Francis is a man of substance and integrity and already curial officials are toning down the trappings of office and using less ostentatious forms of transport in Rome. Francis’s first priority is a concern for the poor, and that is great in itself. But for the moment it is about ‘watching this space’ and about expectations being realised. To the United States. 6 What’s New at Bowens – New Products for the Building Industry

The AFL season starts tonight (I’m writing this article on Friday 22 March). The great thing about one sporting season finishing and months later a new one beginning – is the new Hope that it gives supporters, from all clubs. The dismal results of season 2012 are forgotten and right at this moment (even Melbourne) supporters will be ‘feeling good’ about season 2013! All clubs are fed throughout the off-season with great news about recruiting, about ‘a new direction’, a new coach or whatever else provides a positive stance for the future. On the one hand the supporter is given renewed hope for the next season, and the club some hope that members will re-sign. On a more important note (to me anyway!) Catholics around the world are rejoicing in the appointment of Francis as their new Pope. There will now be a period of ‘Hope’ . . . a hope that Francis might have a new agenda that will bring the church into the 21st Century. This period of ‘Hope’ will provide different aspir-

ations depending on how conservative or liberal a Catholic’s thinking might be. However, as Neil Ormerod (Professor of Theology) has written recently; “Given the vast size of the Catholic church, the diversity of its structures and personnel, what can this one man, already in his mid 70’s, do to make real and significant changes?”But Catholics will enjoy the hope that comes with a new Pope. It will nurture them and provide a nice ‘feeling’ about the future of their troubled Church. When President Obama was elected as the 44th President on 4 November 2008, the country was in a deep recession, losing over 800,000 jobs per month.

His ‘Can do’ slogan gave hope to all Americans. Being the first ‘black’ President he gave hope also to all African Americans. Time and an apparent lack of action has turned hope into some disappointment.Back home it is hard to read the minds of the Australian community as we approach the next Federal election. Staunch Labor supporters will hope for a miracle with the return of Julia Gillard, and Liberal supporters will be a little more confident in their hopes for Tony Abbott. Whatever the result we will all go through a period of ‘hope’ . . . that the Australian economy can be revived by a new, or re-invigorated group of Politicians. The Building Industry in Victoria continues to be tough. There is just not enough building happening to sustain the myriad of trades that rely solely on our built environment. The hope is that ‘things’ will turn around and that we are all back making money, providing jobs and security for all participants in this great industry.‘Hope’ for a better future can be attached to both the trivial and the more important expectations we (and the world) might have. The dictionary has the meaning of ‘hope’ “. . . to entertain the expectation of something denied; to look (mentally) with expectation.”So, each of the examples I have given about (our hopes) for the AFL 2013 season, the future of the Catholic church, the U.S.A. and Australia (politically) and the Victorian Building Industry are about ‘eXPeCTATION’. Hope is about (mental) expectation and therefore is a lonely word left on its own. What your footy club, Pope Francis, President Obama, our Politicians and our Building Industry leaders need to do is ACT! Most expectations we have are for a reasonable outcome – no-one expects to have the ‘perfect world’. We just need our leaders to provide more than hope. Action does speak louder than words and all we have at the start of the journey are words. Our Company, Bowens, needs to improve on the results we have so far. If we are to meet the hopes of owners, directors and staff we require each and every one to take the necessary action. The Company does have a strategy to follow and once that is articulated from John Bowen and Senior Management, and actioned by everyone in the Company, we move from the lonely word ‘hope’ to the realisation that our expectations can be physically achieved. THe BOWeNS WAY (discipline and accountability – uncompromising on the little things . . . ), is a detailed yet common sense and practical plan towards achieving improvement in how we present ourselves and provide all that is necessary to give builders every incentive to deal with our company. This is a great ‘ACTION’ document that hopefully will sustain us through the difficult trading times as well as those buoyant times that will come again. Whatever hopes we have for the future we must realise that our church, country, company or club leaders can only do so much and that it is up to us, as part of a ‘community’, to play our part in helping in the action required to make things (hopes) happen!I finally want to present an excerpt from a speech given by the late Sister Ruth Winship IBVM. Sister Ruth was a nun, a wonderful educator, and a friend of our family. This is not about hope, but about how we need to act and approach LIFe itself. “So I have found that life is not handed to us as a whole. All we get out of it are the pieces – the shaping of it is up to us. And this is a slow, slow process. If you aim to be a leader in this enterprise, you must recognise who you are and what you want to make of yourself and your work. As Mother Gonzaga told her students, “. . . all around you are possibilities of doing good, and of making the world a better place for you having lived in it.” Few, of course, will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of you can work to change a small portion of events and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation. This sounds simple, yet is anything but. You have to learn to be faithful to the ideal you set yourselves and allow this to determine how you will handle the events life meets out to you. Being true to yourself is a piece of advice you cannot ignore.”

Over the past 25 years the timber industry has lost the domestic floor construction market to the concrete industry. As I understand it, 95% of all domestic ground floors are concrete slabs. Until now timber has done little to stop the erosion of this once valuable market.Obviously, there is a perception for many builders that slabs are cheaper than the lightweight timber alternative. Having said that, I was staggered to hear recently that a major home builder did not even know what a timber lightweight floor costs.Surely, if the building site is sloping, the cost of excavation and retaining walls should be taken into consideration. As well, timber construction on these sites opens up design possibilities of garages and downstair (particularly recreation) rooms.Recently I heard on TV a representative from the Insurance Council of Australia questioning why flooded houses built in flood-prone areas of Queensland were built on slabs. A fair conclusion you can draw from that comment is: if these houses were built on raised timber floors they would have been high and dry. Another reason could be the convenience factor. That is, after the set out all the builder has to do is call in the plumber and the concrete contractor and when they have done their thing they are ready for framing. Recently there have been problems, particularly in the western suburbs of Melbourne, with heaving slabs. Apparently these houses were built in the drought, on slabs and are on a clay base. When normal rainfall returned the clay expanded causing major structural damage. This is not to say that timber floors in these areas would not have experienced problems, but surely rectification is not nearly as much a problem to remedy (on timber) than on a slab. Accordingly, certainly light-weight timber floors should be considered if the soil is reactive. Well I am pleased to advise that Bowens has been involved in the construction of a prefabricated Research and development floor panel project. The project has been funded by The Forest and Wood Products Association of Australia (FWPA). This initiative involves the supply and installation of prefabricated floor panels as a viable alternative to concrete slabs, particularly when taking into consideration the factors stated above. Other key players are Wood Products Victoria, Holmesglen Tafe, Mitek Australia and BRANZ, a building research organisation that is very active in Australia and New Zealand. This group has been actively planning a floor panel system that hopefully addresses the convenience factor I spoke of above. That is, we install foundations and prefabricated floor panels on site, ready for plumbing and framing. Recently, we successfully completed a pilot job in regional Victoria. Admittedly, this builder usually builds on timber, but instead of the builder having to install 50 concrete stumps we only used 16, albeit on large foundations. If anyone is interested contact me on 0412 550 740.

New figures show a significant downturn in the number of Victorians involved in construction industry apprenticeships.Construction apprenticeships declined 5.7 per cent last year, from 26,200 in 2011 to 24,700, according to the Victorian Government’s latest training market report. Our industry is a leading provider of quality career paths across the state, but this dramatic drop means that opportunities are being closed to many young Victorians.Activity in many sectors of our industry has been drying up, leading to this apprenticeship decline for many vital trades like carpentry, bricklaying and electrical. The sharp drop in apprentice numbers came on top of significant job losses across the sector, with 13,000 fewer jobs as at November 2012 compared to the previous year.Jobs and apprenticeships are down because investment in homebuilding and other sectors of our industry are down. Unfortunately, unions have decided now is the time to call for large increases in apprentice pay rates that cannot be afforded by the small businesses that hire the majority of apprentices. An apprenticeship is a great way to learn while you earn, but union pay calls would threaten up to 12,000 construction apprenticeships across the country. We want more young people getting involved in our industry, not less. That way our industry will be best placed to build the homes, offices, workplaces and infrastructure Victorians expect and deserve.Failing to train enough people in our sector will lead to rises in future building costs when current skills shortages are further exacerbated. The ACTU and CFMEU have called for a 33 per cent increase to first year apprentice training base wage and an 18.3 per cent rise for second year base wages.Small businesses, who employ up to 70 per cent of all building apprentices, would be forced to wear most of the additional $390 million in industry costs the union pay claim is projected to add.For more information, contact the Master Builders on (03) 9411 4555.

Last month Bowens Bentleigh East held a B-B-Q and meet and greet with V8 Supercar driver Alex Davison. This was to help celebrate Bowens partnership with Natbuild and team JELD-WEN at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. As a sponsor, Bowens featured on the front and rear windscreen on the team’s #18 JELD-WEN FPR Ford. Bowens Bentleigh East was given a showcar for customers to come and experience what the vehicle looked like up close.

We wish Alex and the team all the best for the remainder of the season

and would like to thank the team from JELD-WEN and Natbuild for this great opportunity.

Working predominately in the City of Moreland, darebin and North-Western Melbourne, Ram Builders has many challenges in building in these built-up areas. ‘We need to be organized, as timing and scheduling is such an important part of what we do,’ says Sam. ‘We don’t have the room to store supplies on site, so Bowens keeping to their word to deliver on time is vital.’While Ram Builders use Bowens for timber, framework, lockup and fixings, they also use them for something much more important: advice. ‘Our rep Graeme Hunter from the Taylors Lakes store is more than just a rep, he is like my right hand man,’ says Sam. ‘I have never dealt with a more professional and organized rep.’ Graeme says the same about Sam and his company. ‘Sam has to be organized, and his company and projects benefit from his ability to cross his t’s and dot his i’s.’The culture of the business shines through when Graeme talks about working with Ram Builders. ‘What I have noticed is that Sam’s contractors are more than just chippies and the like, these people take a vested interest in the work they are producing and everyone makes sure they are on task.’Ram Builders staff includes Sam as the sole director, and his partner Joanne who runs the books and accounts. He also has two site managers who manage between twenty to thirty units that are on the books at any one time. The largest project that Ram Builders produced and used Bowen’s supplies was twelve, two story units in Brunswick. Now they are about to start work on sixteen units and shops in east Brunswick.Running an account like Ram Builders, it is Graeme’s ethos to deliver more than just the goods though. He is passionate about giving Sam the best advice possible and Sam is more than appreciative. ‘We needed some Tassie oak floorboards and put the order in but then Graeme suggested we used a wider board that had become a available,’ Sam says. ‘It ended up not only saving us money and time to use this board but it had a better over all finish. It is now the board we always use for flooring.’Graeme says he feels like he is a partner in the business sometimes, as he does with all his customers. ‘I need to know what’s going on so I can help whenever and in whatever way I can,’ Graeme says. ‘With projects in the inner city, schedules are tight and we need to have patience, so Sam and I need to work together to make things happen.’A value-add that Graeme believes brings something extra to his customers is the networks that Bowen’s can access. ‘It’s all about the families,’ Graeme explains. ‘The Bowens family, the Boral family, the James Hardie family and many others. I bring their reps to my clients and then they can get the best for their projects by actually seeing what these companies can offer them.’Graeme explains he is about to head out to see one of Ram Builder’s site managers, then he is off to a meeting with Sam himself to look at the plans and ordering for another five units that Ram’s is about to start building. ‘I don’t just take the orders, I sit and go through all the specs and suggested materials and I discuss the pro’s and con’s of everything that is on the order list. I want to advise what is best and look for the best products and solutions for them.’Sam is incredibly appreciative of this and Graeme’s help doesn’t go unnoticed. ‘His responsiveness shows he is a true professional,’ says Sam of Graeme. ‘He always returns calls, emails, takes the time, and when we have at least five million dollars worth of work on the books at any one time, this sort of attention is priceless.’It is relationships like this that makes Bowens proud to help companies like Ram Builders reach their goals , and make their projects a success.
