How are they effective representations of concerns with metathesis and metafiction?

Both are works portraying a situation wherein the viewer and viewed are breaking the 4th wall.

Flaubert : Narration and Bovarys reactions to books are metafictive.Artwork: is meta-art in that it has a painting within a painting, and cow + cow.

PI: Intro : describe Flaubert and Tansey. Say that they are examples of metathesis and metafiction at work. These lead us to understand their concern, which is that the outcome of such an exchange of elements leads to the destruction of the main charactersPII: METAFICTION real works inside of works in both cases. PIII: same species observing anotherand in that regard, these are METATHETIC

This leads to the metathetical situation where the main characters place themselves within the artwork they are observing.a) Obviously with Mme Bovaryb) With the cow I argue this is true because of the imitation the cow in the real world has as far as facial expressionTRANSITION:Two further things to consider: a) the fact that these characters put themselves within the works of art observing causes the demise of these charactersBovary is sad and so is the cow, because both of their worlds do not parallel the world in which they live.-Bovaryobviously-Painting: because of the onlookers, who are studying and observing the cow in this sterile environment, completely unlike in environment of the cow in the photo.WHY:They express concern because the reality of the book, or artwork, in its totality, cannot be made congruous with the world which the cow and Emma live in. In other words, these people are placing themselves, or trying to, into a world which is just a fabrication of the world, and is a place in which they have no place themselves. For Flaubert I argue that he thinks this is because the written word can only represent reality so much---talk about those two quotes about the failure of language. And perhaps Tansey believes this due to the sharp contrast to the unrealistic, idealistic world in the Ox painting (maybe talk about the fact that the painting is also of an ox while she is a girl cow?)which can never be this cows reality.
