Liebherr has been manufacturing hydraulic components at the Bulle site in Switzerland for more than 30 years. Essen-tially, these include axial piston pumps and motors in swash plate design. However, a range of pilot control devices and valves are also produced. Development and production of the components is supported by decades of experience and state-of-the-art tech-nologies. The use of high strength materials and a durable design for high-pressure applications make the Liebherr hydraulic components suitable for the high quality expectations in cranes, construction machines, mining equipment, maritime use and other applications. They are also distinguished by a long service life, optimised efficiency and low noise emissions during operation. In order to meet the requirements of every customer optimally, the components can be put together flexibly and indi-vidually thanks to modular systems. Furthermore, the product range offers various application-specific developments.

Assembly

Specially constructed mounting equipment enables fast, effective work under ergonomic conditions.

Liebherr has always attached great importance to a high level of vertical integra-tion in the group of companies. This also applies to the components division. As such, many parts that are decisive for the quality and performance are produced for the axial piston units inhouse at the Bulle site in Switzerland. To ensure a con-sistently high level of quality and reliability of the high precision hydraulic com-ponents, Liebherr constantly improves all production processes and continually invests in the most advanced manufacturing facilities.

Manufacturing depth

The inhouse production of quality-relevant parts makes qualitatively high-grade products possible. For example, the drive shafts and cylinders of the axial piston units are made on Liebherr's own tooth cutting machines.

State-of-the-art facilities

State of the art production facilities allow for a high standard of precision and consistency of the finished workpieces and facilitate economical manufacture of small and large batch sizes. In addition, they enable short reaction times when customer requirements change.

Production

Mastering critical production processes is decisive for the quality and long service life of a component. Therefore, Liebherr machines the cast housings and connecting plates completely inhouse.

Maximum flexibility and modularity

Modular controller system

All of the different rated units can be equipped as an option with a variety of controllers, such as electric-proportional, diesel speed-dependent controllers or torque controllers.

The axial piston units from Liebherr have a swash plate design and are available in a wide range of variants. The product portfolio comprises pumps and motors both for open as well as closed hydraulic circuits. Moreover, Liebherr offers not only adjustable hydraulic pumps and motors but also fixed ones. The pumps can be designed as single, double or parallel pumps, the motors as single or double motors.A modular system of controllers, through-drives and mounting flanges means that hydraulic pumps and motors from Liebherr are particularly flexible and ver-satile. As such, the optimal solution can be found for every drive application.

Modular controller system

All of the different rated units can be equipped as an op-tion with varying controllers, such as electric-proportion-al, with pressure cut-off, diesel speed-dependent con-trollers or torque controllers. Safety valves with a seat valve design can cut-off the control pressure and, in this way, bring the axial piston unit into a neutral position again.

Standardised mounting flanges

The various mounting flanges in standard sizes that com-ply with SAE and ISO simplify integration of the compo-nents in the end unit. Furthermore, they enable a flexible combination of hydraulic pumps and splitter boxes or hydraulic motors and gearboxes.

Modular through-drive system

The modular system of through-drives is facilitated by a common drive design, standard flanges and coupling sleeves. In this way, a hydraulic pump can be connected easily to other units with maximum equivalent nominal size.

Analyses with FEM

Using the finite element method (FEM), ideal rigidity, optimal distribution of stress, ideal material distribution and improved geometry can be achieved. Analyses with FEM are carried out on the cylinders, for example.

3D measuring devices

The measurement of individual parts and assembled components is carried out using modern, computer-assisted test equipment.

Long service lifeThe foundation for the quality and performance of Liebherr hydraulic compo-nents is laid already during product development. The combination of proven design features and innovative ideas leads to products with a long service life.

Systematic simulation

The use of modern CAD software and FEM analysis for the simulation leads to components that are designed optimally. To verify and improve the computing models employed, new products are also examined in the labo-ratory and subjected to various test routines. An example of this are the high pressure endurance trials. Parts that need to withstand arduous operating conditions, such as pistons, piston-slipper assemblies and other drive sys-tem elements, are examined particularly intensively and optimised to maximise the service life of the different components overall.

Precision and accuracy

A close working relationship between the departments, such as development, work preparation, production and quality assurance guarantees high precision compo-nents that are made consistently to the same high stand-ards. Modern production facilities that can be used to produce highly complex parts only in just a few clamping operations also contribute to a high standard of quality.

Quality assurance

Modern quality assurance measures and state-of-the-art measuring equipment ensure early detection of faults during the whole production and assembly process, thereby keeping failure rates low. Without exception, every axial piston unit is subjected to a functional test before delivery during which, among other things, the torque and efficiency are checked. Only absolutely flaw-less components leave the factory.

Highest quality standards

The quality assurance procedure at the Bulle site is cer-tified according to DIN EN ISO 9001/2008 and is per-formed as per VDA standards (reliability control system).

Engineering

Using up-to-date CAD programs, the hydraulic components are developed, tested virtually in simulation programs and then prepared for series production.

The comprehensive acoustic intensity measurements enable the precise localisation of noise. Opti-misation measures are simplified by pinpointing the source of noise.

During development and construction of the axial piston pumps and motors, Liebherr places specific importance not only on performance, efficiency and lon-gevity but also on the optimisation of noise emissions in particular. The aim is to minimise the sound generated by pressure pulsations as far as possible and to minimize the emitted airborne noise from the housing. To achieve this, Liebherr relies on the knowledge gained through research and measurements and trials on its own acoustic test bench.

Optimal design Noise emissions are reduced considerably by the sturdy, enclosed housings with integrated swivel joke bearing as well as the reinforced SAE connecting flanges. Special ribs on the inside of the housing walls also ensure that the hydraulic components run more smoothly and with less noise. In addition, the ribs result in a significantly lower weight and higher stiffness.

Good vibration characteristics

With the finite element method (FEM), load distribution within the components can be determined and areas that are subjected to particularly high loads can be identified. It is also possible to calculate the vibration characteris-tics of a pump or a motor and to optimise the shape and structure of the housing using the results. The increased stiffness of the housing has a positive effect on the noise behaviour. Vibrations are minimised and material fatigue is kept as low as possible.

Acoustic test bench

Noise measurements are performed in a sound-insulated chamber. The high quality measuring technology makes it possible to record component vibrations in various types of media (air-borne, water-borne, structure-borne noise) and highlights opti-misation potential.

Optimised efficiency

CFD simulation

With the aid of flow simulations, pressure losses are minimised and flow configuration in the axial piston units is optimised.

For the latest generation of axial piston units (model series D), Liebherr offers a swash plate angle increase from 14.5 degrees to 22 degrees compared with the first generation (model series A). On one hand, a higher swash plate angle increases the conversion range of the motors, which is advantageous on mobile vehicles, for example, and in closed hydraulic circuits. On the other hand, the higher swash plate angle enhances the operating range in which the pumps and motors operate with a high level of efficiency.

High power density The high power density of the axial piston units from Liebherr results from the high swash plate angle, the compact rotating group and the high pressure level rated at up to 450 bar nominal pressure. Thanks to the high power density, smaller nominal compo-nent sizes can often be used with the same output.

Optimised flowcharacteristics

Thanks to the use of modern flow simulation software (CFD) and various measurements, pressure losses in the flow channel layout are minimised and the flow charac-teristics are improved. An optimal design of control plate and actuation geometry, configured to the operating range, minimizes pressure pulsations.

High dynamics The high control dynamics of the latest generation of Liebherr axial piston units (model series D) are made possible by a piloted adjustment, i.e. the positioning pis-ton is actuated via a pilot valve and feedback from the swivel joke comes via the feedback piston according to the amount of travel. The advantages of this type of set-ting are a high stiffness and a precise volume flow or swash plate angle adjustment.

Wide operating range

Efficiency measurements reveal not only high peak values but also very good values across a wide operating range. This enables efficient use in a variety of applications.

Two parallel pumps and one splitter box have been inte-grated in one housing in this unit. The two pumps in an open circuit can be supple-mented with an additional pump on the third output.

Application-specific developments

DMVA double motor

The double motor with narrow design is distinguished by a high power density and can be operated at higher speeds than an equivalent motor with corre-sponding size.

Liebherr understands the challenges involved in the construction and layout of complex systems. Due to the diverse range of machines and end devices in the company's product portfolio, Liebherr has a great deal of application experience, which is used to good effect in new and further developments.

With a product portfolio that is unique in the market, consisting of diesel engines, splitter boxes, hydraulic pumps and motors as well as planetary gearboxes and rope winches, Liebherr also has extensive system expertise in this area. For the customer this means that components are adapted optimally to each other with a range of integrated functions, optimal use of installation space and a high power density of the units.

Integrated functions

Thanks to optimal harmonisation between splitter box and hydraulic pump or ideal adaptation of hydraulic mo-tor and gearbox, not only is there an increase in perfor-mance and operating comfort but functions can also be integrated in the components in a space-saving manner. One such an example are the CMVE motors that feature an integrated brake valve as well as an integrated hold-ing brake and regulation and can be installed as plug-in motors in a Liebherr travel drive.

Small installation dimensions

For particularly intensive exploitation of the installation space, several functions can be engineered together as one unit. With the DPVP hydraulic double pump, for example, one gearbox was integrated that replaces a separate splitter box, thereby making a very short instal-lation length possible. The gearbox, which is driven by a separate oil circuit, allows high speeds thanks to an ideal transmission ratio. The component has an overall maxi-mum efficiency with minimum installation space and is considerably cheaper than individual components.

High power density The DMVA double motor comprises two rotating groups in one housing whose power output accumulates. The rotating group with a smaller diameter permits a higher speed than an equivalent single motor with correspond-ing size and thereby also a higher power output.

CMVE plug-in motor

To make best use of the instal-lation space, the brake valve, multi-disc holding brake and the regulation have been integrated in the CMVE motors.

Open circuitThe axial piston pumps DPVO, DPVD and DPVP are designed for hydrostatic open circuit drives. The flow volume is proportional to the drive speed and the dis-placement volume. The volumetric flow can be varied steplessly by altering the angle of the swashplate.

Closed circuitDPVG axial piston pumps are designed for closed circuithydrostatic drives. The flow volume is proportional to thedrive speed and displacement volume. The volumetric flow can be varied steplessly by altering the angle of the swashplate. As the swash plate begins to pivot more, the volume flow increases from zero up to the maximum value. Two high pressure relief and feed valves protect the pump and motor and are integrated directly in the DPVG. An inte-grated pressure cut-off is available as an option.

Operating viscosityFor an optimum efficiency and operating time, we recom-mend the following optimal operating viscosity (depend-ing on circuit resp. operating temperature) νopt = 16 ... 36 mm²/s

Viscosity limitsThe maximum pressure fluid temperature of 115°C must not be exceeded even locally, i.e. in the bearing area for example.

For threshold conditions, the following values apply:νmin = 10 mm²/s (briefly at max. perm. temp. of tmax= 115°C)νmax = 1,600 mm²/s (briefly during cold start, i.e. tmin = -25°C)

At temperatures of -25°C to -40°C, special measures are necessary. Seek advice beforehand concerning this.

Hydraulic motors

Installation positionAny position is permitted. However, an upper-mounted leakage oil connection should be chosen as a leakage oil line to the tank. The housing must be filled with the pres-sure fluid and bled before commissioning.

The Liebherr axial piston motors are engineered for swash-plate applications and are designed for hydrostatic drive systems in open and closed circuits. The motors are suit-able for mobile use. Through-drives and the attachment of holding brakes can be arranged on request.

General information

Pressure fluidWhen choosing the pressure fluids suitable for the re-spective operation, please comply with the Liebherr “Oil filling of hydraulic pumps and motors” data sheet which is available on request. If using HF pressure fluid, i.e. environmentally-friendly pressure fluid, there may be limitations regarding the de-tails provided in the technical datasheets. Operation with HFA, HFB and HFC pressure fluids requires additional special measures. When ordering, please state which pressure fluid has been used.

Operating viscosity rangeFor an optimum efficiency and operating time, we recommend the following optimal operating viscos-ity (depending on circuit resp. operating temperature) νopt = 16 ... 36 mm²/s.

Viscosity thresholdThe maximum pressure fluid temperature of 115°C must not be exceeded even locally, i.e. in the bearing area for example.

For threshold conditions, the following values apply:νmin = 10 mm²/s (briefly at max. perm. temp. of tmax= 115°C)

νmax = 1,600 mm²/s (briefly during cold start, i.e. tmin = -25°C)

At temperatures of -25°C to -40°C, special measures are necessary. Seek advice beforehand concerning this.

Pilot control devices and hydraulic valvesAs a system supplier, Liebherr develops and produces a range of pilot control de-vices and hydraulic valves to actuate the axial piston units. These are particularly sturdy, have a simple design and are tried and tested in construction machines.

Pilot control devicesThe pilot control devices offered by Liebherr operate completely mechanically. In addition to single and double pilot control devices, foot and hand-operated pilot control devices are available. The VG 6-8 manual pilot control device is a newly developed pilot control device with a housing made from aluminium. It is therefore very lightweight and enables high flow rates with a steady pressure pattern.

Hydraulic valves Liebherr develops a wide range of different valves, such as flushing valves and feed pressure valves, as well as flow regulators, non-return, pressure limiting and damper valves for Liebherr pumps and motors. The brake valve assures a controlled braking response of the end application. The DBVS22 pressure limi-ting valve and the DV25 damper valve stabilise the application during directional changes by soft braking and acceleration of the slewing mechanism.

Examples of useEarthmoving equipmentLiebherr supplies axial piston pumps and motors as well as pilot control devices and valves for various functions in earthmoving equipment like mobile and craw-ler excavators, wheel loaders, crawler tractors and loaders, and also deep foun-dation machines.
