Welcome to our Degree Show 2012, the annual celebration of the talent, creativity, hard work and commitment of our

students. The range of contexts and practices facilitated in Bradford School of Arts and Media makes for vibrant and

diverse shows and, as always, we are extremely proud of the exciting, challenging and innovative work our students have

produced. We would also like to thank them for their contribution to the friendliness, collaboration and team spirit that

characterise our courses. The students have been a pleasure to work with and we would like to congratulate them all on

their endeavours and achievements and to wish them every success for the future.

Particular thanks are due to [JASIA, + ADD FIRST NAMES OF ANYBODY ELSE INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION OF CATALOGUE] for

the production of this catalogue, and to our wonderful technical and administrative staff, without whom this fabulous

event would not be possible.

Enjoy the show!

The Staff Team, BA (Hons) Art and Design and BA (Hons) Fine Art

“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes” – Andy Warhol

My key influences are popular/pop art and the medium of the comic, occasionally

with minor elements of lowbrow art. My work is always intended to be vibrant,

energetic and above all colourful. Currently my work is available through my

company: Runs with Hamsters where I create digital prints/posters and t-shirt

designs.

BA Art and Design I would best describe myself as a multi media craftsperson because I am able to manage different techniques. I use different products like glitter, colour tissue, glass paint outliner, watercolour, pencils, made for my own patterns. I enjoy experimenting with materials and processes. I am doing this because I am passionate and it allows me to experiment and explore influences from different cultures. My selection of colours and patterns have been partly influenced by Asian Indian culture, but also by traditional and modern western designs for example the shapes my work developed from flowers, 1950’s western print patterns and Indian paisley patterns and henna patterns and the selection of colours have been mixed to resemble the colours used in Asian fabrics. I decided to explore different patterns such as Damask patterns 1950s patterns, vintage, Indian paisley and floral, fabrics, techniques, motifs and designs from all over the world. I have taken traditional motif s or designs and given them a modern twist, and create fusions of East and West.

I am a process driven multimedia fine artist, currently focusing on representation in the mass media. Exploring the selectiveness and the transparencies used primarily in newspapers, but also through self publishing blogs and websites.

Fine Artist.

In my work I explore ‘Night, Darkness, Sleep and

Insomnia’ engaging the viewer with an

autobiographical approach. I display an ambiguity of

emotions through personal and cultural experiences

of night, using a mix of fear and comfort to give a

multi-layered experience. The fear of night and

darkness is juxtaposed with the comfort and

homeliness of sleep.

“The night

Hath been to me a more familiar face

Than that of man; and in her starry shade

Of dim and solitary loveliness

I learned the language of another world.“

I am a multimedia artist and my work is about the representation of

Bradford, through historical buildings where I can create sculpture

forms, through digital media, printmaking and photography.

The ‘boundaries’ of the skin which can be seen as fixed is what I have attempted to break down, by invading the internal space ,or extrude and expose structures from the inside out.

My work is about the political and cultural assumptions of skin colour and the

relationship of skin colour and the construction of identity. I aim to challenge the

viewer assumptions about my race and identity. My main influences were Cindy

Sherman and Adrian piper.

A process lead artist focusing on the overlooked by gathering and collecting found objects and materials to use in mixed media artwork. Transforming the collected by reinvesting the relationship of value and meaning.

My paintings are mainly done for decorative purposes. I think

there is already too much seriousness and controversy in the

world so artwork should be something colourful and attractive

that would make people smile by looking at it. I enjoy painting

things of beauty and enhancing things to make them look

attractive and colourful.

Much influenced by Graham Sutherland and David Hockney my prints, through my imagination, explore form, colour, scale and, hopefully, will feed your imagination.

Having spent half a century of adult life sketching buildings, landscapes and people I was informed when starting my Foundation Degree in the Creative Industries, that I would be taken out of my comfort zone. How right they were!

I was determined, however, to use as little modern technology as possible. I've almost succeeded!

The majority of my print work this year has been developed away from my original representational pen and ink drawings and more towards abstraction. This has been explored through two major themes, namely 'Observation Feeds the Imagination' and 'Medieval Buildings in Calderdale'.

At the latest stage of my ceramic work, I have created an encounter for viewers to use their hands and eyes to explore space, form and texture.

In the process of making, I have allowed the sensual feel of porcelain to dictate its form. Mainly thrown, but then hand worked, each piece has its own identity and can speak for itself. Grouping them together enables playful mood games, or interchangeable relationships.

Each of us perceives objects and experiences differently, and that is exciting to me.

“You have to find a golden path between controlling and not

controlling, between order and chaos. If there is too much

order, it’s dead. If there is too much chaos, it doesn’t cohere.

I’m continually negotiating a path between these two

extremes.”

My work examines advertising and its obsession with aspiration, desirability, commodity fetishism, the construction of male identities and the ideal male. Victorian pharmacies were businesses which sold supposed miracle potions to address public fears. These included ‘cure-alls’; a medicine to cure any ailment. There was no law for labels to declare ingredients and recovery was mainly psychosomatic. The piece aims to challenge the dependency some of us have on beauty products and the marketing ploys used to make their attributed transformative qualities seem so believable.

My work stems from my fascination with the self portrait and how

we choose to portray our own image. With the ever increasing use

of the internet, recreating or tailoring our own self image for

others to view has become common place. My aim was to capture

the visual language of the virtual world of profiling by using

photographic images combined with paint. The work is both

abstract and representational describing the blurring of reality on

the internet. The paintings are both self portraits and portraits of

everyone I encounter online.

....AND FINALLY....

We would like to express our deep gratitude and thanks to all the staff who have helped and guided us through the last few years of toil, angst and despair, chivvying us along the way and believing in us when we were filled with self-doubt. Their encouragement and support have been invaluable as has their experience and knowledge, without which we wouldn't have reached where we are today. Thanks to their input, we are leaving college very different to when we arrived. How they achieve this remains a mystery.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the technicians who we have relied on so heavily and whose future at Bradford College, at the time of writing, remains uncertain. They have worked tirelessly and patiently to ensure that we can make the best use of the facilities available to us. Without their input many of our creative ideas would not have become a reality. We are aware that their work often goes unnoticed and unappreciated, making them vulnerable in times of austerity, but they have been an essential part of our experience of Bradford College and to the success of our show.

THANK YOU!
