P R I N C I P A L ’ S M E S S A G E

The School Day – students arriving before 8:25am

Teachers are required to be on duty at their schools half an hour before school work begins in the morning and 

may be required to be present, if thought necessary by the teacher in charge of the school, for half an hour after 

the dismissal of school in the afternoon. Where special circumstances arise which, in the interests of the school, 

necessitate attendance beyond these hours, the attendance of the staff may be required.  

 Our school day commences at 8:55am and as a result we can only ask staff to be on duty from 8:25am. We have 

been finding more and more students arriving at school before this time. This causes a problem as students are 

unsupervised. I assume that parents would believe that their child was supervised once they walked through the 

gates  in  the morning. As a  result of moving  the gate at  the  front of  the school we will now be able  to  tighten 

security in the mornings meaning that the gates will not be unlocked until 8:25am. I ask that you help the school 

by not sending your child before this time as they will need to sit outside the gates until they are open.  

 

If you are unable to make arrangements for your child to be supervised before this time please contact the school.  

 

Gaming Disorder

Last  year  the  World  Health  Organisation  officially  classified  Gaming  Disorder  as  an  illness. Health  concerns 

associated with gaming behaviour are not  limited  to gaming disorder,  but also  include other aspects of health 

(e.g.  insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, problems with eyesight or hearing, musculoskeletal problems, 

sleep deprivation, aggressive behaviour and depression) and psychosocial functioning. 

Studies suggest that people who partake in gaming should be alert to the amount of time they spend on gaming 

activities, particularly when it is to the exclusion of other daily activities, as well as to any changes in their physical 

or psychological health and social functioning that could be attributed to their pattern of gaming behaviour. 

 

Parent Mee ng

On Monday  3  June  the  school will  host  a mee ng  for  parents  interested  in  taking  a more  ac ve  role  in  their 

child’s educa on. We want to hear from you and we want you to be involved. We are par cularly interested in 

ge ng  parents  and  the  community  involved  in NAIDOC week  ac vi es  in Week  10  of  this  term. We  are  also 

commencing the pilot of a new community engagement partnership at the school between Police, Health, FACS 

and  community  groups  offering  a  range  of  cultural,  educa onal  and  physical  opportuni es  for  students 

disengaged with schooling. If this mee ng goes well we will make it a regular event.  

You don’t need to RSVP, just sign in at the front office and come to the staffroom. Hope to see you there.

Year 5/6 Fresh Food Discovery Excursion

Last week the class went to the Nambucca Woolworths and the V‐Wall.  

The first thing was we marked the roll and one by one got onto the bus. Mr Rushton was driving and I was 

worried for our safety. (That was a joke). 

A er that we arrived at Woolworths. The class got out and was met with the two managers, Adam and 

Nicole. They took us behind the door that only the staff go to and went upstairs to the mee ng room. We 

asked ques ons and got answers but then a er a while we split up into two. I was in Adam’s group. 

We followed Adam un l he stopped at this small table filled with carrots and pears. He gave us some sheets 

of paper for a challenge in groups of two or three. I was in a group with Finn and Levi Fuller. A er the 

challenge we went over the loading zone, then the fridges and freezers. I had my jumper on so when we 

went inside the freezing areas I wasn’t so cold.  

We hopped out of the fridge and waddled over to the sea food. Adam took a prawn and a squid that looked 

like nothing I’ve ever seen in existence. 

A er the whole tour Adam took us back upstairs to the mee ng room. The other group came in and we got 

trays of fruit. Lots of fruit. The funny thing was Johnnie and I fought over the kiwi fruit. 

We said our goodbyes to Adam and Nicole then hopped onto the bus. Mr Rushton found a spot to sit down 

and have our lunch.  

         That is what happened in my perspec ve. I enjoyed the excursion.

S C H O O L N E W S

 

 

Year 9/10 Science & Engineering Challenge

Teamwork was  the order of  the day on Wednesday 22nd May, when students  from Years 9 & 10  travelled  to 

Kempsey for the annual Science and Engineering Challenge. Moon rover vehicles, bridges and furniture building 

were  just  a  few  of  the  ac vi es  that  students  par cipated  in  over  the  course  of  the  day.  Everyone  took 

Responsibility for their challenges and demonstrated great Resilience by carrying on even though some of the 

ac vi es  were  incredibly  difficult.  Students  modelled  Respect perfectly  by  graciously  shaking  hands  and 

congratula ng other compe tors and although  they finished  towards  the bo om of  the field overall,  they s ll 

won  many  of  the  individual  challenges.    Congratula ons  to  all  involved,  and  thank  you  all  for  a  great  day!

Term 2 ‐ School Social ‐ Fundraiser for “Li le Wings”

Maths Day at UNE

On Friday the 17th of May Tori, Candi, Fletcher and Beau competed  in the New England Mathema cal Associa on, 

Year 8 Maths Day. The students excelled in the small schools compe on, placing 3rd overall. This was against a range 

of schools in both the New England and Mid North Coast Areas. Bowraville Central has con nued it's long history of 

success  in this compe on with the students not only performing academically but also demonstra ng outstanding 

a tudes and teamwork throughout the day.

Year 7 – Mandatory Technology Agriculture

Year  7  have  been  busy exploring  the  farm  this term.  Students  have  been helping  the  Year  10 agriculture  class  with establishing  their  new market  garden  area.  The  new  Mandatory Technology Syllabus aims to establish student knowledge and  skill  in  food  and  fibre produc on.  Keep  your  eyes on  the  newsle er  as  we hope  to  harvest  our  citrus this  year  and  turn  it  into jam.  Students  have  also  been happy to  learn some animal handling  skills  whilst handling  the  schools  Red Poll ca le. 

Late last term Year 6 were let

seedlings  throughout  the 

farm.

over the past fortnight.

CLO Corner

It was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves at the social last Thursday night. Thanks to SLSO, Sharon 

Atkins (DJ Shaz) for dona ng her  me, equipment and skills that not only got the students dancing but had many 

staff members up showing off their boot scoo ng style. Our great SRC and staff worked together to provide tasty 

milkshakes and sausage sandwiches and fun ac vi es. Lots of photos on our website.  

I  met  last  week  with  local  organisa ons  from  Bowraville  to  talk  about  a  start  up  grant  on  offer  from  the 

Founda on  for  Rural & Regional  Renewal  (FRRR).  The Nambucca  is  one of  5  towns  iden fied  in NSW  that  can 

apply. A group called ’Together Nambucca Valley’ has been formed and will submit the applica on. The exci ng 

thing  about  this  is  that  if  we’re  successful  with  this  applica on  and  can  show  we  are  a  cohesive  community 

working together we may then be eligible to apply for a subsequent reasonably large amount. Wish us luck!   

I am working on an event to celebrate Women’s Health next term. S ll in the early organisa on stages however I 

am planning to offer our mums and carers a day of healthy  learning and ac vi es. Healthy mums, healthy kids! 

Numbers will be limited for the event so keep a look out  in the upcoming weeks for more informa on.

Years at Bowraville Central School:   

From Kindergarten 1998 un l Year 10 2009 

Where I went/what I did when I le BCS:  

I moved to Sydney where I have been , with my fiancé for  the last 

11  years.  I  worked  in  Aged  Care  for  quite  a  few  years,  I  then 

decided  to  go  to university   where  I  completed my   Bachelor of 

Nursing. 

What I am doing now:  

I am currently working on a surgical ward as a Registered Nurse at 

St George Hospital in Sydney. I’m also con nuing my studies doing a Masters in Nursing where I am working towards 

becoming a Clinical Nurse specialising in wound care. I remain in Sydney, however I head home any chance I have. 

Memories of Bowraville Central School:  

My memories of BCS have definitely shaped who I am. I o en tell people that  there was no be er childhood like the 

one I had living and going to school at Bowraville. People are shocked when I tell them I s ll keep in touch with my 

teachers but the teachers always created such a sense of community and I always felt respected and valued. We had 

so much fun through those school years like the  me we spent at the Ag Farm, our sports carnival and how much fun 

it was to ‘cheer off’ between houses (Go Maple!), our regular socials and all our cool excursions. However my all  me 

favourite memory had  to be  the  carnival we had at  the end of  school  and  the Year 10 boys would make a Ghost 

House down in the sport store area. They used baked beans as eyes and spaghe  as intes nes! 

Interests:  

Horse riding, travelling, gardening and cooking 

Other comments:  

I don’t think I would have become the person I am today without having the community of Bowraville Central School 

throughout my childhood. I have taken so much away with me from my years there. The memories and friendships I 

gained will never be forgo en or go unappreciated.
