ThomasA.Bowen(19161982)developedthistechniqueinGeelong,Victoria.AroundthetimefollowingWorld

WarII,hebecameinterestedinwaystoalleviatehumansufferingandbegantonoticethatcertainmovesonthe

bodyhadparticulareffects.TheBowenTechniqueisuniqueinthatitwasdevelopedwithoutitsoriginatorhaving

anyprevioustraininginanymodalityordiscipline.Infact,hefrequentlystatedthathisworkwassimplyagift

fromGod.Overaperiodofseveralyearshedevelopedthesystemasitisusedtoday.

Bowenwasextremelybusyinhisclinic,aswasverifiedbythe1975Australiangovernmentinquiryintoalternative

healthcareprofessionals.ThestudydocumentedBowenseeingsome13,000patientsperyearasassessedovera

27weekperiod.Consideringsessionsweresevendaysapartandmostpeopleneededonlytwoorthreesessions,

thatwasanamazingnumberofclientsperyear.

In1974,whileattendingaNationalHealthConferenceinAdelaide,Australia,TomBowenwasintroducedto

OsteopathandNaturalTherapist,OswaldRentsch.AlthoughRentschknewnothingofBowenswork,he

spontaneouslyaskedifhecouldtrainwithBowen.BowensubsequentlyinvitedRentschtoGeelongtostudywith

him.

DuringthenexttwoandahalfyearsRentschandhiswife,Elaine,studiedBowenstechnique,ultimatelybeing

authorisedbyBowentodocumenthiswork.Bowenhadnonotes,chartsormanualsthattheycouldcopy,butwith

thehelpofBowensreceptionist,ReneHorwood,theyproducedatruerepresentationofBowensoriginal

technique.TheythenbeganutilizingBowensmethodsintheirclinicinHamilton,Victoria,Australia.AtBowens

request,itwasnottobeuntilafterhisdeaththatOssieandElainebeganteachinghistechnique.

ThefirstseminarwasheldinPerth,Australiain1986,andby1990,theRentschswereteachingfulltime.Sincethen,theyhaveintroducedtheBowenTechniquethroughoutAustralia,NewZealand,USA,Canada,United

Kingdom,RepublicofIreland,Norway,Denmark,Austria,Germany,France,Greece,Italy,Israel,SwedenandSouth

Africa.Thenumberofnewcountriesbeingaddedtothislistisgrowingatanexcitingrate.

Practitionersacrosstheworldarenowusingthisamazinghealingmodality.Becausethistechniqueissoeffective,it

hasbeenwidelyembracedbyabroadspectrumofpeople.Healthprofessionalsareimpressedbytheeffectiveness

oftheBowensessionandthediversityofproblemsaddressedbyit.Itwassosuccessfulthatin1992,theRentsches

implementedaTeacherTrainingProgramme.

Everyyeartheirinstructorsareassessedastotheircapability,accuracyandadherencetotheformulathatbrings

success.Therearecurrently72teachersregisteredwithTheBowenTherapyAcademyofAustraliaoffering

seminarsaroundtheglobe.TheAcademyhastaughtwellover12,000studentsworldwide.Manyofthesestudents

remainactiveintheirpractice,andmanyhavebecomeAccreditedPractitioners.

Developedinthe1950sbythelateTomBoweninGeelong,Australia,TheBowenTechniqueisagentlebut

dynamicbodytherapythatistherapeuticandveryeffective.Itempowersthebodysownhealingresources,

achievingbalanceandharmony,andoftenresultsinfastandlastingrelieffrompainanddiscomfort.Thetechniqueisconsideredappropriatetouseonanyonefromnewbornstotheelderly,withanyconditionfromsportsinjuries

tochronicororganiccomplaints.

TREATMENT

Atreatmentcomprisessequencesofsmallgentlemoves,eachatspecificsitesonthebody.Thereisnoforceful

manipulation,justalightcrossfibremanoeuvringofamuscle,tendonorligament,pleasanttotherecipient.The

BowenTechniquetapsintothebodysnaturalfeedbacksystemthatmonitorsthestateofeachmuscle.Aswellas

releasinganytensionwithinthemuscles,themovesalsoworkonenergyblocks(accumulatedbyinjury,tensionor

disease),allowingincreasedenergyflowandhencehealingability.

Treatmentscanbeperformedthroughlightclothing,andsubstantialreliefisfrequentlyexperiencedafterthefirst

1or2sessions.Specifically,thekindofsymptomsthatmaybehelpedbyTheBowenTechniqueinclude:

STUDENTS
