Top 10 Reasons to Join the K of C

10. Food, Food, food! You’ll get to help prepare and serve all kinds of family meals. 9. Fraternity! You’ll join the ranks of other great guys from our parish and from all over the world, as we all grow closer to one another by drawing closer to Christ. 8. Fashionable clothing. Yes, you’ve seen us in our chapeaux and capes. Deep down, you wanted to wear them, too. Well you can! You can even get your own sword to defend truth and justice. 7. Memorable Masses. Fourth degree Knights of Columbus are regularly called upon to serve as color guard and armed escort for our local parishes’ and Cathedral’s most joyous Masses. 6. Supporting priestly vocations. 5. Support the family. Knights work to strengthen traditional family values by providing good examples to their fellow citi-zens and hosting activities that are fun for all ages. 4. Fellowship through sports. Not only do we host basketball free throw contests for young teens, we also host family golf outings. too. 3. Spreading the Good News. We’re missionaries here in our own community. Just as Christopher Columbus brought the Gospel to the New World, we try to share Jesus’ message of hope and strength with all those we meet, especially those who haven’t yet experienced the peace of Christ. 2. Yes, you’ve heard correctly, the Knights of Columbus have a great life insurance policy. But the truth is our retirement plans are even better. 1. Our membership in the Knights of Columbus gives us the opportunity to offer our lives in service to Christ and His peo-ple. If you want to give a little back to God, if you’ve been look-ing for a way to volunteer some time and talent, or if you just need an outlet for your energy, then the Knights of Columbus is for you! So talk to your local Knights, get registered, and we’ll see you at a meeting real soon! Call Dan (419-538-6438).

From the Desk of Fr. Mark

Hi to everyone. Nature or nurture? How much do genetics have to do with growing, or is it the environment that deter-mines growth? Before all you farmers start a fight over brands of seed corn to buy next year, I'm talking about being a missionary. The environment that I grew up with was in the 1960's. I remember Peace Corp and President Kennedy talking about what we could do for our country and not what our country could do for us. In my home church of St. Aloysius in Car-thagena, Ohio, I remember a stained glass window of St. Peter Claver. He was a missionary priest to the slaves in Cartha-gena, Columbia. He baptized hundreds of thousands of slaves and led them to know God. For some reason that window always stuck with me. I have a sister, Helen, who always needed watchful care. The Missionaries of the Precious Blood who staffed St. Aloysius told stories of Peru and Chile. Maybe environment helped me to be a missionary. I also believe we are born with a missionary spirit. By our baptisms, we are called to reach out to others. We are born with God's spark of love in us. God's love is so generous and outgoing. Maybe we can't help but be missionaries. Already in the book of Genesis, we are called to be our brother's keeper. With so much of our culture being for the individual, our heart calls us to be for the other. No matter if our character is made up of nurture or nature, we are missionaries. As I put this article together, "UNBOUND," the organization that talked to our parishes a couple of weeks ago, called to say that they were so pleased with our parishes for adopting 42 people to be helped. That number was beyond their expectations for two country par-ishes. The missionary spirit is unbound in our parishes. This weekend, our parishes will participate in a mission collection. Each year the diocese has a collection for a mis-sion of their choosing. Thanks to everyone who feels the call to donate to this worthy cause. Next weekend is Mission Fest at St. Michael's. This year it falls near the feast of St. Gaspar, the founder of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. With good food, games, baskets and raffles, the missionary spirit will be a joy-ful spirit. Come next weekend to the Mission Fest. I was blessed to be a foreign missionary for a few years. That spirit of loving our neighbor is also right at home within our parishes. Thanks for caring with the love of Christ. Have a very blessed weekend. Fr. Mark

Save the Date

A dance will be held on November 18, at the Knights of Co-lumbus Hall, in Kalida. It will be an opportunity to share in the joy of being God's people. It will be a joint adventure of St. Michael's and St. John's. Fr. Mark will teach square danc-ing. Young and not-so-young are invited (this 60 thing is tough. I'm having a hard time with the word that starts with an "O"). More details to follow. Fr. Mark
