From In Touch

It was very disappointing to be relegated after just two, what proved to be, tough seasons at level 4 but it was quite an achievement to have got to that level in the first place. Each step up to the next level is bigger than the one from below and at level 4 one is meeting teams with serious backing and resources we weren’t to match who are able to sustain a credible campaign.

With the departure of coach Budge Poutney to pastures new, Crispin Cormack ‘stepped up’ to take the lead rôle supported by Paul Dunne. There was also help from Tim Collier and Peter Shaw but results were consistently below par and there was a ‘parting of the ways’ in January, ironically after completing the ‘double’ over Weston-super-Mare, and Craig White and Dan Connolly took over with Will Croker joining later. We also suffered a huge haemorrhage of players, thirty-one in all. Losing players such as Tommy Booth, Fraser Wilford, Rob Fuller, Gavin Hart, Karim Lynch to name just a few was always going to mean a readjustment and it took us a while to come to terms with the new situation. Losing the first three games, albeit to two who were destined to finish first and second but it also included a very disappointing defeat away to Oxford Harlequins first up, means you are immediately on the back foot and the highest position we were to ultimately achieved was 8th. A storming performance in the fourth game saw us beat Barnstaple by seven tries to two in their second heaviest defeat of the season gave us some hope for optimism. We also managed a last gasp 17-16 win away to Weston-super-Mare when we had to say ‘goodbye’ to Rob Elloway on loan from Cornish Pirates. However, just one win in the next five matches saw

us lying 10th after our first defeat against Newton Abbot in the league on a suitably gloomy day in mid November. We managed a creditable win against newly promoted Old Centralians but a slightly disappointing draw against Old Redcliffians saw us lying 9th at the completion of the first half of the campaign. There was no Christmas joy for our visit to high-flying Redingensians who completed the ‘double’ over us with a 43-22 win. However we managed to maintain our unbeaten home record against second-placed Exmouth with a 10-nil win in the New Year. An unlikely result perhaps but typical of what we could achieve against any of the opposition. A lack lustre performance away to Barnstaple was followed by completing the ‘double’ over Weston, a stirring win against Brixham and a win against ‘doomed’ Chard. Very disappointingly we lost at home to Bracknell having lead 10-nil at half-time but failing to score in the second. I won’t mention our visit to Hornets but a five-pointer against Newton Abbot and a ‘what might have been’ loss away to Old Centralians was typical of the season. We might have beaten Old Patesians more convincingly but for conceding a try in injury time at the end of each half and a free-scoring match at Old Redcliffians saw them double their try-scoring bonus point count. We finished by avenging our defeat at Oxford Harlequins on the first day with our biggest win of the season.

We survived. It could have been better but it could have been much worse.Doug Warren, Editor
