Bess portrays her as trustworthy by telling her things such as: “yesterday I wrote a letter to my daughter that may hae lost me her loe foreer! "#$%&, or “your wedding will proide me and the children with 'ust the e(cuse we needed for crossing the country! ")*$&. Bess does not discuss these with anyone else so she must only trust Totsie. +hen wight leaes Totsie, it takes less than a year for Totsie to remarry. Bess is shocked “I still cannot uite beliee that I am writing one letter to the two of you! ")*$&. This leads the reader to beliee that Totsie may not be able to function, or make money, on her own. That shows Totsies dependency on others. The diction Bess uses is ery simple, as if she was writing them ten years younger, to Totsie. /y annotations portray Totsie ery similarly the way Bess portrays her. 0nlike Bess, Totsie neer seems to be as social as Bess. 1ot once is there mention of Totsie being too busy, my annotations indicate Totsie prefers the company of one. 2tarting with Bess, they were ery tight best friends, then wight, then 3rthur. Totsie is that one friend you hae who is shy in public but a heap of energy when youre alone with them.
