A new year is here and by way of SEASONS GREETINGS to each of you we announce anew addition to our family: ELIZABETH JEAN

Born: Nov. 6; 3:10 P.M.Black hair, brown eyes and atomic age energy. Seven pounds of pleasure for eachof the other members of the Gerald D. Bowlin family.

1961 has brought joys—as well as sorrows... January found us treating burns, delivering babies, (Boni and Lola had a baby girl that only lived I6 hours in spiteof all we and the Doctors could do. She was laid to rest near their little boywho lived a shorter time only Ik months earlier.)

I spent almost three weeks (in rain) sorting and moving the "Bowlin Store"(usedclothing) in Nogales from a rented house to one Ed Tinker (Our Forwarding Agent'shusband) built for us so we'd not be out rent! Wonderful people the Tinkers.Gerry spent that time taking care of our four kids plus 13 year old Leanor,(whohad been with us since the beginning of schoolT^,""running the house, office, Missionand listening to problems of neighbors and friends here in Hermosillo and doing alittle "Back Yard Clinic" work tossed in! We aren't old enough—according toMexican customs to be "patron and patrona" but seems like we are doing such workregardless of age.

February found us busy as usual: Gerry keeping things under control and me helpingDr. Stork—two babies, both boys, three days apart. One child .^7 for Leanor'smother. The other child ^3 is the second one I have delivered in the family.Bulletin writing takes hours of Gerry's time and energy and he puts it off untilthe last minute, then dedicates all his time for about a week to just that!

In March, Lola received word that her elderly aunt has passed away and she was togo get her Ik year old daughter, Lourdes, who had been raised by the aunt. I decided to go with her, to visit Guanajuato in Central Mexico, and to get the girl herein the shortest time possible and with the least expense. April and Easter—we held an all city Sunrise Service on a rock hill near ournewest "Church", La Triguera (Flour Mill) on the Nogales Highway. A new and impressive service for Mexico, one we plan to repeat yearly. The sunrise was beautifulover Lake Rodriguez.

Roof was poured on the four room boys' dorm--cement is carried up in square 5gallon cans on men's sholders. The workers remind one of ants, so many working sofast, ''fe North Americans think we have to have machinery for everything, Mexicoteaches us something nev; daily.

Gerry had to go to Nogales, a job he dislikes very much, and one he sends me to doif at all possible. He went to take a trial run in his new--to him—'59 V.W.before he left on a longer trip to Calif, and the P.B.S. Gospel'and MissionaryConvention. He spent almost two months away—speaking in the Churches before andafter the convention. '7e have been on the mission field 15 years—with no furlough,so have to dash out now and then to "repair fences."

While Gerry was gone, I re-arranged furniture to make room for a baby to be bornat our house, an un-married girl whose family had kicked her out (common in Mexico)when she became pregnant and unable to work. I delivered a boy for her, aid theystayed with us about a month.

Gerry arrived home in time to see Alex and Esther Julian off to Coahuila (Alex'shome) on vacation. As usual, vacation and business was the program and 1 am sureturned out to be more business than vacation!

The Bowlins had been invited to a young peoples camp in Saskatchewan, Canada, andaccented. Again combining business and pleasure. (Cur first time to Canada.) Thekids'had been invited to spend the summer in Calif, where they would hear and haveto talk English, nothing but English! The boys stayed with the John V/illiams andthe girls with the Burt Shaws. (Both families from the Lakewood, Long Beach, Churchof Christ, and frequent visitors to Mexico). Johnny I7illiams brought his daughter,Charlene, down to talk aid study Spanish for the summer and took all four of oursbackvith him. (I'm sure we got the better end of that swap, ^ kids for one young

-than.-we -left her—wi-th Alex-and Esthar-at hour--homfi-. _£h-e HAD, to talk, Spanishor not talkl I'm sure she talked).

The kids left on June 22 and Gerry and I left on the 30th for Canada. V.'e spoke inchurches in Colorado and spent two days with Grin and Oleta Hardenbrook at Sturgis,South Dakota on our wry to Canada. Camp lasted two v/eeks, then a short visit withthe Owen Still's (Jr.). The trip home was via Montana, Idaho and Calif, stoppingone night with my mother in Geyserville, and on south to pick up the kids, then toGerry's folks near Idylwild. All rush rush to get home and enroll Bob in SecondarySchool before August 25th.

September found Bob in Secondary School, much more expensive than primary school,we were shocked to learn! Oscar and Kathy in 6th grade, (still segregrted, boys inone room, girls in the other) and Mary in second grade, in the Benito Juarez School.Mexican Bible Seminary classes began on the 19th with Gerry teaching a 7 A. M.class twice a week. Getting "all my kids" off to school on time is presenting aproblem--and making our home "The International Hotel" into a short order joint too.

Gerry began preaching in the San Benito Church in the absence of the minister, andnew adults began attending, including Leanors folks who have been friends for years, but have never been interested in "our Church".

October was "Convention Month", first our ov/n Western Mexico Christian Conventionwas held in the first floor of the Villa se Seris building (also serves as SeminaryChapel) even tho it was not completed, no floor, no windows, etc. It was a v/onder-ful time of fellowship. The next week Gerry attended the Arizona Convention inPhoenix, then he and Alex left for the National Mexican Convention in Alex homeChurch, Rosita, Coah. in Eastern Mexico. It is alv/ays encouraging to meet withfellow Christians anywhere end especially in a so called catholic country likeMexico. They both came home feeling up-lifted. They arrived in time to be herefor the visit of the Pres. of the Board of Directors of -Vestern Mexico ChristianMission, Ben Hoff and his two son's Ben Jr. and Bill, and show them the Seminaryand Mission property and the work that is being done.

Vhile Gerry was in Coahuila we got our baby girl! Her recently widowed mothergave her to us at birth—because she knew she could not provide for her, in addition to her other three. (She washes and irons for kO cents a dozen.) She told us;"I don't want to see my baby die in her basket from hunger or cold—you can providefor her and I know I can't". Truly she loved her child enough to provide a better

^or her in the home of others.

On Nov. 20th Gerry v;as called to El Centro, Calif, to preach the funeral of hisUncle Henry Bowlin and after the service spent Thanksgiving with his parents, thenflew home to Herraosillo, from Mexicali. One hour and tv/enty minutes in place ofthe usual 12 hours driving time—and cheaper too!

Esther Julian and I were invited to prepare a Mexican dinner for the wonderfulpeople at Chandler, Arizona. We were gone 5 days, met nev/ people and saw old friendsagain. Among them the new minister at the Chandler Church, Irwin (and Irma) Son.He brought communion to me when I was in Christian Hospital with a nev/ baby--thatbaby, Kathy, is nov; 12 years old. How true are God's words, "He who has leftfather and mother for my sake....he shall receive a hundred fold..(Mark 10-29-31)We do enjoy our many "homes" among our many friends v/hom we are priviledged tovisit now and then.

December and Christmas prepere:ions, rchool and church programs and various tripsto the lawyer's office to prepare the papers for the adoption of Elizabeth Jean.Oh those two O'clock feedings! Gerry says "I can see why it is adviseable to havechildren v/hile one is young--after '+0 your eyes don't see so good at 2 A. M. !Little Becky insists on feedings every h hours, day and night, but then guess allcan't be as good as Veva—at 8 months she sleeps thru until someone gets the schoolkids up. Looks like v;e have an orphnage right in our own home, but one thing forsure—we have to put a stop to taking in kids or get a bigger house!

Christmas Eve, (Noche Bueno) here in Mexico is the big day, open house, and likethe rest of the Mexicans we had our dinner at nite. First v/e ate tamalee with ourfriends here and there, then came home to a dinner at 10 P.M. We did hold to theNorth American custom of gift opening on Christmas morning.

Bobby is now and taller than I am, in first year secondary school, serves asJunior Deacon at Church and is a first class Boy Scout Of Mexico. Just left fora camp out, near a village where everyone knows "La Doctora Americana!"

Page 4: Bowlin Gerald Geneva 1962 Mexico

Oscar 15> has been v.dth us three years aid is still interested in becoming a bigleague baseball player. He is in the 6th grade and studying harder this year;says that 5*5 and 6*5 don't look so good on diplomas, so he v/ants 8's and 9's atleast. (He is doing better, winter tri-mester grade average was 8.2) He has goneto visit his mother in Nogales, Sonera for New Years then "home" for classesagain on the 2nd. He also serves as "Junior Deacon" in the absence of adultdeacon.

Kathy our 12 year old is our "leader". She has never met anyone too big, toosmall, too old or too young for her to handle. She teaches a class of 8 to 20youngsters 2 to 7 years old each Sunday and does a good job of it. One little 3year old never says a word in Sunday School but goes home and tells her daddyword-for-word what Kathy said I Kathy is taking piano this year, loves it, playedsimple carols for us at Christmas!(She has had k months of lessons.)

Mary our 9 year old. is a second grader, is more like Bob, in that she does herhomework v/ithout having to be "made" to do it. She is beginning to do a few thingson her own--for so long she was just "Kathy's Shadow". She came to us two yearsago, to visit four days, and stayed.

ittle Becky was one month old on the 6th of December. She is, as you can see adark headed little doll. Tho she is mighty little, she has each of us pretty wellspoiled! She howls and someone jumps! No doubt she will be a pretty good kid for^the chance she has!

Gerry oversees the Mission, the Seminary work, teaches at the San Benito Missionas v/ell as the Seminary, listens, counsels and helps neighbors, friends, andChristians alike on their problems of every day living, each (fey becoming more andmore a part of the community and authority on living and v/orking in Mexico.

I hold clinic here at home one afternoon a v/eek, go when I'm called to see thosewho are unable to come to our home and gave several hundred polio shots under theauspies of the Health Department, hold village Clinics, besides overseeing therunning of the house and family, doing my part of the office work, and working inour local congregation, (mostly as chauffer!) The big thrill of the year was tosee Leanor's dad step out on Christmas eve to make the good confession. For onewho is an Indian from Central Mexico, where Catholicism has such a hold on thefamilies, the de cision was not easy, for in a sense he gave up his family, andwill be critiscized and ridiculed for turning his back on his "heritage." V/ehope to see the other members of his immediate family baptized with him.

To each of you v;e say "Thank you" for your part in keeping Western Mexico ChristianMission operating, with your offerings and gifts and your many prayers. As wenoiY enter a New Year may each of us be drawn closer to Him and be better fitted todo His work throughout the year 1962.

And, now, may our Lord watch over you and keep you while we are apart; and finallymay we meet again in the sweet by and by.

Far away from thisland "of Colfax is the townof Wishitwas, where thechurches live and grow withstrange ideas, at leastdifferent than yours and mine. Why, in Pleasant Valley Churchin Wishitwas, - if the preacherpreaches longer than twenty minuteshe has to make a report in triplicateto the Committee on Long Windedness, and if there is anything a preacherdislikes it's making reports in triplicate, because preachers never haveany carbon paper, Cohseq.uently, thesermons are all 19 minutes and 58 secondslong, on account of naturally he wantsall the time that's coming to him.

In this church, every time thedoors open the deacons are there, andthe elders too, and of all wonders, thedeacons are all there ahead of time

every Sunday! Yes sir, they have suits, and ties and they report fifteen minutes, before the service starts, and if theyarent going to be there they let thehePvd deacon knov? the day before. Now isn't this a strange church indeed?

In the congregational meeting theother day, the qualified speakers gotup one at a time and said v/hat a fine 'job the pre-'Cher was doing, what withthe church'growing so much, and whatwith the-young people being so interested,

"and on account of-the bouIs being ^von, and they called for a vote of confidence. Then all the qualified voters yoted, and each one said "Aye." PleasantValley Church each one has to have avoting license, and you get one bygiving 5^ of" your income. And thespeakers, each one have to be a, certifiedtither before he can speak put inpublic meeting. Now this practicedoesn't ge-t- the church any more .money, but it sure gets them a lot less trouble.Don.'t you wish you went to church inPleasant Valley Church in Wishitwas? <

Dear Fellow-laborers;

How long does it take to win a man to Christ in Mexico? A year? Two?Five? Ten? The man whose baptismal picture is enclosed read a portionof the Scriptures some fifteen years agoI Later he married, moved tothe city, lost contact with Christian workers 5 then some six yearsago he became acquainted with the Bowlin family. For several yearsas we cultivated his friendship he showed himself to be rebelliousif not downright antagonistic to the things of the Lord—he is anindian from a verv fanatically Catholic area in Mexico, In I96O(four years later) his eldest daughter stayed in our home and beganattending services at the local San Benito Chapel. Then last yearGeneva began picking up the younger children for Bible School; laterMama attended the -evening services and finally Don Chencho himself. And of course the inevitable results—the necessity for a decision-thank God it was FOR Christ.

Some of you may remember that Don Chencho is our builder, so aChristian bricklayer like Boni ('Boni from the Bridge')* his wife,Lola, Alex Julian, who supervises our construction projects, hiswife, Esther, and many others as well as the Bowlin Family (especially Mrs. Bowlin) had a part in winning this man to Christ.

uly as the Scriptures say, we cannot claim such and such a soulas our own, but "we are laborers together with God", and such wealso consider you as you contribute your part—your prayers and yourfunds and your encouragement via letters and visits to the field.Share with us the joys of the mission field as well—souls like DonChencho won to Christ.

In the Vineyard of the Lord,

GERALD D. BOWLIN

Because of the concern manifested in the U.S. over infiltration of Communism in some Latin-.'Vmerican countries, and particularly because of grossmisinformation and misinterpertation of Mexico's stand on communism, Ihave taken time to translate two articles which appeared in our dailynewspaper during the recent meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of American States in Punto Este, Uruguay.

"MEXICO SNOWS NER INDEPENDENCE ,

Punta del Este, Uruguay, Jan. 25-

,Mexico,'by means of the discourse pronounced by her Minister of ForeignRelations, Manuel Tello, clearly defined her position. This delegatedeGT-lared that his government maintains an attitude of absolute independencefrom doctrines foreign to those demanded by her constitution. He affirmed that the government of Mexico is not neutralist, but neither will itbe guided by foreign influences which indicate paths other than legal ones.

Ke also said that Mexico respects all the rights inherent in the natureof citizenship, such as those of liberty of free expression, liberty ofreligious belief, self-determination, etc., and, refering explicitly toCuba, he -said that that country can only begin to func-ti-on. on the__prjijici.ple_of self-determination by the people the date there are free electionsto choose her government,

Mr, Tello thus' eliminated any idea that his government will back the-communist tendencies of the'Cuban regime, but he also let all know thatit is decidedly against any idea of intervention or coersion of thatcountry which is hot countenanced by the laws (of the OAS).

"The Mexncan reds were badly hurt by the violent blow which our ForeignMinister aimed at them from Punta del Este by declaring that Mexico isthe enemy of all that smells of communism, and that the exotic theoriesimported from Eurasia are not compatible with the Organization ofAmerican States.

It hurt them so much that all the Ifexican born, Castro-brand, Russiansympathizers which have infiltrated the student, labor, government workerand political organizations received the news submissively, and have kept, not only a descreet, but an elocuent silenca.

Thus it was clearly demonstrated to all the "bearded_ones," the friends ofCastro's brand of, communism, that all theirselves in angry vocifercation was merely because of the condescendence tneMexican government grants in our country.

And while from all sides have come applause.for the stand Mexico has ^^kenin th^Confe?ence del Este, the native-born communists, the fellowtravellers, and other such predators have remained mute.

These believed that Mexico would defend the co^unist palace guard whichhas submerged Cuba in chaos, misery, and a moral economic and socialdebacle.

The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (The FRI political party now inpower-GDB) said that Mexico will act in accordance with her- traditions, and announced today that she would give a complete analysis of ChancellorTello*s message, which defined with meridian clarity that which is Mexico'strue position with relationship to the problem of Cuba.

Partido Accion Nacional (The PAM—the catholic party—GDB), which hasalways criticized everything, in this occasion kept censure to itself, andopenly eulogized Mr, Tello's discourse.

"The declaration made by Mr. Tello—said PAW—before the conference ofAmerican Ministers, contains points of great importance which come as proofof that which PAN had said respecting the true Cuban situation and the('.'.•mocratic system."

The Frente Civico Mexicano de Afirmacion Revolucionario (Another politicalparty—GDB), headed by Melchor Ortega and ex-govenor of the state of VeraCruz, lawyer Marco Antonio Muhoz said: "The declarations of our Chancellorlays before the public the thought and; sentiment of the Mexican, people andreaffirms the irrevocable position of our.country in the Organization of•American States,'by adhereing clearly and decisively to the principles andnorms of representative democracy, as defined and expressed by thepolitical philosophy of Western Civilization."

Dear Friends:

Next Monday a week of Special Meetings are to be begin, but first I mightmention that our local(6 congregations) Vacation Bible Schools,* using les-

' son sheets designed and printed by Lfrs. Geneva Bowlin and supervised byMrs. Esther Julian, wore held during July. The older children studiedthe Bible Plan of Salvation; the younger, Bible Heroes.

Evangelist for the last week of our COMPREHENSIVE EVANGELISM campaign, which begins"August 20th will be JACK E. BOAL, minister of the lilARYVALEcongregation, PHOENIX, ARIZONA (Partial Living-Link, llirs* Bowlin). ®tiisSunday, Aug. 19, is D-day, Decision Day, for all Hermosillo congregations, and from the Pastors* enthusiastic reports each congregation should haveseveral Decisions for Christ.

}

This is, we believe, the first effort of Comprehensive Evangelism amongthe Latin American churches (Comprehensive because it "comprehends" ALLthe church members they are to find the prospects, make the cultivationvisits, and bring in the Decisions for Christ). From my point of view, ifthe members and ministers learn to build and work a prospect list the campaign will have been a success I

Trucks are being hired to bring all who wish to attend from our other five congregations to our largest auditorium. Villa de Seris. Thus one special speaker will serve all. Brother Jack E. Boal and his wife, Barbara, are taking a week of their vacation time to come to sweltering Hermosillo(rainy season) to labor for Christ. Please pray for them and for all ofus who labor in this City-Wide Comprehensive Evangelism Campaign.

Yours for a Christian Mexico,

Gerald D. Bowlin.
