Literary Lesson 18.1-18.5

Summary

Goal(s): The goal is for the students to gain an understanding of special formats: poetry, columns, tables, outlines and the

rules concerning the usages.

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

BS63.1: Identify prose and standard form

poetry.

BS63.2: Demonstrate proficiency of list

and side-by-side columns.

BS63.3: Demonstrate proficiency of tables.

BS63.4: Demonstrate proficiency of

outlines.

BS63.5: Review and test over poetry, columns, tables, and outlines.

Instructor: Braille instructor

Delivery Method(s):

Lecture Classroom reading Discussion

Take Away Message(s): Today you have studied special formats for poetry, columns, tables, and outlines. The rules of the literary code do not cover all areas of these special formats and you are referred to Braille Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription whenever needed. There will be many instances in which you will need to know how to make decisions for a braille transcription that will be understandable for the blind reader. Studying the BF Rule cross references in this literary course will give you a head start for when you are completed with the Literary course and ready to tackle textbook format.

Curriculum Content

A. Poetry (30 minutes)

Objective BS63.1: Identify prose and standard form poetry.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with section 18.1 which covers general information. They

will also know section 18.2 and BF Rule 10 about poetry, including poetry in prose form

and standard poetry format.

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 18.1 about general

information.

Some reminders to the students:

“What are some of the special items that an agency may request you to

transcribe? Answer: magazines, newsletters, catalogs, instruction manuals,

patterns, menus, recipes, playing cards, words to music, transportation

schedules, bank statements, and utility bills. Is there a set code or rule for these

items? Answer: No. What is the best preparation for these items? A sound

knowledge of the basic literary braille code and a thorough familiarity with Braille

Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription is the best preparation a

braillist can have for transcribing such materials.

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 18.2 and BF Rule 10

about poetry.

Some reminders to the students:

“Do you remember the dot formation for the line symbol? Answer: dots 345. Can the line symbol begin or end a braille line? Answer: Yes, but it may not stand alone on a line. Where would you list the use of this symbol? When this symbol is used, list it on the special symbols page.

When transcribing poetry that is printed with each poetic line starting at the left margin what cells would you start in and what would be the runover lines? Answer: Start each line in cell 1 with runover lines starting in cell 3.

Remember that when poetry shows an indented pattern, braille should follow print.

What do you do if a stanza ends on line 24 or 25 of a braille page? Answer: On the next page, start the next stanza on line three (following the running head and a blank line).

What do you do when a poem occurs in the middle of text and there is not room at the bottom of a braille page for (1) the title (if any), (2) the blank lines which must precede and follow the title, and, (3) the first two complete poetic lines of the first stanza? Answer: The entire poem should be taken to the next page.

Subsequent stanzas in a poem may be divided between braille pages, but the division should be made so that at least one ____ poetic line will appear at the bottom or at the top of the braille page. Answer: complete. Do not divide a poetic line between braille pages.

When an ellipsis indicates a missing stanza(s), it should start in cell __ and be

preceded and followed by blank lines. Answer: cell 1.”

B. Columns (30 minutes)

a check mark, in braille these bullets are ____. Answer: Ignored.

When columns are shown side by side on one print page they should be

presented in braille in the same manner ____ ____. Answer: If possible.

If there are several unrelated columns across a print page, and it is not possible

The instructor will pass out Lesson 18.1-18.5: Worksheet (63.D.1). This worksheet

contains all of the formats the students have learned in this module. An answer key is

included. Allow time to go over the worksheet and answer questions.

E. Review and Test (1.5 hours)

Objective BS63.5: Review and test over poetry, columns, tables, and outlines.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with the Lesson 18.1-18.5.

You will need copies of: Lesson 18.1-18.5: Test (63.E.1) and Answers to Lesson 18.1-18.5: Test (63.E.2).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

Review Lesson 18.1-18.5 of the LOC Manual. The review is designed to prepare the

students for the test. The instructor is to go over each section with emphases on areas

that will be on the test. Allow the students to ask any questions pertaining to the

context of LOC Manual: Lesson 18.1-18.5.

Pass out the Lesson 18.1-18.5: Test (63.E.1) to each student. This test consists of filling in the blank and True or False. An answer key is included. Allow for time to go over the test and answer questions.

The expected outcome of the test will help both the instructor and the students to

understand the students’ strengths and weaknesses. This will allow them to work

together to strengthen the students weaknesses in any area.

ASSESSMENT

This test is necessary for the students and the instructor to determine the knowledge

acquired over Lesson: 18.1-18.5 of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing Fifth

Edition, 2009. It is expected that the students will fully grasp the rules for credit lines

(attributions) and pagination.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is the line symbol, dots 345 >, not the same as a slash? It looks like one.

Answer: If the line symbol was brailled the same as a slash the braille reader would

confuse it as such. Therefore another braille symbol was devised in order to distinguish

the two.
