BP’s Disaster Response PlanBP’s Disaster Response Plan

BP’s 2009 disaster response plan lists biologist and former Florida Atlantic University and University of Miami professor Peter Lutz as the expert it would call on to monitor any impact crude oil was having on sea life. Lutz died five years ago.

BP’s Safety CitationsBP’s Safety Citations

Between June 2007 and February 2010, OSHA checked 55 oil refineries operating in the U.S. Two are owned by BP, and those racked up 760 citations for "egregiously willful" safety violations--defined as committed with plain indifference to or intentional disregard for employee safety and health.

The other 53 refineries--put together--only received one such violation.

ENFORCEMENT IS ON THE RISEENFORCEMENT IS ON THE RISE

• President Obama’s Budget proposal:• $69 million increase for worker protection programs• Hire about 177 new inspectors and investigators

• Labor Secretary, Hilda Solis:“There is a new Sheriff in town... Make no mistake about it, the DOL is back in the enforcement business”

“OSHA received over 100 inspectors in our 2010 budget, as well as an additional 25 requested in 2011. We are also moving 35 inspectors from compliance assistance activities to enforcement.”
