At Magdalen Court we work hard with the parents to find every child’s passion, and in tern their gift.

We have a strong belief that every child is special and it is our job to unearth and grow that passion.

One of the great strengths of Magdalen Court is our ability to build a child ‘Self Confidence’, because

it is with that inner belief that they can fulfil their potential.

What makes us special?

Small school in ethos and values, where the school fits around the child, rather than larger

schools where the child has to fit into their school. We truly build a unique and tailored

school experience for every child.

Take part in all school life. A genuine opportunity to take part in every part of school life.

Many schools run fabulous events, where you child may be good enough to get into one. But

here at Magdalen Court they will only be limited by their desire to participate, as they can

take part in all!

Staff know your child intimately. Our small size means that every member of staff gets to

know your child intimately. We know their strengths and challenges, and are able to give

them the individual time they need to flourish.

3mths to 18+yrs. We are a through school, taking children from 3mths to 18+yrs. None of

the setbacks of changing school, a school system that takes them through to university, with

their brothers and sisters at the same school, our family school is your family to!

Extra curricula activities. We use a huge amount of Outdoor Ed. as well Drama, Music and

a mired of opportunities to take rolls of responsibilities to help build that ‘Self Confidence’

and ‘Tenacity’ so important in success beyond school.

Examination Success

Part of school life is gaining those all important certificates recognising your child's successes. We do

something special at Magdalen Court, we introduce exams early, really early, from as young as 10yrs

old. It’s all about building on success, exposure to sitting exams! and learning they can do this.

It starts with Entry level GCSE’s, then Foundation, followed by Higher. With some moving onto A

levels or BTEC’s 1 or 2 years early. We also like to spread their GCSE’s taking 10 or 11 GCSE’s in

yr11 is not a system for success. So subjects with a high practical bias like Art, Photography &

Graphics are often taken in yr9, but this is tailored to your child’s strengths and passion.

But of course we never forget that school is not only about exams, education is life long and our

greatest efforts, are to build a love of learning and a joy for attending school!

Page 4: Boys & Girls 3months 18 years - magdalencourtschool.co.uk · levels or BTEC’s 1 or 2 years early. We also like to spread their GCSE’s taking 10 or 11 GCSE’s in yr11 is not a

A Child's education is the foundation of their future life. That foundation can be more effectively laid in small

classes with individual attention and a close liaison with parents

(a report is prepared by the staff on a termly basis). In this way a

child's progress is carefully monitored and evaluated, strengths

and areas for improvement are identified and positive action is

taken.

Pastoral Care.

This is our greatest strength. The small nature of the school,

with it’s strong family ethos, pervades everything we do. We

operate an ‘Open Door Policy’ which means any child or parent

can walk into the school office and talk to a member of staff

without booking. We like to catch things before they become a

problem. Working as a team with parents, staff and children we can create wonders.

School Clubs

A wide range of clubs are on offer. Examples include: horse riding, needlework, chess, martial arts, skiing,

sailing, Ten Tors, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, Cookery, Pilates, Yoga etc.

Science

The school has a well equipped 16-point laboratory and there

is a focus on practical exploration both in the laboratory and

with fieldwork on the mature 2-acre site. Science is one of

the school's strengths and a ‘Science Day’ is promoted each

term, where pupils focus on such topics as the innovative and

exciting range of Dr. Fran Balkwill’s books, 'Amazing

Schemes within our Genes’, ‘Cell Wars’ etc.

Elocution, Drama, Dance & Music.

Elocution and Drama play an important role in the life of the school. There is a half termly and end-of-term

'Presentation' every term. This gives pupils the opportunity to gain confidence and develop the art of public

speaking. It also enables them to take part in various dramatic productions. The Theatre Arts and Creativity

are fostered in many ways. Pupils are encouraged to Write and Produce their own Scripts, Poetry, Music and

Songs. Local charity concerts and assembly performances are seen as valuable theatrical experience and are

positively encouraged. There is also a school choir

and parents are encouraged to extend our range of

choral robes. Music and movement are an integral

part of the school curriculum, and for those who

are keen there is the opportunity to attend clubs in

singing, dance, drama and gymnastics. Drama and

the Theatre Arts are also offered as GCSE and 'A'

level subjects. It is also hoped that every child will

take the opportunity of entering for the annual

Public Speaking Exams with the English Speaking

Board, Drama Grades with the Guildhall School of

Music and Drama, and Poetry Society

Examinations.

P.E. and Games

We have a wonderful Sports Hall and a new AstroTurf playing field with all-weather surface. The pupils, whatever

their ability, are encouraged to develop skills in several sports, as much for enjoyment as physical fitness. Tennis,

badminton, volleyball, athletics, cricket, basketball, tag rugby, football, netball and gymnastics are all popular.

The school enjoys the advantages of many fine sporting facilities in Exeter such as the Arena and the school

minibuses are invaluable for such trips. We have also developed close links with Exeter and Plymouth Universities

Page 5: Boys & Girls 3months 18 years - magdalencourtschool.co.uk · levels or BTEC’s 1 or 2 years early. We also like to spread their GCSE’s taking 10 or 11 GCSE’s in yr11 is not a

and St. Luke's School of Education (which is just a

few hundred yards along the road). We can use

their swimming pool. This is a great advantage and

offers the school some excellent additional sporting

facilities. Outward bound opportunities include

wall climbing, canoeing, sailing, cross country

orienteering etc. All senior pupils have the

opportunity to undertake the C.C.P.R Sports

Leaders Awards and the Amateur Athletic 5 Star

Awards are promoted along with the Netball

Association certificates, BAGA Awards and other

external certification. There is a range of

gymnastic apparatus available to encourage pupils’

personal development, confidence and co-

ordination. All pupils take part in P.E .lessons, inter-house matches and the Annual Sports Day. We also

encourage pupils to attend the weekly swimming classes and swimming galas.

Mathematics

We have a dynamic maths curriculum that builds a love of maths! Pupils work to the best of their ability to

achieve their full potential. Homework can be extended to further consolidate learning. Early GCSEs in Maths

are offered, and pupils can enter for the Great British Maths Challenge. There are several mathematics

specialists among the staff and pupils have an individual on-line Maths workbook to support daily homework

and give parents the opportunity to become involved in their children’s work.

Educational Support SEND

All pupils at some point in their education will need

some additional support. This may be short or long

term. Identifying what support they need and really

early on is key, we have a bank of highly

experienced professionals we draw upon to help us

with this and then even more importantly is

providing the effective support they need. All of our

staff are trained to provide additional support and

when a child joins us if needed we run a whole

school training session to ensure we; one understand

that child’s needs and then secondly provide the

support that is going to be most effective. We then

carefully monitor all of our children's progress

against National Standards, to measure the success of our intervention. We have a substantial amount of

knowledge and experience in supporting children with a wide variety of needs. Linking with a wide range of

charities to provide advice & financial support where needed.

Outward Bound Study Programme

The school has a comprehensive programme designed to build, extend and challenge the pupils’ broad range of

experiences. It starts with short, local and familiar activities with the younger pupils and, as their confidence,

teamwork and expertise develops, so the courses they attend grow in length,

challenge and location. The residential trips such as skiing and

adventure centres are always hugely popular with pupils and parents

alike, and, being a small school, the opportunity to partake in them all

is frequently the norm.

Homework

Prep is an integral part of the school day. This varies according

to age and can be extended to cope with very bright or gifted

children or, conversely, to help pupils who are facing academic

challenges. Prep is developed in close liaison with parents to

avoid stress, and school diaries are used to help parents monitor

their children's prep.

Page 6: Boys & Girls 3months 18 years - magdalencourtschool.co.uk · levels or BTEC’s 1 or 2 years early. We also like to spread their GCSE’s taking 10 or 11 GCSE’s in yr11 is not a

Art

This is an important aspect of the curriculum and helps to develop a

child's creative flair. Live sketching, clay, charcoal, wax rubbing

and prints are all encouraged, as is exploration with various textures

of paint & visits to a local pottery where pupils can ‘throw’ their

own mug etc. There is no lower limit on the age to open a portfolio

of work for GCSE. Artistic pupils are invited to discuss their areas of

study with the Art specialist.

Field Studies Centre

The pupils enjoy a Field Studies day each term. This can take the form of

a visit to the Willows and Wetlands Centre, or a day on Dartmoor where

they can undertake environmental studies, earth sciences etc. They gain

practical experience in field work and can use our own 50-acre field in

the Teign Valley for longer-term studies, camping expeditions, barbecues,

canoeing, exploratory river work etc. The Field Studies work is led by Mr. Jenner and Mr. Bushrod.

Hobbies

All pupils are encouraged to extend their interests. In addition to the Field Studies Centre some of the

following are be available at various times of the year: Tennis Coaching, Swimming, Riding, Art, Badminton,

Volleyball, Netball, Dance, Drama, Choir, Gym Club, BAGA Awards, Computers, Chess, Cycling Proficiency

Tests, Nursery School Classroom Assistant’s Certificate, CCPR

Sports Leaders Award, Drama Workshop Assistant, St John's

First Aid courses, the Royal Marines Commando Course and

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Computer Science

MCS Google Academic licence utilises cloud computing for

storage and applications to enable pupils to work anywhere with

any device. Pupils are encouraged to use Chromebooks in all

their lessons to support their education.

Graphic Design

This is a popular subject and helps pupils work to scale, focus on

problem solving, and develop mathematical thinking.

D&T Most pupils enjoy working with electronics, mechanisms, plastic, wood and metal thereby developing their

skills, co-ordination and appreciation of these materials and processes.

The Nursery School caters for boys and girls from babyhood. There is very close liaison with parents to ensure

that every child has a sound and supportive start.

Page 7: Boys & Girls 3months 18 years - magdalencourtschool.co.uk · levels or BTEC’s 1 or 2 years early. We also like to spread their GCSE’s taking 10 or 11 GCSE’s in yr11 is not a

Pupils are encouraged to explore and express themselves in a warm

friendly atmosphere of approval. Great effort is made to nurture their

rapport, confidence and abilities. The period between years two and seven

is considered to be the most fertile and absorbent time in children's lives.

We try to help the pupils make the greatest use of this time.

Groups are kept small and usually number between 8 and 12 children. An

early start is made with reading, basic number and literacy skills. The

children's education is carefully planned to meet individual needs.

Generally speaking the day is carefully timetabled to develop both

academic skills and practical activities. These include painting, clay,

collage, craft, singing, P.E, drama, dance and music. All of the pupils take part in the regular half term

presentations which are held in the School Hall or at St. Michael and All Angels Church. These help develop

them to develop confidence and a sense of pride.

We involve the parents in the children's work as this helps to foster and encourage clear academic development

at a pace which suits each individual child.

Each day starts with 'Show and Tell', where every child is encouraged to talk about the item which they have

brought from home. Work is collected in a folder and words in a word tin. These go to and from home on a

daily basis to enable parents to take an interest in their children's progress and to work with us. Kinderkare

Nurseries is composed of several small classes with each one a little step up the academic ladder.

Very bright pupils move into the top Nursery Form which gives them the opportunity to experience all the pre-

Preparatory School classes. Most pupils stay on to Magdalen Court Main School moving from the Nursery

School into Form 1. Here they enjoy a highly structured day with a sound traditional approach. We aim

academically high, but very gently and carefully to ensure there is no pressure. Pupils take home reading

books, simple spellings to learn, written prep and number work. The pupils also enjoy Nature Studies.

The Team of Nursery Staff all hold qualifications in ‘Child Care & Education’. There are

two Assessors in Child Care & Education, two graduate qualified teachers and two members

of the team with Montessori Diplomas.

Our highly successful and well established 6th Form

What makes our post 16 education special:

• Subjects: We endeavour to offer any combination of subjects,

bringing in the specialist teachers your child needs.

• Level of study: A Level’s, BTEC’s, Apprenticeships just like

everything at MCS, it’s about meeting the individuals needs.

• 1:1 support, the transition to 6th form is a big one, even when

you stay at the same school. Our pupils can see their tutor every

day if needed.

• Full timetable, 9am to 3:50pm, 5 days a week, we feel our

pupils are better supported with a full timetable.

• Pastoral care, synonymous with everything we do.

• Self Confidence: We place huge importance on building self-

confidence & the opportunities to do so are vast. We encourage

our 6th form pupils to get involved in all the junior activates as

leaders. There are so many they will need to be selective

• Travel: We offer a huge range of overseas & local trips every

year. We believe that travel is an education in itself.

• Duke of Edinburgh Award. We offer the full range of Bronze,

Silver & Gold DofE, but unusually don’t have a set programme, as most institutions. Giving a much

wide range of opportunities to our students.

• Responsibility: Stepping up to the mark & making a difference is so important. Well in a little school,

you can make a big difference. We encourage our students to make a difference, act out their ideas with

support from the whole school community.

• Nursery to 6th form: Having pupils in the school from 3mth to 18+ offers great opportunity for our

students. Whether this is supporting one of the sports lessons, building their Sports Leadership skills to

running a school club or organising an event to raise money for a charity.

• Expectations: From a very young age we engage our pupils in the wide range of opportunities provided

by the local universities. This frequent immersion in this environment, encourages a far higher

percentage of our pupils to follow this path, than you will find in many other post 16 settings.

Be part of our very special and very successful 6th form!
