BPCL traces its history to1928 when the Burmah shell oil storage and distribution company of India was incorporated in England to enter the petroleum products business in India.

IN 1952 , shell and Burmah oil company set up Burmah shell refineries to set up a refinery in Mumbai.The entire operations of Burmah shell in India were nationalized on 24 Jan 1976 and the refinery and marketing companies were merged to form BPCL. Led to the formation of bharat refineries ltd. which on 1st Aug was renamed as BPCL.

The 150,000 barrels per day Kochi Refinery is a fuel based refinery producing all petroleum fuel products such as:

• Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO) for households and industrial uses • Motor Spirit (MS/ Petrol) and Hi-speed Diesel (HSD) for automobiles • Naphtha, the major raw material for fertilizer and petrochemical industries • Furnace Oil (FO), Light Diesel Oil (LDO) and Low Sulphur Heavy Stock (LSHS) as fuel for industries • Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) for aircrafts
