T he 2016 market season has drawn to a close and the Clatskanie Farmers Market vendors would like to thank you for your support. Week after week they look forward to the community gathering in Copes Park to exchange stories and good cheer. The Market has become an anticipated weekend event here in Clatskanie for residents and visitors from all around. One vendor overheard a visitor from Astoria tell her companion "This is why I like Clatskanie so much!" That preceded her purchase of vegetables for herself and gifts for several family members. Our little town is enjoying a wonderful resurgence of energy, enthusiasm, and optimism and people from all around are noticing. If you visited the Market this year, you had access to art, hand-crafts, t-shirts, baked good, and tapas, but also some of the freshest fruits and vegetables imaginable. Much of the produce is picked, pulled, dug, or snipped early in the morning on market day. They are still wet from field washing and have generally only traveled a mile or two. Our community's farms and gardens are a bit of a well- kept secret, for now at least. Vendors delight in sharing gardening stories with customers, many of whom have their own gardens. Some of these home gardeners have begun to bring their crops to sell at the Market Community Booth or just to share with the vendors. The pride and delight is hard to miss on market day. Statistics indicate that the knowledge of the Market is beginning to spread as visitors from all over the northwest and other states have begun to drop in. Clearly, they are taking with them news of a great little town as well as their newly purchased Market goods. Next year will be bigger and better as the Market vendors are figuring out new ways to meet the increasing demand. Many of them are doubling the size of their gardens to increase variety and quantity. Some of them are preparing for the late October planting of garlic, a crop that proved to be wildly popular this year. Look for the Third Annual Garlic Festival next August. So, now, as the gardeners clean out the spent plants from their gardens, build their over-wintering compost piles, and plant their cover crops, thoughts turn to the Holiday Bazaar on November 19th. This is the event that showcases the talented, imaginative craftspeople that live here just in time for your Holiday gift-giving. It will be indoors at the American Legion Hall 9:00AM - 4:00PM. Call Marianne with the Clatskanie Farmers Market @ (503)308-3853 for details or if you would like to be a vendor. Again, thanks to all who made this year such a wonderful success. Would you like to become empowered to stretch your food budget and cook healthy meals and nutritious food at home? Are you interested in having fun with other members of your community? Well, sign up for a Clatskanie Farmers Market cooking class and you can do all of that!

The goal of these FREE cooking classes is to: Improve the nutrition knowledge, eating habits, cooking skills, food safety practices, food resource management, and financial planning skills of people in our community so that they can better provide for themselves and their families.

By teaching participants the practical skills and techniques needed to make lasting changes to their eating habits, they will be able to implement specific, sustainable behaviors as they go about their daily lives. We will dispel the myth that “healthy eating is not fun!” Studies show that families that regularly plan meals, write grocery lists, and budget for food make healthy meals from scratch more often than those who don’t. We hope that participants in these free classes will feel comfortable cooking more often and with healthier ingredients.
