checked or proofread with a braille translation program like Braille 2000 is NOT permitted. This is a test of YOUR knowledge of the literary braille rules.
All manuscripts sent to the Library of Congress must be:
single-sided embossed form
all sprocket strips removed
pages separated and collated
remove all blank pages
not necessary, but it may be bound with a spiral binding
no thermoformed copies may be sent
send photocopies of the pages transcribed including all of the preliminary pages contained in the print copy
The photocopies will be returned along with the evaluation report and the original braille pages.”

Braille Module 70-5
B. Choosing and Formatting a Book for the Manuscript (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.2: Comprehend how to choose and format a book.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with sections 20.2-20.3 concerning choosing a book and formatting it for completion of the trail manuscript.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.2-20.3 about choosing a book and formatting it for completion of the trail manuscript.
Some reminders to the students:
“When examining book selections for your manuscript, look for simplicity, but not
so simple that you are not challenged. Remember that producing neat and accurate
braille is the first thing that should be on your mind.
The book chosen for the manuscript must contain:
a table of contents use a level of vocabulary approximately equal to a high school text
Keep in mind that the manuscript should resemble a complete braille book as closely as possible, using a 40-cell braille line and a running head. Select a good stopping point such as at the end of a paragraph when you have the required number of pages for your manuscript. You do not want any points deducted if the manuscript ends in the middle of a sentence. Do not forget the words THE END on the last page in the prescribed manner.
Remember to structure the basic braille layout of the book thoroughly prior to
transcription. Consistency throughout a braille version is very important.
Some things to look for are:
dialect special typefaces foreign words and phrases quoted material preliminary page setup
headings graphs tables
Decide and write out the structuring for each item before you start to braille.”
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-6
C. Beginning Pages (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.3: Know what to do with the beginning pages of a book.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.4 pertaining to the beginning pages of the trail manuscript.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.4 about the beginning pages of the trail manuscript.
Some reminders to the students:
“All of the following should be included in the braille transcription:
dedication
acknowledgments preface author's note foreword table of contents
introduction or prologue The exception is: none of the items discussed under 19.2(g) Cover/Jacket Material
are to be included in the manuscript.
The title page should be prepared following the instructions in Lesson 19 with each line centered. Remember the words In 1 Volume on the title page. The contents page should contain only the chapters and pages that actually appear in the thirty-five pages of the manuscript. Do not braille the entire table of contents. If applicable include a special symbols page and a transcriber's notes page. The first chapter starts on a new braille page. Remember do not divide words between lines.”
D. Accuracy, Neatness, and Erasures (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.4: Demonstrate proficiency for accuracy, neatness, and erasures.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with sections 20.5-20.6 pertaining to accuracy, neatness and
erasures.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-7
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.5-20.6 about accuracy, neatness
and erasures.
Some reminders to the students:
“Your trial manuscript will be proofread and graded by an expert in literary braille.
So, ALWAYS think of accuracy and neatness! Remember you are to have an exact
reproduction of the print text with respect to the following when your trial
manuscript is completed:
wording spelling punctuation the correct formation of braille characters the proper use of contractions
the correct application of all rules of braille transcribing the proper division of words, such as hyphenated words the use of correct braille formats
Neatness includes:
uniformly clear dots evenly spaced lines the absence of extensive or poorly made erasures
If an error has been made in page numbering, the appropriate pages must be
repeated. Manuscripts containing a repetition or omission sign will not be accepted.
When you are proofreading your manuscript, pay close attention to omission or repetition of part of the text. This is undoubtedly the most serious error that can occur because it results in material that is often incomprehensible to the reader. Guard against losing your place in the print copy. When you are interrupted or have to put your manuscript down for any reason, make sure you pick up at the same place you left off. Use some type of marker to indicate where you were. Do not allow any erasures in your manuscript. If the grader of the manuscript can
feel an erasure, it will be counted as an error. If you have an erasure make sure it
is executed properly so it will not be detected.”
E. Editing and Proofreading (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.5: Show knowledge of when you can or cannot edit the print text and about proofreading.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-8
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.7-20.8 concerning editing and proofreading
the trial manuscript.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.7-20.8 about editing and
proofreading the trial manuscript.
Some reminders to the students:
“Of utmost importance is for the transcriber to have an exact representation of the
print copy at the completion of each transcription. You are not an editor and should
not seek to substitute your judgment for that of the author as to what constitutes
correct usage. The author must be permitted to have their writings transcribed as it
was written.
However, there are occasions in print when errors do occur and the transcriber
should correct these errors, but using great discretion.
The certification manuscript should be your own work and no one elses. You are
required to proofread the entire manuscript, many times over. Some people even
adapted to proofreading their manuscript backwards! This will help you to catch
some errors when you have tired of reading it forward.
Since you will be turning in an embossed copy of your manuscript you need to proofread the embossed copy of your manuscript. There have been times when the embosser has gotten off line or another technical error was caused and the mistakes were not caught because the transcriber did not proofread the embossed copy. The grader does take points off for these errors. The transcriber is
responsible for the WHOLE production of the manuscript.
NO ONE other than you should proofread your manuscript. You were given all the tools needed to pass this trail manuscript with flying colors and be proud of yourself! This is a test of YOUR knowledge and ability, not of anyone else's
proofreading skills.”
F. A Letter to the Grader (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.6: Identify the information needed for the letter to the grader.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.9 concerning the letter to the grader.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-9
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.9 about the letter to the grader.
Some reminders to the students:
“Remember that the grader is doing their job to find every mistake in your
manuscript. They are doing this so that you will learn to produce braille that is clear
and concise for the braille reader. The letter to the grader, which will be transcribed
in braille, will be included with your manuscript.
The letter to the grader will consist of:
what dictionary was used anything unusual that was encountered in print such as format irregularities,
dialect, or unusual foreign names explanation of any editing
Remember to thank the grader for taking the time to grade your manuscript. You
will want to use full sentences and proper English to accomplish this task. Do not
hesitate to ask for help concerning the letter to the grader.”
G. Mailing the Manuscript, Grading, and Appealing the Grade (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.7: Assess how to mail the manuscript, grading, and appealing the test results.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.10-20.12 pertaining to mailing the manuscript, grading, and appealing the test results.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.10-20.12 about mailing the manuscript, grading, and appealing the test results.
Some reminders to the students:
“Remember to look on page xv of the General Course Instructions for the
instructions on mailing your manuscript to the Library of Congress.
As you know a perfect manuscript will be given a grade of 100, but it only requires
a grade of 80 for certification. A perfect manuscript is the goal, but do not despair
if you have made mistakes. As you continue your career, you will gain speed,
accuracy, and hopefully produce flawless braille transcriptions.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-10
The list in this section showed you the breakdown of points deducted. Refer back
to this list when you receive your manuscript back from the Library of Congress and
have any questions.
Remember, if the SAME error in the use or omission of contractions occurs
consistently with respect to the same word, it will be counted only once. Format
errors may sometimes be counted together as a single error, but every other error
will be counted separately.
You will have to resubmit if your score on the first manuscript was between 75 and 79. The resubmission will be twenty-five pages. Do not fret if this happens to you. This is a learning experience and we learn from mistakes. If you do not pass after the second try you will be able to try a third time. Once again, do not fret. Study
hard, apply what you learned, and you will succeed!
Please feel free to question errors marked on your manuscript that you believe
were marked incorrectly. It has happened in the past that the grader was
incorrect. If you appeal the test results you can earn your points back with the
possibility of a passing grade. The address is in the LOC Manual, if needed.”
H. Certification (15 minutes)
Objective BS70.8: Know about the certification.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20.13 concerning the students’ certification in
literary braille.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 20.13 about the students’ certification
for literary braille.
Some reminders to the students:
“WOW! Now is the time for you to be a certified braille transcriber! This is an
accomplishment that can change your life and the lives of many people.
This achievement is a huge step towards your free-world career as a braille
transcriber. Do not give up now.
There are more courses for you to study like Textbook Formatting, Music,
Proofreading, and Nemeth Math and Science. Start thinking of the direction you
want to go and focus on your goal. Go out with good skills and a good attitude!”

I. Review and Test (1.5 hours)
Objective BS70.9: Review and test on the information on the trial manuscript and certification.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 20 pertaining to the trial manuscript and
certification.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
You will need the following handouts: Lesson 20: Test (70.I.1) and Answer to Lesson
20: Test (70.I.2).
Review Lesson 20 of the LOC Manual. The review is designed to prepare the students for the test. The instructor is to go over each section with emphasis on areas that will be on the test. Allow the students to ask any questions pertaining to the context of LOC Manual: Lesson 20.
The instructor will pass out the Lesson 20: Test (70.I.1) to each student. This test consists of true or false questions. An answer key is included. Please allow time for
questions and answers.
The expected outcome of the test will help both the instructor and the students to understand the students’ strengths and weaknesses. This will allow them to work together
to strengthen the students weaknesses in any area.
ASSESSMENT
This test is necessary for the students and the instructor to determine the knowledge acquired over Lesson 20 of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing Fifth Edition, 2009. It is expected that the students will fully grasp the rules for the trial manuscript and certification.
J. Braille Bingo (1.5 hours)
Objective BS70.10: Increase speed of recall of braille symbols.
The instructor will be familiar with Lessons 20 of the LOC Manual and the instructions for
the BINGO game.
If this is the first time playing you will need to print out several copies of the BINGO
Cards and one copy of the BINGO Numbers on card stock paper (Bingo.xls). This will
allow for reuse later in the modules. Each student can use 1 or 2 cards.
You will need Braille BINGO ribbons (Module 15: 15.D.2) printed on card stock paper
for the winners.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 70 — The Trial Manuscript and Certification
Braille Module 70-12
You will need a copy of the BINGO Questions (70.J.1) for Lesson 20.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The Braille Bingo game allows the students to review the rules for this lesson. This
module covers Lesson 20. This review allows the instructor insight to see if the students
have a working knowledge of the rules.
Instructions:
Allow the students to review Lesson 20 prior to playing the game.
Pass out 1 or 2 BINGO cards to each student.
The instructor will ask the students a question from the list and the students will
raise their hand to answer the question.
o If the question is answered correctly the instructor will draw a number and call
it out.
o If the question is not answered correctly the instructor will pass to another
question and no number will be drawn.
When a student answers correctly the class may place their markers on the
appropriate space.
Whoever fills one line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally and yells “BINGO” first
will check their card with the BINGO numbers to see if they have won.
If the student has a line filled out they win.
You may have ribbons ready to pass out for the “winners."
In the wrap up, the instructor will encourage study for retention.
