MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR
The Spirit of Boulder2012-2013 SEASON
Season Presenting Sponsors: Gordon & Grace Gamm
“…Thank you for doing such a terrific job selling my home. You advertised it well, negotiated a top selling price and you followed through like a true professional. To say the least I was extremely impressed with the results you produced! …an outstanding Realtor and a great guy.” Jimmy Calano “…We still have not forgotten the conscientious and professional service you gave us as the listing broker. After having the house listed for over six months with one of your competitors and never hearing from him, it was a pleasant surprise to get periodic updates from you and to ultimately hear that you had a Buyer.” Frank Pool “…You not only sold my property but, you also got the highest price paid on any comparable unit during the last two years. Your professional assistance and continuous monitoring of the situation was of the highest quality I have seen since my employment with the Lomas and Nettleton Banking Company.” Eric A. Conger “…Gary seems to have a remarkable ability to work with people. He was able to buoy up my spirits at a time that I was feeling rather discouraged about selling my place. I appreciated his relaxed manner and his enthusiasm, as well as the patience with which he explained the listing contract and finally the sales contract.” Maris Whitaker
“…Gary Hillman achieved the impossible! I had a home to sell that needed work. Gary gave me excellent advice about the local situation and about how to fix it up –and then sold it within 40 hours of it being listed”. Aline Chipman Brandauer “…Gary’s performance thru the process of listing, showing and selling the property was very professional. He was candid in his assessment of market conditions, prompt and accurate in providing information we requested & attentive to our needs”. David McInerney “…We believe that your services were above and beyond the call of duty. You also communicated with us on a regular basis, as you said you would, about the status of your marketing efforts, and with suggestions to enhance the saleability of the property. We certainly would offer you our highest recommendation should the need arise.” Roger Miller, “…It was only through your persistence & hard work that resulted in the sale of my property at the best possible market value. Having worked with a number of real estate agents in various parts of the country where I have lived or owned property, you have been one of the most effective and results oriented professionals that I have come across in your line of work.” Demetrios Lignos
• What others say... "...Gary Hillman is the most professional & well-informed Realtor that I have worked with over the years. His professionalism and integrity are unsurpassed. I have owned RE in New York, Maui, Littleton, Westminster & Boulder. In all of these circumstances, Gary Hillman stands head and shoulders above all other Realtors with whom I have worked."
• What others say..."As a lawyer practicing in Boulder for 10 years, I have worked with dozens of Realtors in many different types of real estate transactions. You are without a doubt the finest Realtor in Boulder"

Dear Friends,
The Boulder Phil is in the connections business, andnothing is more important to us than the bondbetween our orchestra and our unique hometown. While reflecting The Spirit of Boulder and blendingtime-tested masterpieces with new discoveries, ouraudience has grown by 40% in the past three seasons.Building on this momentum, our 55th season offers ahost of delights both familiar and fresh.
Along with well-loved music from Tchaikovsky, Brahmsand Sibelius, we’ll enjoy a sizzling new work from CUcomposer Jeff Nytch, hear New Orleans hot jazz fromtrumpet phenom Byron Stripling, explore arctic inspira-tion with Finish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara and examine life’s journey through RichardDanielpour’s setting of poetry by Maya Angelou.
We have much-anticipated returns, as well. On opening night we’ll welcome back a home-town favorite, the brilliant pianist Christopher Taylor. We’ll once again kick off the holiday sea-son with the Boulder Ballet in our annual Nutcracker performances. January marks the returnof one of the world’s preeminent violinists—Sarah Chang—as she performs with the orchestrawith whom she made her professional debut. The Boulder Chorale joins us for two perform-ances of Brahms’ moving Requiem in February. And in March, we’ll enjoy the high-energythrills of Cirque de la Symphonie, sure to be a sell-out again this year. The Phil is honored to have been invited to perform at the prestigious Vilar Performing ArtsCenter in Beaver Creek for the second year in a row this February. Our annual DiscoveryConcerts, performed at Macky and in Adams and Arapahoe Counties, will introduce elemen-tary students to the magic of live symphonic music, and we’ll once again partner with theParlando School for the Arts to present our annual Young Artists Concerto Competition. At the Boulder Phil, we believe in the importance of connections: between us and our com-munity, yes, but especially the connection between you and this miraculous art form calledmusic. Each concert is designed to help spark and strengthen that connection with experi-ences that touch both the heart and the mind. We thank you for being part of the excitementof The Spirit of Boulder this season and look forward to our journey of discovery together.Enjoy!

Heckman, who most recently served as Board Treasurer.
“Under the leadership of Michael Butterman, our

combination is confirmed by the engagement and
continued growth of our audience and patrons.”

About the Boulder Phil
Under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is
celebrating its 55th year of providing outstanding orchestral music highlighting the creative talents of our own
unique community. The Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra, presenting performances
nine months out of the year and employing a core of 72 of our region’s most highly trained musicians.
Voted “Best Classical Music” two years running by the readers of Boulder Weekly, the Boulder Phil’s main
performance venue is Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus, a historic concert hall which recently
celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Boulder Phil’s Masterworks series—broadcast across the state on
Colorado Public Radio—features a dynamic mix of masterpieces and promising new works, highlighting both
accomplished and emerging guest artists with a special emphasis on Boulder’s own creative community.
The orchestra’s broad reach in the community includes special events such as the annual co-production of
The Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet and “Café Phil” open rehearsal nights at the Dairy Center for the
Arts. The Boulder Phil also works to inspire the next generation of music-lovers through its Discovery
Concerts reaching 4th and 5th grade students across multiple counties.
Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil became a fully professional ensemble under the leadership of
Theodore Kuchar, who began his tenure as music director in 1996. Michael Butterman was named music
director in 2006, bringing a strong emphasis on education and outreach, as well as a creative approach to
programming that includes a focus on collaborations with other local artists. Under his direction, the Boulder
Philharmonic Orchestra reflects and fosters all that makes Boulder special—its creativity, spirit, beauty and
quest for knowledge. By connecting people to orchestral music, the Boulder Phil strives to be an essential
part of our community's cultural fabric.
Michael Butterman, Conductor
Making his mark as a model for today’s conductors, Michael Butterman
is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative
programming, and audience and community engagement. He is in his
seventh season as Music Director for both the Boulder Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 13th
season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the first position of its kind in the
United States. Beginning in 2009, he assumed the additional post of
Resident Conductor for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. This past season was highlighted by his
debut with the renowned Cleveland Orchestra.
Mr. Butterman returns to the Cleveland Orchestra in the 2012-2013 season for two concerts and
makes his debut with the California Symphony. Guest conducting engagements also include
appearances with the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Oregon Symphony,
Kansas City Symphony, Hartford Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, New Mexico
Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, El Paso Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony,
Mobile Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Pensacola Opera and Asheville Lyric
Opera. Summer appearances include Tanglewood, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado and
the Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia.
Mr. Butterman gained international attention as a diploma laureate in the Prokofiev International
Conducting Competition and as a finalist in the prestigious Besançon International Conducting
Competition. As the 1999 recipient of the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship, he studied at Tanglewood with
Robert Spano, Jorma Panula, and Maestro Ozawa, and shared the podium with Ozawa to lead the
season’s opening concert. In 1997, Mr. Butterman was sponsored by UNESCO to lead the National
Philharmonic Orchestra of Moldova in a concert of music by great American masters.
From 2000 to 2007, Mr. Butterman held the post of Associate Conductor for the Jacksonville
Symphony in Florida. For six seasons, he also served as Music Director of Opera Southwest in
Albuquerque, NM. Prior to joining the Jacksonville Symphony, Mr. Butterman was Director of Orchestral
Studies at the LSU School of Music for five years, and was Principal Conductor of the LSU Opera
Theater. Previously, he held the post of Associate Conductor of the Columbus Pro Musica Orchestra,
and served as Music Director of the Chamber Opera, Studio Opera, and Opera Workshop at the Indiana
University School of Music. For two seasons, he was also the Associate Music Director of the Ohio Light
Opera, conducting over 35 performances each summer.
At Indiana University, Mr. Butterman conducted a highly acclaimed production of Leonard
Bernstein’s little-known 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in a series of performances at the Kennedy Center
in Washington, DC, receiving unanimous praise from such publications as The New York Times,
Washington Post, Variety, and USA Today. He was subsequently invited to New York at the request of
the Bernstein estate to prepare a performance of a revised version of the work.
Michael Butterman’s work has been featured in five nationwide broadcasts on public radio's
Performance Today, and can be heard on two CDs recorded for the Newport Classics label and on a
new disc in which he conducts the Rochester Philharmonic and collaborates with actor John Lithgow.

We introduce fourth and fifth graders throughout the Boulder Valley School District to symphonic music
through a performance designed to support their core curriculum. Teachers are provided a curriculum guide
to help prepare their students for the experience, complemented by a visit from Michael Butterman. Our goal
is to inspire students to begin instrumental study through the public schools, which studies show lead to
improved academic performance in other areas as well.

Through his classroom visits, Maestro Butterman becomes a resource for area music educators. With
elementary schools, he often presents a session about conducting that explores the relationship between
teamwork and leadership, culminating in students leading their classmates in conducting simple musical
passages. With middle schools and high schools, he leads rehearsals of the school ensembles, reinforcing the
work of their directors while offering his own interpretive insights.

Thanks to the support of Colorado Business Bank, the Boulder Phil makes access to our performances
easy through $5 tickets for students at all Masterworks concerts. Since 1959, we also have provided a
forum for exceptionally talented young musicians through our Young Artists Concerto Competition. The
addition of a "Junior Division" represents a new partnership between the Boulder Phil and the Parlando
School for the Arts.
