Curriculum Content
A. Know the Part-Word Contractions in General (1 hour)
Objective BS22.1: Know and understanding of the general rules for the part-word
contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 6.1 pertaining to the part-word contractions in
general for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing.
You will need copies of: Lesson 6: Contraction List (22.A.1), Lesson 6: Quiz
(22.A.2) and Answers to Lesson 6: Quiz (22.A.3).
You will need a copy of Lesson 6 flashcards (Les6Flashcards.docx).
You will need copies of the Proofreading Error sheet from Module 6(6.A.1).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will pass out the Lesson 6: Quiz (22.A.2). The quiz is an inquiry to the knowledge of the students prior to studying Lesson 6 in class. This quiz is to test to see if
the student has read the lesson prior to class.
The quiz contains all of the braille characters the students will learn in Lesson 6. This
includes part-word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing. The directions for the
quiz are to fill in the table with the contractions from Lesson 6.
The outcome of this quiz is to test the students of their knowledge of the new braille
characters from Lesson 6.
The instructor will use the classroom flashcards for Lesson 6. The flashcards for Lesson 6
introduces the part-word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing. Start out slowly
and pick up speed. Hold each card up and allow the students to shout out the
contractions. Then allow time for you to call on the students’ one at a time. This will help
to allow each student to test their memory.
Some reminders to the students:
“This list of contractions has no whole-word meaning. They are used as parts of words whenever the letters they represent occur.
Use the flashcards in and out of the classroom to your advantage. The flashcards
will help you to memorize the contractions quicker.”
If time permits you may also want to review the flash cards from Lesson 5.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 22 — Part-Word Contractions
Braille Module 22-5
Have the students make their flashcards for Lesson 6 using the index cards.
Continue to encourage the use of the flash cards in the class room and privately.
As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 6.1 and EBAE XII.38
about the part-word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing in general.
Some reminders to the students:
“You will still be splitting words at the end of the braille line in this lesson,
whenever possible. Therefore, pay attention to if these contractions are with or
without punctuation and use the applicable rule.”
B. Know Part-Word Contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing (1.5 hours)
Objective BS22.2: Demonstrate a growing proficiency and understanding the rules for the
part-word contractions.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with section 6.1a-g pertaining to know how to use these contractions when they fall into prefixes, suffixes, solid compound words, digraphs, diphthongs, and trigraphs, avoiding difficulty in pronunciation, consonants pronounced
separately, and numbers followed by contractions. They will also be familiar with Drill 18.
You will need copies of: Lesson 6.1: Worksheet 1 (22.B.1), Answers to Lesson 6.1: Worksheet 1 (22.B.2), Lesson 6.1: Worksheet 2 (22.B.3) and Answers to Lesson 6.1: Worksheet 2 (22.B.4).
You will need copies of the Proofreading Error sheet from Module 6(6.A.1).
Each student will need a copy of the Contraction chart. The instructor will have a copy of the Answers to the Contractions Chart (Lesson 6Contractionschart.xls).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class the students will read and discuss Lesson 6.1a-g which covers the part-word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing, concerning prefixes, suffixes, solid compound words, and digraphs (dipththongs), and trigraphs avoiding difficulty in
pronunciation, consonants pronounced separately, and numbers followed by contractions..
Take turns as a class to read the braille (embossed) answers to Drill 18 from the drill book. This will help the students to get a visual idea of reading the embossed copy.
Some reminders to the students:
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 22 — Part-Word Contractions
Braille Module 22-6
“Remember to say the character of every cell, such as punctuation marks, number indicators, blank cell, etc. This will help you to catch any mistakes. This practice will help you when you get to proofreading your manuscript.
By now you should be getting better at reading aloud. This will help you to
proofread your manuscript when you get to that point.
Take your time when you are reading. Remember to be patient and quiet whenever
someone else is reading.”
Next students will complete Drill 18 on Page 6-4 using Perky Duck.
Some reminders to the students before they transcribe drill 18:
“Always print out your Drills to proofread. Yes you can proofread on the computer,
but chances are you will not be able to catch your mistakes as fully as a print copy.
By now you have learned quite a few contractions. Use the tools you were given to find all the contractions in the text. Look up the rules whenever you have a question to see if the contraction can or cannot be used. Then mark your paper so
you don’t have to continue to questions yourself.
Remember to thoroughly structure your print copy prior to transcription. Proofread
your own work before handing it to someone else to proofread.
There is a healthy competition. So continue to challenge one other as you study. Encourage each other to memorize these contractions through the use of the
flashcards.”
When the students have completed this activity, which includes proofreading their own work, they can exchange drills and proofread each other’s work using the “How to
Successfully Proofread” steps.
The instructor will hand out the Lesson 6: Worksheet 1 (22.B.1).This worksheet was created for the students to practice their knowledge of reading 10 complete sentences in simulated braille and looking for all the contractions the student has learned up to this point. First the students will take turns reading this exercise with another student. Then they write the words out in longhand over the simulated braille. An answer key is
included.
The instructor will hand out the Lesson 6: Worksheet 2 (22.B.3). This worksheet was created for the students to search for the contractions learned in this lesson. The students will proofread each braille sentence highlight each braille cell that is incorrect. An answer key is included. Allow time to go over the worksheet and answer questions.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 22 — Part-Word Contractions
Braille Module 22-7
FOLLOW-THROUGH ACTIVITIES
The instructor will have the students bring out their copy of the Contraction Chart. The
students will fill in the boxes that pertain to the part-word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh,
ow, ble, and ing. Please allow time to go over this chart, fill in the boxes that apply, and
allow for questions/answers.
Some reminders to the students:
“Remember to fill out your Contraction Chart for this section. Today we learned
the part-word contractions ar, ed, er, gh, ow, ble, and ing. Use the “note” section
to remind yourself of the ways you can or cannot use the contraction. This will
save you valuable time when filled out correctly.
The Contraction Chart will be used throughout the braille modules as long as you
will be learning contractions. Take care of the one you have. Remember to fill it in
each time you learn new contractions.”
ASSESSMENT
Discuss the student’s response to these part-word contractions. Are they grasping the idea? Encourage the student’s to pay attention to the rules and they will begin to
comprehend how a contraction can be used in both ways, depending on the context.
