Since our inception in August of 2001, the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Bulloch County has been in the forefront of youth development, serving as the only organization in the county extended to youth-at-risk that provides a positive setting for participants to grow academically as well as socially. The BGC recognizes and emphasizes academic enrichment, leadership development and civic engagement as the tools desperately needed for our underserved children to complete post-secondary education, obtain gainful employment and become productive members of our community. Nearly 50% of Club members achieve the A/B Honor Roll with a 99% annual graduation/promotion rate. Annually, nearly 1,000 boys and girls at risk and in need take advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County.

In a world that has never seemed more threatening and devoid of promise for a disproportionate number of America’s children, the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County provides a tangible measure of hope. The Club offers young people what they need and want most: adults who respect and listen to them; a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves; and interesting, constructive activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits.

Members of the community are invited to join the Boys & Girls Club in creating Great Futures for the youth in our community by donating directly to the club. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for individual children.

Silver Level2014 Gateway Impact Award

Over these 15 years, approximately 9,000 youth have passed through our doors and received positive guidance from caring adults. The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe, nurturing after-school and summer environment where children of hard working but economically stressed families receive not only professional academic tutoring and help with homework, but life lessons and exposure to the arts.

The Boys & Girls Club has not only been a benefit to these children, it has helped make our community stronger. Consider this, - in 2001, only 70% of Bulloch County students graduated on time. Now, 84.5% of Bulloch County students graduate on time. In 2001, the number of Bulloch County youth referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice was 326, it is now 240. The number of teen pregnancies in 2001 was 114, and this past year there were only 79. While the Club is not solely responsible for these transformations, it has played a critical role by working with community partners and implementing programs to address these major risk factors.

The Club could not have been successful over the past 15 years without the financial support of you and others in our community who genuinely care about the future of our children. Every penny donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County stays in Bulloch County.

On Thursday, May 26, 2016, we will launch our 15 Years Strong 15 Years Effective Campaign. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to support the quality programs and services provided by the Club each day. I hope you will consider helping us achieve this goal. Over the next few days, our board members may contact you to personally thank you for your continued support and discuss your 2016 investment.

We have included an envelope and pledge card with this newsletter. We encourage you to use the pre-addressed envelope to mail your contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County.

Again, thank you for supporting the Boys & Girls Club and our local children.

Respectfully,Mike JonesChief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County

Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch Receives Gateway to Impact Award

The Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County was presented the Silver level 2014 Gateway to Impact Award at the Southeast Leadership Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This award is presented by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America recognizing organizations that have exceptional increases in average daily attendance and frequency of attendance. Since the inception of the Award in 2012, The Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County has received the Gateway to Impact Award every year. This year we were 1 of 15 Clubs out of 1009 in the Southeast region to receive the Award. Through ongoing partnerships with local businesses, community leaders, grant programs, educational institutions, and other non-profit agencies the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County continues to grow and provide youth development programs to more and more children and teenagers in our community.

Timothy was chosen from all of the Youth of the Month award recipient’s for his embodiment of leadership service, academic excellence, and a healthy lifestyle. He is a 9th grader at Statesboro High School and has attended the BGC for seven years. Committed to attending College with the goal of majoring in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Timothy is a leader inside and outside of the Classroom and BGC, placing a high value on his academics as well as serving as role model. As an active member of the BGC, Timothy participates in Golf, Photo Voice, CrossFit, and helps in the cafeteria, not before using his time wisely to complete his homework. In addition, Timothy plays for the Statesboro High School Soccer team and volunteers at our local Senior Nursing Homes. Timothy’s platform as the Youth of the year is to bring awareness to young people about the dangers of underage drinking.

As the Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County Youth of the Year, Timothy traveled to Atlanta to compete at the state level for a scholarship of $5,000, and the opportunity to represent Georgia for Regional Youth of the Year and even greater scholarships. Timothy’s itinerary was filled with a variety of activities. The night of his arrival he enjoyed a pizza dinner at the Boys & Girls Club of America national headquarters, networking with the other 31 Georgia Youth of the Year candidates, and participating in a series of fun activities in preparation for the competition. The competition commenced Monday morning. At 10:45am, cool, calm and collected, Timothy presented himself to the judges and emerged twenty minutes later with his patented smile. The stress and anxiety of the competition over, Timothy and the YOY candidates enjoyed a plethora of exciting activities including a visit to the College Football Hall of Fame, a ride on the breathtaking 20 story tall SkyView Atlanta Ferris Wheel, and dinner at CNN.

The final day of the 2016 Georgia Youth of the Year Celebration and Competition culminated with Breakfast in a Senate meeting room at the State Capitol, a group picture with Governor Nathan Deal, and a tour of the State Capitol by Senator Mike Dugan and Representative Katie M. Dempsey. The day concluded at the James H “Sloppy” Floyd building with the 2016 Georgia Youth of the Year Legislative Luncheon and announcement of the 2016 Georgia Youth of the Year.

Though not selected as the Georgia Youth of the Year, the staff, board, and members of BGC are incredibly proud of Timothy for his hard work. He exemplifies the impact the Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people.

TIMOTHY CRAWFORD, the 2016 Boys & Girls Club of Bulloch County Youth of the Year (YOY), proudly represented the Boys & Girls of Bulloch County in Atlanta, Georgia, February 29 – March 2, at the 2016 Georgia Youth of the Year Celebration and Competition.

After the Library of Congress tour, members then went back to Capitol Hill. Once inside, they received a guided tour and a mini history lesson. History buffs, such as Mrs. Douglas, were really captivated by it all. Members asked questions about the statues, paintings, and rooms.

After leaving the capitol, the group then traveled to the National History Museum for a self-guided tour. One of the favorite exhibits amongst the group was the original flag that inspired the National Anthem to be written. Members were shocked at the large size of the flag and lingered to read about the history of the flag hung on the walls. At the African American exhibit, Mrs. Oglesby noticed a picture of young girls with hand chimes. She then had Kennedi take a picture in front of it so we could show our hand chime instructor Mrs. Shirley!

National Archives was up next, and we enjoyed the hands on approach of being able to touch screens and have history information appear.

Lastly, members visited the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials once again getting fun history facts from our tour guide. Members loved the nighttime view and scrambled to take pictures to send their parents.

That night, the group had dinner and enjoyed pizza, salad, and cookies! The room was filled with fun chatter about today’s activities and excitement for the upcoming White House visit the next morning.

Wednesday morning was filled with positive energy as everyone ate breakfast together and rushed to the bus eager to get to the White House! Once there, the group had to stand in line and wait. The group joked about what would happen if one person could not go in with the popular phrase “Bye Felicia!” Once inside the White House, the group took pictures and asked the Secret Service on duty questions. Gene Oglesby even got into an impromptu White House trivia game with one of the Secret Service staff members!

After leaving the White House, the members got to do some sidewalk shopping with the outdoor vendors. Headwear was the most popular purchase! Kiara, Madison, and Timothy bought the most creative pieces as their headwear doubled as a cool animal hat that also hung low to serve as mittens.

Arlington Cemetery provoked tons of questions from Timothy and Damon to Mr. Gary who also serves in the army. The members were shocked at all of the graves. Not a peep could be heard while watching the changing of the guards as everyone was so wrapped into the ritual. Bella asked, “Does anyone watch all the other graves?” which sparked up a conversation as to what the guards are truly protecting. Members gave answers such as protecting pride, honor, integrity, etc.

Once leaving, the group traveled to see the MLK Memorial in the nighttime view. The snow on the ground was an opportunity for two members, Don and Kyron, to have a mini

snowball fight with one another! Many of the members had never seen this much snow, so it was beyond exciting for them. As they walked to the memorial, many stopped and took pictures with MLK’s various quotes inscribed on the walls. It sparked up a conversation about their interpretations of the quotes among many of them.

Tuesday morning, members woke up early to share breakfast together at the hotel. They then departed for their day of touring in the D.C. Luckily, a packing checklist had been typed up prior to the trip, so all members had their

umbrellas to use as they walked in the rain. The first stop was Capitol Hill! BUT, after trekking up the hill, they found that it was closed due to the weather and would open later in the day. The tour guide found a great alternative, and the members toured the Library of Congress instead. Members were in awe of the architecture and beautifully artwork throughout the Library of Congress. They were able to view the Main Reading Room, which was also pictured in The National Treasurer movie. Via the tour guide, the group learned so many fun facts.

Once in D.C., the group checked in and then departed for dinner at the mall. Members slipped and slid traveling from the hotel to the bus as they were not accustomed to the weather in D.C. but it was all in good fun. Once inside the food court, members received their vouchers to eat at a restaurant of their choosing and then the group sat together ate, talked and laughed.
