March 9 th 2021 Ms. Taylor - 810-632-2200 (EXT 158) - [email protected] Highlights from the Bottlenose Classroom This week we introduced our fairy tale and fable unit! All literacy learning in the upcoming weeks will lead to our Spring Culminating event. Students will take what they know about characters, settings, themes, and connections to retell a famous fairy tale/fable. They will also create hands- on projects to go along with their retelling. This will happen mid-April. The students had so much fun learning about our first four fairy tales and this week we will introduce even more. We will read about The Ugly Duckling, Little Red Hen, Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. At the end of the week we will partake in a Book Bracket to see which is the most popular story in our classroom! In math, the students have been doing phenomenally with their individual math works and have done a great job reviewing their subtraction skills. Students will work on building and reading numbers in the hundredths and thousandths place this week. In writing, students will build upon their knowledge of persuasive writing to identify an issue in the world and write to an audience to persuade others to take action and fix the problem. Students have been doing a great job with their sight words and we will not be adding any new ones until after our Spring Culminating event. Continue practicing all of those amazing high frequency words at home as we practice at school! I am excited to share in your child’s educational journey. They are doing a great job and so many of our students have made incredible reading growth already this month! I look forward to another great week in Bottlenose! On Thursday, March 25 th , we will end March is Reading month by celebrating the diversity of reading with a Book Exchange. Each student will bring in a book, new or old, that is special to them. We encourage the students to pick the book out themselves. They are picking a book that they think another reader would love to explore and that they are okay parting ways with (if it is one they already own). On March 25 th , we will sit around the circle with all books in the middle of the carpet. We will take turns picking a book until everyone in the circle is the proud owner of a special story. Now, each student has a brand new story to take home and enjoy! What is really exciting about this is our virtual learners will be participating too! This shows the connectivity of storytelling. Please return all books by March 18 th . We ask that they be wrapped so the titles remain a surprise. If you do not want to wrap it – that is totally fine! Just send it in and I can wrap it here at school! If you have any questions about this book exchange, please do not hesitate to email me!

March is (also) Music Month! In addition to it being “March is Reading Month”, March is also “Music in our Schools Month!” Mr. V is offering opportunities during Music class for students to share a musical talent or interest. It could be singing a song, playing something on the piano in class, bringing in an instrument from home, doing a dance, sharing their favorite song, etc. This is a voluntary and informal (but prepared) in-class participation opportunity. If your student is hoping to bring something from home, especially an instrument, please chat with them and their classroom teachers to confirm their “performance” date so that they will be prepared and have what they need for Music class on the correct day. Mr. V will have a piano and microphone available for use, as well as the ability to play a song to sing/perform to. If sending a video from home is easier, that can be emailed to classroom teachers or to Mr. V directly. Performances will be limited to two minutes and sign up will take place in their regular classrooms. Our virtual learners also have an opportunity to share via a Seesaw or Google Classroom assignment that will be posted in March. We hope to see lots of kids taking part in making musical connections!

Picture Time!

The students worked hard on their Little

Red Riding Hood story

summary and character vs. setting sort!

Each day in March, Little Red Riding Hood has dropped off a new activity or coloring page for our class to do to continue learning all about fairy tales

and fables!

Life is better with friends!

We added a new game to our classroom this week – jumbo checkers!

Look at all of those crazy socks!

We love being a Bottlenose family! So, we decided to push the tables together and play some games and talk with our friends for a little on Wednesday!

Thank you Ms. Danielle for being an amazing first mystery Zoom reader! The kids had such a great time and accepted your kindness challenge by making cards for another room in the school!

The sun has been showing up at recess more and more!!
