Cook’s Corner

Boulder Estates = “BE”

Now that we are preparing meals for Boulder Creek and also Hill Street Place the kitchen has become an even busier place! One thing

we do now that we never had to do before is mark each pan or container with its end destination. For example, a hotdish for Boulder Creek gets marked “BC”. A tray of cookies heading to Hill Street Place

will be marked with “HSP”. We even mark those items that will be served at Boulder Estates with a “BE” just to keep everything

organized.

I especially like the designation that we use for Boulder Estates

because it gives me pause to think each day about what I might “BE”. These are some of the things that have crossed my mind as I stuff

foil covered pans into the oven...

Today I can BE more thankful, more often. I can BE

appreciative for all the blessings that I have. I can BE the

one to express gratitude.

Today I can BE more kind and thoughtful. I can BE an ear

to listen. I can BE a hand to hold. I can BE aware of the needs of others. I can BE a gentle word. I can BE a random act of kindness. I can BE caring. I can BE my brothers

keeper.

Today I can BE a good neighbor. I can BE the one to check

in on a friend. I can BE the phone call to the lonely. I can BE the helping hand. I can BE the host. I can BE a warm

and friendly greeting. I can BE the one that helps carry the

load.

Today I can BE more helpful and useful. I can BE a helpful

smile. I can BE more than just my job. I can BE available

for others.

Today I can BE more understanding and have more

patience. I can BE empathetic. I can BE deliberate. I can

BE conscientious.

Today I can BE more healthy. I can BE better choices. I can

BE wise decisions.

As tenants of Boulder Estates you share the “BE” designation just like I do. What can you BE today? It's fun when you stop to think about

it. I'm curious how you might answer that question so please share

your thoughts.

Happy October!

Dementia Awareness

The following information provided by the Mayo Clinic Patient Education booklet,

‘Understanding Dementia’, lists the following as the common symptoms of all dementias:

Memory loss: ‘While it is normal to forget names and appointments from time to time,

individuals who have dementia usually forget things frequently and consistently and often

have difficulty recalling recent events.’

Difficulty performing tasks: ‘Unfamiliar or uncommon activities are the most taxing, but as

the disease progresses; even familiar tasks that the person has done many times may become

difficult.

Problems with language: ‘From time to time everyone has trouble finding the right word or

recalling a person’s name. However, people who have dementia often forget simple words

or use words incorrectly, making their speech and writing sometimes difficult to

understand.’

Disorientation to time and place: ‘Individuals may become lost in familiar places, such as

the street where they live. They may forget where they are or how to get home. They also

frequently forget the day of the week, the month or the time of year.’

Difficulty with problem solving and abstract thinking: ‘balancing a checkbook can be

difficult for some, and completing tax forms is challenging for most individuals. A person

with dementia would frequently have difficulty completing these tasks and, as the severity of

dementia increase, he or she may forget what the numbers represent or what needs to be

done with them.’

Misplacing things or putting things in unusual places.

Changes in mood, behavior or personality: ‘People who have dementia may become

unusually emotional and experience rapid mood swings for no clear reason. They may

show less emotion than usual, or they may say or do inappropriate things. Individuals who

have dementia also may seem different in ways that are difficult to pinpoint. For example,

they may become suspicious, irritable, depressed, fearful, anxious or short-tempered.

Loss of initiative: ‘Individuals who have dementia may become passive and withdrawn, for

example, they may sit in front of the television for hours; sleep more than usual; or lose

interest in hobbies and other activities they once enjoyed.’

Why Do We Forget Names? By Dr. Rob Winningham, Psychology and Gerontology Professor at

Western Oregon University

October 2014

One of the most common complaints about memory is “I can’t remember their name.” In this short article, I will discuss this phenomenon and give some suggestions, and hopefully peace of mind.

There are a couple of primary reasons we sometimes are unable to remember someone’s name. First, we often don’t encode or make a new memory of someone’s name in the first place. We can’t later retrieve a name if we never stored it. The failure to make a new memory of someone’s name when you first meet them is probably the most common challenge.

The second main reason we might not remember someone’s name is not because we haven’t learned it but rather we can’t retrieve or find their name in our memory banks. This situation is known as the Tip of the Tongue state. With Tip of the Tongue experiences, we know the name, we know we know the name, we might even know what sound or letter the name starts with, but alas, it won’t come to us. I am happy to report that Tip of the Tongue states do not appear to be a sign of a more significant problem, although they do often occur with increasing frequency during middle and late adulthood. However, middle age and older adults are more likely to solve a Tip of the Tongue state than a younger adult. One strategy for dealing with these situations is to simply stop thinking about the name for a while. Or, think about people and things related to the name, such as other people associated with the person, places you have been with the person, and so on.

If you want to remember someone’s name, you might want to do one or more of the following:

1. When learning someone’s name, imagine someone else you know with the same name. Quickly imagine whether the two people you know with the same name could be friends or if they have some sort of commonality.

2. Ask the person to spell their name. This will give you more time to rehearse and possibly create a visual image of the name.

3. After learning someone’s name, you can try repeating it back to them, hold it in your mind for a moment, and rehearse it by using it in a normal conversation. If you forget the name in the first few minutes, go ahead and ask them to remind you again. Be sure to address them by their name when you depart.

4. Try writing the name down as soon as possible and rehearse it over the next day or two.

5. Finally, don’t worry if you are unable to remember a name. It is normal and something that most of us find challenging at times.

Stop by to visit a friend at Boulder Creek! Preferred visiting hours are 1:00-4:00 pm.

Halloween Fun Facts

The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from

turnips.

According to Irish legend,

Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the

devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both

heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the

Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths.

Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of

Halloween.

Both Salem, Massachusetts,

and Anoka, Minnesota, are the self-proclaimed Halloween capitals of the world.

Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dol-

lars annually in the United States.

Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!

Applications must be returned by October 27

to ensure that your ballot is processed by

Election day.

3. Boulder Estates will provide a MAT bus to

our polling place on Election Day if you

prefer to vote in person. The times will be

announced closer to the date.

4. Of course, you are welcome to go vote on
