The Bowen Community Playground

Bowen Elementary School has one of the largest student bodies of any primary school in

Newton. Due to damage from recent construction projects to accommodate growing

enrollment, our main field had become muddy, icy and dusty. Then the main climbing

structure had to be torn down because it was deteriorating. In Newton, PTOs are responsible

for creating safe and accessible playgrounds and for paying for them. Previous PTOs

installed the swings and climbing structures and they fixed the field’s drainage. They began

the work that we need to finish.

We surveyed parents and teachers and, working with the City of Newton, we have come up

with a plan to transform our playground. We want to create a space that:

1) encourages collaborative and imaginative play

2) provides opportunities for K-5 children to be physically challenged

3) is accessible and inclusive

In partnership with the city, we have created a new grass field for general play and soccer,

we have installed one new full basketball court and a half court and we have installed a

double disc swing. These additions completed in 2014 will alleviate the traffic on the field

and will help the grass thrive.

The next step is installing a new play structure to replace the old tower. Fundraising has

already begun to enable us to reach our goal of $100,000. We need your help to achieve

this goal!

Please take a moment to thank the members of The Lucky 8 Committee. Many of these

volunteers went “above and beyond”, completing much of the auction procurement and

event planning over the summer. Their 100% commitment to this project is why you are able

The playground committee continued their work over the summer and has successfully taken

the project from the design stage through Phase I completion. The presence of new disc

swings, basketball courts and a grassy lower field are a direct outcome of their efforts.

The Bowen PTO extends a sincere thank you to all the committee members’ families who

have endured the many meetings, phone calls and late nights by the members, all of which

Fred Toucher of 98.5, The Sports Hub is the MC this evening! He is a radio celebrity but, first, he

is “just” a Bowen dad. He volunteered for this role as Lucky 8 auctioneer because he cares

about his kids’ primary school experience just as we all do. Please thank him for taking on this

important role this evening.

We all extend a special thank you to Ms. Amber Wenger, art specialist at Bowen Elementary

school. Ms. Wenger put in many hours of her own time to support Bowen students in creating

the “Helping Hearts” project, available to bidders in the live auction this evening. Thank you,

with the silent auctions, we will use bidder numbers for the live auction, so please make sure

the auctioneer hears or sees your bidder number if you have the winning bid.

After the conclusion of the live auction, winning bidder numbers will be posted by the check-

out tables. If you’ve won something, make sure to collect your winnings before you leave.

include only your bidder number (no names, please!) and the amount you are bidding.

Each bidding sheet will show the bid increment for that item. Please bid in the correct

bid increment assigned for that item is $10, please place your bid at $60, $70, $80 or higher,

but always in increments of $10. Bidding on this item at $61 or $65, for example, would be

incorrect.

The silent auction will close at 10:30 pm, so don’t leave your bidding until the last minute!

Shortly after the conclusion of the silent auction, the winning bidder numbers will be posted

Matthews. Each leaf was created by

Bowen students; for each $10, $20, $50 or

$100 sponsorship you will receive a leaf to

add to the tree. All our Giving Tree friends

at Lucky 8 will receive raffle tickets to win

one of three raffle prizes.

The giving tree will be moved to the

Bowen lobby after the Gala.

Just like we’ve worked together to turn

the lower field from brown to green, let’s

fill the tree with green leaves, and

complete the playground.
